Northwestern remains unbeaten with 44-29 win

The Northwestern Wildcats posted a school-record 704 yards of offense in a 44-29 rout over the Indiana Hoosiers on the opening weekend of Big Ten play at Ryan Field in Evanston. The Wildcats moved to 5-0 on the season, while the Hoosiers fell to 2-2. In even more consequential developments, Indiana is now the losingest FBS program of all time.

After a slow start for both teams, Wildcats quarterback Kain Colter opened the scoring with his first of four rushing touchdowns on the day with 5:52 remaining in the first quarter. The floodgates then opened for Northwestern, who held a 27-0 lead at one point in the third quarter.

The Hoosiers finally got things going in the third quarter, scoring three touchdowns in the frame, with one coming via 96-yard kickoff return by Tevin Coleman. Indiana would close to within 37-29 early in the fourth, but Colter's fourth score of the day with 5:07 left would prove to be the nail in the coffin.

Box Score Hero: Colter did very little passing on the day, as most of those duties were held by Trevor Siemian. But Colter ran for 161 yards and the four scores while also catching nine passes for 131 yards.

Rankings Ramifications: Neither of these teams entered the weekend ranked, but Northwestern had received the most votes for a team outside the top 25. Depending on other outcomes, the Wildcats could find themselves in the rankings next week.

But Did They Cover?: Northwestern was a 12.5-point favorite according to several betting services, and with the 15-point victory, they covered. The over/under was set around 60 by most services, and the game easily went over.

Next Week's Schedule: Northwestern goes on to the road to take on Penn State. Indiana will host Michigan State.

The Wildcats would answer right back with a 75-yard touchdown drive, capped off by a 1-yard run by running back Venric Mark. Wildcats crushing Hoosiers 20-0 at half

The Northwestern Wildcats are well on their way to a 5-0 start, as they have opened up a 20-0 halftime lead over the Indiana Hoosiers.

After a somewhat sluggish start, Northwestern's offense came to life, bolstered by the quarterback duo of Trevor Siemian and Kain Colter. Siemian has done plenty of damage through the air, completing 12-20 passes for 157 yards. Colter has actually been the recipient of six of those passes, compiling 90 yards receiving. He has also been prolific on the ground, rushing for 54 yards and two eight-yard scores.

For the half, the Wildcats racked up 316 total yards of offense, more than doubling the Hoosiers' output of 145. The powerful offensive attack has been almost perfectly balanced, with 157 yards passing and 159 yards rushing.

Besides Colter's two rushing touchdowns, Northwestern kicker Jeff Budzien has chipped in with two field goals. Budzien has not missed a kick all season.

Wildcats lead 7-0 after first quarter

The undefeated Northwestern Wildcats lead the Indiana Hoosiers 7-0 after one quarter at Ryan Field in Evanston.

The Wildcats opened the scoring on a eight-yard scramble by quarterback Kain Colter with 5:52 remaining in the first quarter. The rush capped off a six-play, 80-yard drive that spanned just over two minutes.

Northwestern coach Pat Fitzgerald mixed things up early on, giving the starting quarterback nod to backup Trevor Siemian. Siemian went 4-7 for 37 yards in the opening quarter.

Meanwhile, Colter began the game at wide receiver, hauling in one pass for 16 yards. He also has taken snaps at quarterback, rushing three times for 39 yards and a score while throwing just one pass. That lone pass was picked off, which was actually the first interception of the season thrown by Wildcats quarterbacks.

Indiana threatened to score early, but Hoosiers kicker Mitch Ewald missed a 21-yard field goal attempt wide right.
