The Northern Illinois Huskies finished the game with over 700 yards of total offense, and they needed every single one to beat the Ball State Cardinals 41-38 on Tuesday night. The team was down 38-35 with less than three minutes remaining and needed a second goal with just eight seconds left in regulation to win the game.
In a high-scoring match-up typical of Northern Illinois, the Huskies managed to trail by as much as 17 points in the second half before mounting multiple comebacks. The Huskies came back from a 31-14 deficit to lead 35-31 early in the fourth quarter, and had to kick two field goals in the final three minutes to overcome Ball State's 38-35 lead after giving up a touchdown.
Coming into the game as the ninth-highest scoring offense in the nation, that squad did its part to win tonight's game while coming up with 710 yards of total offense. Senior quarterback Chandler Harnish had a huge day for the team, completing 25 of 35 passes for 331 yards and two touchdowns while adding 181 yards and another touchdown on the ground. The team got another 122 yards rushing from Jasmin Hopkins.
It was a strong performance from a good offense, but the team really needed it given that they weren't the only ones moving across the field with ease. Ball State totaled 397 yards of total offense and scored a defensive touchdown, and had the lead for most of the game. Starting at its own 20 with 1:46 remaining in the game, Harnish led the Huskies offense down to the Ball State 17-yard line with 8 second left, where Mathew Sims knocked through a 34-yard field goal.
