Sox And Cubs Alumni To Head USA Pan Am Games Qualifying Team

Ernie Young, a Chicago native (Mendel Catholic High School) and current manager of the White Sox’ Class A affiliate at Kannapolis in the Carolina League, has been named manager of the USA Pan Am Games qualifying team that will play in Puerto Rico in October, hoping to qualify for the 2011 Pan Am Games, which will be held in Guadalajara, Mexico next year:

Young, an outfielder on the 2000 U.S. Olympic gold medal team and the hitting coach for the gold medal 2009 World Cup team, will manage a team comprised of players currently not on major league 40-man rosters that will compete in a qualifying event for the 2011 Pan American Games and the 2011 IBAF Baseball World Cup.

Ernie Young is a former major league outfielder (Athletics, Royals, Tigers, Diamondbacks, Indians), and will have as one of his coaches Leon Durham. The former Cubs first baseman is now the hitting coach for the Tigers’ Triple-A affiliate in Toledo.
