The Cubs sent Derrek Lee to the Atlanta Braves this afternoon for three pitching prospects: Robinson Lopez, Tyrelle Harris and Jeffrey Lorick. Lee waived his 10-and-5 no-trade rights to join the NL East-leading Braves.
Harris has posted a 2.90 ERA at three levels of the Braves organization this year, mostly in relief; Lopez, who is only 19 years old, was a starter at Rome in the Sally League this season, and Lorick was recently promoted from Rome to the Braves’ Carolina League team in Myrtle Beach after posting a 2.32 ERA in Low-A ball.
The Cubs also sent $1.7 million to Atlanta, which is half of Lee’s remaining salary, so they save $1.7 million this year.
Micah Hoffpauir will be recalled to take Lee’s spot on the roster.
