Cubs-Dodgers Deal Centers On Pitcher, Possibly DeWitt

WGN’s George Ofman has been tweeting diligently throughout on the morning on the apparently smoldering talks between Cubs GM Jim Hendry and Dodgers GM Ned Colletti. As of this writing, the deal in question involves Cubs left-handed pitcher Ted Lilly and shortstop/second baseman Ryan Theriot going to Los Angeles in return for a Dodger pitcher (presumably a prospect) and possibly even current Dodgers second baseman Blake DeWitt. But DeWitt, a former No. 1 draft pick who’s actually outperforming Theriot at the plate so far this season (in fewer plate appearances, however), is no certainty. In a reply to me, Ofman tweeted:

If theriot goes there I imagine [DeWitt] comes here. Key to a deal with L.A. is pitcher coming back to Cubs

Meanwhile, don’t count out the Yankees making a late run at Ted Lilly. Bruce Levine blogs that the Bronx Bombers could make a sudden, pre-emptive strike.
