Lovie Smith Speaks... And Makes No News

New, 2 comments

In Bears coach Lovie Smith’s first news conference of 2010 training camp, his comments rated very high on the cliche meter:

“We need to win for the Chicago Bears,” Smith said. "(The players) want to play their best. That’s what we are going to talk about, players playing their best every time they get an opportunity to. Everything else takes care of itself. It’s no more than that. You guys are going to talk a lot about that stuff.

“For us, it’s been a long time since we’ve been in the playoffs. We want to play our best football, and I have been in this game a little bit. I think I know what a good football team looks like. This is a good football team. Every week, everything will take care of itself.”

There isn’t a thing in those two paragraphs that couldn’t have been said by any coach about any team. But wait, there’s more:

“If you look at the things that are in place right now, I talked about the coaching staff. We feel good about the coaching staff,” Smith said. “We’ve had success before. We know what a Super Bowl football team looks like. So this part of the season, all teams can do is talk about the potential they have for their football team and see if there are any glaring weaknesses. We just don’t see that. We see guys in positions with an opportunity to really excel and take a big step forward. Before now it was about getting personnel getting a lot of outside things set. Now, it’s down to just the coaches and the players with football and we feel good about that.”

Let me emphasize one line in that one:

Coaches, players and football. Who knew?
