Al Afalava, Garrett Wolfe Among Bears Veterans Seeking Roster Spot

The Sun-Times runs down a list of players on the bubble for this year’s roster, including Al Afalava and Garrett Wolfe, who played quite a bit last year:

Al Afalava: At this juncture, there’s not much the 2009 sixth-rounder may be able to do to earn a roster spot. It’s a precipitous fall for a player who started 13 games as a rookie.

But Afalava hasn’t distinguished himself, and he seems to have fallen behind Josh Bullocks as the fifth safety. Although Craig Steltz has been sidelined with a high ankle sprain, the Bears like his special-teams skills and his ability to play both safety spots.

Garrett Wolfe: The former third-round pick has been passed on the depth chart by Kahlil Bell. But Wolfe’s special-teams prowess may actually keep him gainfully employed by the Bears.

But he’ll need to do something tonight to bolster his standing.

The Bears will need to cut down to the 53-man opening day roster by Saturday afternoon.
