Northwestern Advances In NIT With 70-61 Win Over Wisconsin-Milwaukee

Postseason success is a rarity for Northwestern Basketball. Their long drought without an NCAA Tournament appearances is well noted, but in five previous NIT appearances the Wildcats only have a pair of victories. Their sixth trip this season added another victory Wednesday night with a 70-61 win over Wisconsin-Milwaukee. It is Northwestern’s third straight trip to the NIT, but its first victory in that time.

So, after two straight years of first-round NIT losses, Northwestern has a win in a basketball postseason game for the first time in 17 years. Huh. Here we come, second round of the NIT.

NU was in control after a spurt in the first half and held on by about ten for most of the game. John and Juice combined for 45 points on 9-21 shooting from downtown, and NU’s 1-3-1 forced 16 turnovers. Pretty all-around good performance for NU, plus, Loretta is happy Wisconsin-Milwaukee covered the 9.5 point spread.

Next up are the Eagles of Boston College, who mercilessly handled McNeese State their last time out, although the date for that matchup is unknown. We can hope for Long Beach State to pull out a W tonight, but most likely, this was the last game for Juice Thompson in the friendly confines of Welsh-Ryan.
