Northwestern vs Rice Update: Wildcats Down Owls 28-6

Saturday's game had all the makings of a potential trap game for Northwestern. The Wildcats are in the middle of the Big 10 season and are coming off a huge victory against the Nebraska Cornhuskers last Saturday in Lincoln. Coach Fitzgerald wouldn't let the Wildcats look past the Rice Owls though, as Northwestern went on to a 28-6 victory at Ryan Field in Evanston.

Dan Persa led the Wildcats offense on Saturday. Persa has had a tough season mainly because of injuries. Against Rice the senior QB looked more like the preseason Heisman Trophy Candidate he was expected to be. Persa went 25 for 32 for 372 yards and four touchdowns.

Jeremy Ebert continued his magical season against Rice. Ebert caught seven passes for 208 yards and two touchdowns. The highlight of his afternoon was a 90-yard touchdown reception that put Northwestern on the scoreboard. The 90-yard touchdown was the second longest receiving touchdown in Northwestern history.

With the victory the Wildcats improved to 5-5 on the season and are still in position for a bowl game. Northwestern will need to defeat Minnesota next weekend or Michigan State on the 26th to become bowl eligible. Both of those games are at home.

After Saturday's loss the Rice Owls drop to 3-7 on the season.

Northwestern Vs. Rice Score Update: Northwestern Holds Comfortable 21-0 Lead At Halftime

Although it took some time to find their rhythm on the offensive end, the Northwestern Wildcats have found their groove and hold a comfortable 21-0 lead at the half against Rice. Senior QB Dan Persa threw 2 TD's late in the second quarter to help break open a close game, while the Northwestern defense has kept Rice off the scoreboard.

Persa has been very sharp in his return from a shoulder injury, throwing 3 TD's in the opening half. Persa has completed 14/18 for 278 yards. His favorite target so far has been Jeremy Ebert, who has 5 catches for 173 yards. Along with the 173 yards receiving, Ebert also has 2 TD receptions, while Demetrius Fields added a 15-yard TD.

On the defensive end, the Wildcats have been particularly strong, forcing Rice to punt on its first five possessions. The Wildcats also forced a key interception late in the second quarter, which led to a TD.

Northwestern Vs. Rice Score Update: Wildcats Jump Out To 7-0 Lead

After an emotional victory at Nebraska last week, the main focus for Northwestern was to avoid an emotional letdown in its matchup against Rice. While the offense hasn't been clicking at a high level, the Wildcats have done enough to hold a 7-0 lead after the opening 15 minutes.

Following a shoulder injury that saw him miss the second half against Nebraska, Northwestern QB Dan Persa has come out strong, throwing for 111 yards and a TD in the opening quarter. The lone score came on a 50-yard TD pass to WR Jeremy Ebert, who already has 116 yards receiving. Senior RB Jacob Schmidt rushed for 11 yards on three carries in the opening quarter.

While the offense has stuttered, the strong play on the defensive side of the ball has carried over from the win over Nebraska. The Wildcats defense allowed only 61 total yards in the first 15 minutes, and held the Owls to a measly 2.6 yards per rush.

Rice Vs. Northwestern Game Time, TV Schedule And More

The Northwestern Wildcats are looking to extend their winning streak and get one step closer to bowl eligibility with a win over the Rice Owls on Saturday afternoon. The Wildcats have won two straight games, both on the road in Big Ten play, following a five-game losing streak. Last week, they pulled off a clutch upset of Nebraska in Lincoln, and now the path to six wins and bowl eligibility appears more manageable.

The Owls are in must-win territory, as they have win out in order to reach bowl eligibility. They're coming off a 41-37 win over UTEP, which halted a three-game losing streak. Rice has had trouble stopping opposing offenses all season and they're going to need a big effort to slow down a Northwestern offense that ranks second in the Big Ten in total offense.

Game date, time: 12:00 pm ET, Saturday, Nov. 12

Location: Ryan Field, Evanston, IL

TV channel: Big Ten Network

Spread: Northwestern is favored by 17 points

Series history: Rice leads, 4-2
