Andre Dawson To Be Honored By Cubs August 30

David Kaplan and Fred Mitchell’s column in today’s Tribune says the Cubs will have honors for Andre:

We hear the Cubs are making plans to honor recent Hall of Fame inductee Andre Dawson on Aug. 30, perhaps by retiring Dawson’s No. 8 uniform.

The Cubs host the Pirates that Monday night at Wrigley Field. The Nationals (previously the Expos with whom Dawson broke in) and the Marlins also are likely to retire his number.

Though Dawson spent only six seasons in a Cubs uniform, his 1987 MVP award and his class and dignity on the field earn him this honor. Nine players and two coaches have worn #8 since Andre left the Cubs after the 1992 season. 3B coach Mike Quade, the current wearer of #8, would surely gladly change numbers to honor The Hawk.
