Despite Loss Of Persa, Northwestern Upsets No. 10 Nebraska

Although it lost its starting QB heading into the second half, Northwestern delivered a stunning upset, as the Wildcats went into Lincoln and knocked off No. 10 Nebraska. The Wildcats were able to hold on for the surprising victory despite losing senior QB Dan Persa to an injured shoulder. However, sophomore QB/WR Kain Colter delivered in the clutch to propel Northwestern to its second consecutive win.

The real story of the game was the Northwestern defense, which managed to force timely turnovers throughout the game. The Wildcats did an excellent job of slowing down Nebraska RB Rex Burkhead, limiting him to only 57 yards rushing in the game and forcing a key redzone fumble.

In the absence of Persa, Kain Colter showed his ability to make big plays. Colter threw for 114 yards, including a huge 81-yard TD pass to Jeremy Ebert early in the 4th quarter. Colter also scored what proved to be the game-winning TD on a 1-yard run. That touchdown capped off 13-play drive that took 7:36  off the clock and included a key 4th down conversion by Colter.

In the loss, Nebraska QB Taylor Martinez played one of the best games of his career. Martinez completed 29/38 attempts for 298 yards and 2 TD's. Martinez also ran for 62 yards in the loss. With the loss, Nebraska fell out of first place in the Big 10 - Legends division.

Northwestern Vs. Nebraska Score Update: Wildcats Hold 14-10 Lead

Despite an injury to starting QB Dan Persa, Northwestern still holds a 14-10 lead heading into the 4th quarter at No. 10 Nebraska. The combination of Kain Colter and Trevor Siemian has been effective in replacing Persa, with Colter rushing for a touchdown early in the third quarter. The Wildcats had a chance to extend their lead, but Siemian threw a key interception in the endzone.

Nebraska has continued to receive strong play from QB Taylor Martinez. Martinez threw a touchdown late in the third quarter to Tim Marlowe that helped close the gap to 14-10. Martinez has completed 17/19 attempts to keep the Cornhuskers in the game. The Wildcats defense has done a nice job slowing down Nebraska RB Rex Burkhead, limiting the steady RB to only 61 yards rushing through three quarters.

Northwestern Vs. Nebraska Score Update: Wildcats Lead 7-0 After First Quarter

Northwestern appears to have generated some momentum from its victory over Indiana last week, as the Wildcats have jumped out to a 7-0 lead at Nebraska at the end of the first quarter. Northwestern senior QB Dan Persa was magnificent in the opening 15 minutes, completing 7 of his 8 attempts.

The lone score of the game came from senior RB Jacob Schmidt, as he finished off an outstanding 80-yard drive with a 2-yard touchdown run. As strong as the offense has been, the play of the Northwestern defense has been even more impressive. The Wildcats have limited big plays from the normally explosive Nebraska offense, limiting Nebraska QB Taylor Martinez to only 15 yards rushing.

Nebraska RB Rex Burkhead has continued his impressive play, rushing for 41 yards and also making three receptions for 30 yards.

Nebraska Vs. Northwestern Game Time, TV Schedule And More

Not many people expect Northwestern to ride into Lincoln on Saturday and defeat 9-1 Nebraska, but, well crazier things have happened. It was only two years ago that Iowa State shocked the Cornhuskers on the very same field, a fact that Nebraska coach Bo Pelini assuredly reminds his team of whenever a massive underdog like Northwestern comes to town. But none of that is to say that the Wildcats are anywhere close to being inept; though they currently sport a record of 3-5, Northwestern has already knocked off Illinios this season and has hung close in losses to Iowa and Penn State. Pat Fitzgerald's guys can score with anybody (they're fresh off dropping 59 points on Indiana), so can you blame Northwestern fans for having a little hope?

For Nebraska fans, there is plenty of good news. They look to be the better team, they're playing at home, where they have yet to lose this season, and their defensive backfield is rounding into top form just as NU's Dan Persa, one of the top quarterbacks in the Big Ten, rolls into town.

As the secondary has taken shape, the pass defense has gotten better. Nebraska goes into the Northwestern game ranked 11th nationally and fifth in the Big Ten in pass defense.

The game may, at some point, get ugly, but regardless of who ends up winning, offensive fireworks are all but guaranteed.

College Football Odds, Week 10: Nebraska Cornhuskers Heavily Favored Against Northwestern Wildcats

The Nebraska Cornhuskers are the No. 10 team in the nation and beat then-ranked Michigan State with ease last week. The Northwestern Wildcats aren't a ranked team, and had to beat the Indiana Hoosiers last week just to break a five-game losing streak.

So it probably shouldn't surprise anyone that our partners over at Odds Shark have the Cornhuskers as heavy favorites this week against the Wildcats. Nebraska is currently a 16-point favorite, and has some serious momentum these days after knocking off the Spartans.

Expect there to be some serious scoring in this game, as the current over/under is set at 63 points. The Wildcats have really struggled on defense this year, so expect Nebraska's vaunted running game to, well, run wild this Saturday.
