Michigan St. Vs. Northwestern Score Update: Spartans Cruise To 31-17 Victory

Although it entered the matchup with No. 14 Michigan St. on a four-game winning streak, Northwestern knew it would have to play one of its best games of the season to knock off the Spartans. Unfortunately, the Wildcats were unable to elevate their game to another level, as they fell 31-17 in the regular-season finale for both teams.

The Spartans were led by QB Kirk Cousins, who broke Jeff Smoker's Michigan St. TD record in the win. Cousins completed 14/20 for 214 yards and two TD's. Both TD throws went to B.J. Cunningham, who had six catches for 120 yards in the victory. Sophomore RB Le'Veon Bell controlled the tempo on the ground, rushing for 86 yards on 16 carries.

In the loss, Northwestern received a terrific performance from QB Dan Persa. The senior QB completed 23/32 for 245 yards and 2 TD's. Kain Colter had six catches for 44 yards, while Jeremy Ebert added seven catches for 39 yards and a TD. With the Wildcats trailing for much of the game, the rushing attack was non-existent, as Jacob Schmidt led the way with 14 carries for only 39 yards.

Michigan St. will prepare for the inaugural Big 10 Championship game next weekend, where it will play the winner of the Wisconsin Vs. Penn St. matchup later today. Northwestern will wait to learn which bowl it will be playing in.

Northwestern Vs. Michigan St. Score Update: Wildcats Trail 24-10 Heading Into Fourth Quarter

Although it has had some more success moving the ball down the field, Northwestern trails Michigan St., 24-10, heading into the final quarter. After both teams scored TD's on their opening drives of the half, the defenses tightened up and ensured that there was everything to play for in the final quarter.

Northwestern struck quick to open the half, as the Wildcats drove 69 yards in under two minutes. The majority of the drive came on one play, when Dan Persa hooked up with Drake Dunsmore on a 69-yard completion. Two plays later, Persa found Jeremy Ebert for a two-yard TD pass.

The Spartans responded in impressive fashion, putting together a TD drive of their own. The 10-play drive took over five minutes off the clock and was capped off by a 33-yard TD pass from Kirk Cousins to B.J. Cunningham.

Northwestern Vs. Michigan St. Score Update: Spartans Score Two Late TD's To Take 17-3 Lead

Through the first 25 minutes of the opening half, it seemed like this matchup between Northwestern and Michigan St. was going to be a low-scoring affair. However, the Spartans used two late TD's to turn a close game into a 17-3 advantage heading into the second half.

Northwestern will be very disappointed with the scoreline, as it was just a couple of yards away from having full momentum of this game. With the ball inside the five yard line, Treyvon Green fumbled as he was trying to fight his way into the end zone, and the ball was recovered by Michigan St. The Spartans then drove the ball down the field, with Le'Veon Bell scoring from seven yards out to finish off the drive.

After the Spartans TD, Northwestern had a chance to respond, but the offense couldn't get anything going and was ultimately forced to punt. With just 34 seconds remaining in the half, Keshawn Martin returned the punt 57 yards for a TD that extended the lead to 17-3.

The Wildcats offense has struggled to move the ball, with QB Dan Persa completing 8/12 for only 50 yards. Jacob Schmidt led Northwestern on the ground in the opening half, rushing for 36 yards on 10 carries.

Northwestern Vs. Michigan State Score Update: Game Tied 3-3 Early In Second Quarter

With a little over one quarter in the books, the Michigan State Spartans and the Northwestern Wildcats are tied 3-3. The Spartans opened scoring in the game with a 25-yard field goal by Dan Conroy to cap off a 13-play, 72-yard drive that started midway through the first quarter. The Wildcats then responded with an 11-play, 44-yard drive that culminated with a 34-yard field goal by Jeff Budzien early into the second quarter of play.

The Spartans have gotten off to a slow start through the air, with QB Kirk Cousins on completing 2/6 passes for 22 yards and an interception, but they have been ripping off big chunks of yardage on the ground. Le'Veon Bell already has six carries for 34 yards, and Kirk Cousins has added two scrambles for 21 yards as well.

For the Wildcats, QB Dan Persa has been sharp in the early going, completing 9/12 passes for 50 yards, including two passes to Kain Colter. On the ground, Wildcats have cobbled together 64 yards on 13 carries.
