The Cubs, They Are A-Changin' -- Roster And Coaching Moves

The Mike Quade “era” — which may not last longer than 37 games — as manager begins tonight.

And the Cubs have made several moves, both with players and coaches, in advance of tonight’s game. Geovany Soto was activated from the disabled list and Micah Hoffpauir recalled from Iowa. To make room on the roster, Welington Castillo and Sam Fuld were returned to Triple-A.

Also, with the promotion of Quade, that created a vacancy on the coaching staff. Ivan DeJesus, who has been coaching first base, will become third base coach. And Bob Dernier, part of the 1984 NL East champion Cubs’ “Daily Double” along with Ryne Sandberg, will become the team’s first base coach. Dernier has been in the organization as minor league baserunning coordinator and you’d have to think he’d be in the running for a coaching position next year, too.
