Northwestern Vs. Minnesota Score Update: Wildcats Bowl-Eligible Following 28-13 Win Over Minnesota

Following a 24-14 loss to Penn St., which dropped its record to 2-5, it appeared that Northwestern would struggle to become bowl-eligible for a fifth consecutive season. However, the Wildcats have rallied around senior QB Dan Persa, and following the 28-13 victory over Minnesota, are now bowl-eligible and playing some of the best football in the Big 10.

After an aerial assault from Persa in the opening quarter, which saw him throw for 2 TD's and lead another scoring drive, the Wildcats appeared to be on their way to another high-scoring performance. Instead of continuing to score at such an impressive rate, the offense actually sputtered throughout the rest of the game, with the only points outside of the first quarter coming on a late TD run by Jacob Schmidt.

It was the Northwestern defense that led the way after the first quarter. The Wildcats forced two turnovers, including a key redzone interception in the third quarter, and sacked Minnesota QB MarQueise Gray twice. The Golden Gophers were able to run the ball on the Wildcats, with Gray rushing for 147 yards and senior RB Duane Bennett adding 127 yards on the ground. However, the defense did an excellent job of limiting big plays in the victory.

Northwestern closes out the season with a key trip to No. 15 Michigan St. Minnesota will hope to end the season on a positive note when it hosts Illinois.

Northwestern Vs. Minnesota Score Update: Wildcats Defense Helps Keep 21-10 Advantage Heading Into Final Quarter

The Northwestern defense continues to make big plays, as the Wildcats lead 21-10 over Minnesota heading into the final quarter. This game has big implications for Northwestern since a victory would mean the Wildcats would be bowl-eligible for the fifth consecutive season.

With the offense struggling to find a rhythm after scoring 21 points in the opening quarter, it has been the Northwestern defense that has been instrumental in maintaining the double-digit lead. With Minnesota driving down to the five yardline, it was Brian Peters who made the play of the game, intercepting Minnesota QB MarQueis Gray in the endzone to help preserve the lead.

Northwestern QB Dan Persa has completed 18/27 for 174 yards and 2 TD's. Senior RB Jacob Schmidt leads the Wildcats rushing attack, as he has rushed for 42 yards on seven carries.

Northwestern Vs. Minnesota Score Update: Wildcats Lead 21-10 At Half

After a high-scoring first quarter, which saw Northwestern and Minnesota combine to score 28 points, the second quarter saw only three points scored. However, the Wildcats will be just fine with the defensive display, as they hold a 21-10 advantage over Minnesota at the half.

Northwestern QB Dan Persa put together an efficient first half, completing 13/19 for 122 yards and 2 TD's. Kain Colter opened the scoring for the Wildcats, catching a 7-yard pass from Persa. Demetrius Fields also had a receiving TD for Northwestern. Fields led the Wildcats with 34 receiving yards in the opening half. The other TD for Northwestern came from Treyvon Green, who rushed in from two yards out.

The Golden Gophers found success running the ball, with Duane Bennett rushing for 78 yards only 13 carries. Junior QB MarQueis Gray added 34 yards on the ground and also threw for 54 yards.

Northwestern Vs. Minnesota Score Update: Wildcats Up 21-7 After First Quarter

The Northwestern Wildcats' offense is once again producing at a high level, as the Wildcats lead the Minnesota Golden Gophers 21-7 after one quarter of play. Northwestern QB Dan Persa has been on fire during the early action, going 8/9 for 72-yards to go with two touchdown passes. The most recent touchdown drive came on a 2-yard tun by Treyvon Green with 2:29 remaining in the first quarter, and the Wildcats have scored touchdowns on all three drives thus far. The biggest spark for the Wildcats has been provided via special teams, with kick returner Venric Mark breaking off two long returns to set up the offense with great field position.

Minnesota's offense has not been particularly good this season, to they may struggle to keep pace with the high-octane Wildcat offense throughout the game.

Northwestern Vs. Minnesota Score Update: Another Shootout Brewing As Wildcats Lead 14-7 Early

After the Northwestern Wildcats took the opening drive in for a quick touchdown, the Minnesota Golden Gophers responded with a seven-play, 66-yard touchdown drive of their own, culminating in a 5-yard rush by Marqueis Gray. Both teams got their first scores fairly quickly, as the Wildcats took only 1:26 for their touchdown, and the Golden Gophers responded in 2:25.

When the Wildcats got the ball back with the score tied 7-7, Venric Mark once again produced a long kickoff return to give the Wildcats great field position, this time with a 55-yard return. With that prime field position, Dan Persa quickly marched the offense down the field again on an eight-play, 43-yard touchdown drive, capped off by a 28-yard TD from Persa to Demetrius Fields. If you like offense, it might be a good time to tune in.

Northwestern Vs. Minnesota Score Update: Wildcats Score On Opening Drive, Lead 7-0

The Northwestern Wildcats are off to a hot start against the Minnesota Golden Gophers. The Wildcats received the opening kickoff and got a quick 68-yard return by Venric Mark, setting up a touchdown drive highlighted by a Dan Persa seven-yard touchdown pass to Kain Colter.

Persa went 3-3 for 20 yards on the opening drive, including the TD pass, and the Wildcats offense did not face a third down as they drove in for the score. The drive took only one minute and twenty-six seconds to complete. Grabbing the early lead at home against a struggling Golden Gophers team is the best start the Wildcats could have hoped for today.
