The Sun-Times’ Rick Telander writes today about the Bulls’ hiring of Tom Thibodeau as their new coach; his essential point appears to be that the Bulls are a big-market team and should hire a “big name”:

Chicago is a place that should go after the biggest names, the biggest salaries, the biggest winners there are — in coaching, playing and managing.

Well, great. Big names? How’s that working out for the Cubs with Dusty Baker and Lou Piniella? How’d it work for the Blackhawks with Denis Savard? The Hawks didn’t become the Stanley Cup finalist we know now until they hired Joel Quenneville, a winner, to be sure, but not a big name — until now.

Telander, after meandering through a mushy column, finally hits on the key:

… if Thibodeau’s connection with the new-to-the-sports-biz, glitter-and-Hollywood agency CAA, which is also where LeBron James’ agent Leon Rose works, is the biggest part of this hire, then terrific.
