It’s official. The Chicago Bears have confirmed the signing of backup quarterback Matt Gutierrez today. The former Kansas City Chiefs and New England Patriots depth-chart QB completes a however briefly desperate search for someone to support starter Jay Cutler after Caleb Hanie was injured. Hanie isn’t, however, completely out of the picture — he’s expected back in a few weeks.
The team also signed undrafted free agent rookie safety Aaron Webster to a two-year deal. Webster played for the Cincinnati Bearcats last year and was waived by the Houston Texans in June. He provides depth in light of Craig Steltz’s ankle sprain.
To comply with the 80-man roster limit, the Bears have waived guard Vince Vance. Left back Matt Mayberry has also been waived because of injury.
