The New York Knicks signed former Northwestern Wildcats' star forward John Shurnato a one-year contract on Monday. Shurna led the Big Ten in scoring last season while with Northwestern at 20.0 points per game, shooting 44 percent from behind the arc. Behind Shurna the Wildcats finished 19-14 and lost to Washington in the second round of the NIT.
Shurna played with the Atlanta Hawks during summer league, where he struggled, but the Knicks decided to give him a partially guaranteed minimum deal that would become fully guaranteed if Shurna were to still be on the roster on Jan. 10. The Knicks now have 16 players under contract heading into training camp.
No Northwestern players have been on an NBA roster since 2003, when Evan Eschmeyer played for the Dallas Mavericks. Media day for Knicks training camp will be on Oct. 1.
