Notre Dame vs. Stanford: Everett Golson impresses veteran offensive line

Matt Cashore-US PRESSWIRE - Presswire

Notre Dame Fighting Irish quarterback Everett Golson has made strides early in 2012, and the veteran offensive line has taken notice.

Notre Dame Fighting Irish quarterback Everett Golson has helped his team start the season with a perfect 5-0 record, and his offensive lineman have taken notice of the strides he has made over the first few weeks. If Golson can consistently impact the game with his mobility like he did during the team's 41-3 win over the Miami Hurricanes on Oct. 6, when he supplemented a 17-of-22, 186-yard passing performance with 51 rushing yards on eight carries, the offense could become even more dangerous.

On the season, Golson has completed 60.4 percent of his passes (67-111) for 827 yards, three touchdowns and three interceptions, and if the impressions from his veteran leaders along the offensive line are any indication, those numbers could improve going forward. Here is what center Braxston Cave had to say about Golson's progression (via CSN-Chicago):

"Our combination blocks, calling out linebackers when we got an overloaded box so he can check out of things -- there's tons of different things, I could go on and on, but he's picking up really fast. And it's not even us as much now having to tell him anything, and he's making the calls on his own."

Golson credited his line and the ND coaches for the progress he's made so far in 2012, adding: "I think throughout the course of the game, I never really felt they were throwing something at me that we didn't see or prepare for."

The Fighting Irish (5-0) host Stanford (4-1) on Saturday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. CT on NBC.
