It's the bottom of the ninth inning at Citizen's Bank Park in Philidelphia and the Cubs are clinging to a slim 4-1 lead. The middle infield team of Ryan Theriot and Starlin Castro combined for the Cubs first run in the top of the third inning. Theriot singled, stole second, and then scored on Castro's follow-up single.
The Cubs added on in the seventh when John Baker followed Alfonso Soriano's two out double to right with a single to third.
The Phillies had chances in the game but couldn't seem to solve Tom Gorzelanny who pitched 6.2 innings until he was removed after getting hit in his pitching hand by a land drive off the bat of Carlos Ruiz. John Grabow entered in relief and promptly struck out pinch hitter Ben Francisco to end the inning.
Grabow got into his own trouble in the eighth, however, after two straight hits by Placido Polanco and Chase Utley turned into the Phillies first run of the night. The run was driven in by Ryan Howard, who was called out on a close play at first. Howard was visibly upset by the call.
With the tying run in scoring position, Carlos Zambrano once again appeared in relief (so much for that stretching him out plan) and induced a ground ball from Jayson Werth to end the inning.
The Cubs managed to tack on two insurance runs in the top of the ninth off of a walk to Derrek Lee and a hit by pitch to Marlon Byrd. After an Alfonso Soriano walk and two strikeouts by Aramis Ramirez and Tyler Colvin, Xavier Nady singled up the middle past a diving Chase Utley to tack on a pair.
