Tigers Vs. White Sox: Detroit And September Don't Mix For Chicago

The Detroit Tigers completed a three-game sweep of the Chicago White Sox to erase Chicago's lead in the AL Central this weekend and now the two teams are tied with 72-61 records and 29 games remaining. Jim Margulus of SB Nation's White Sox blog, South Side Sox, pointed out that Detroit getting the best of the White Sox in September is not new:

Let's update that. Since the first game of this past series took place on Aug. 31, we can only say the White Sox are now 0-14 against the Tigers in September since Sept. 6, 2010. It could have been 15 so easily! This is what passes for consolation these days.

I never pinned the root cause on Ozzie Guillen, because the sources of these no-shows are multifold. However, I did want to see if the mere change of a manager would able to influence the other tumblers, and so far, the answer is a solid "nope."

The White Sox will get another opportunity to turn that September record around, though, hosting the Tigers for a four-game series Sept. 10-13.

White Sox Vs. Tigers Final Score: Justin Verlander Leads Detroit To 4-2 Win

Justin Verlander out-dueled Chris Sale on Sunday night and the Detroit Tigers defeated the Chicago White Sox 4-2, completing a three-game sweep in the process. The win also moved the Tigers into a tie for first place in the AL Central.

Related: White Sox roster settling after call-ups, returns, injuries

The White Sox got on the board first thanks to Alejandro De Aza's solo home run to start the game, but Verlander settled into his usual groove from there and took control of the game. He finished with 11 strikeouts.

Sale kept Detroit's offense quiet until the fifth inning, when Brennan Boesch tied things up with a solo shot of his own. Delmon Young gave the Tigers the lead and the win with a three-run home run in the sixth.

The White Sox return home for a series against the Twins beginning on Monday.

Tigers Vs. White Sox Score Update: Aces Dominate Despite Solo Home Runs; Tied 1-1

Alejandro De Aza homered on the second pitch of the game off Justin Verlander to supply the White Sox only offense thus far, but Tigers outfielder Brennan Boesch tied the contest with a solo homer of his own to tie the game at 1-1 through five innings of play.

Other than the Boesch home run, Sale has pitched marvelously allowing only one other hit while striking out three. Verlander has also pitched well, settling down after the De Aza lead off blast to strike out eight and allow only two more hits.

This contest weighs heavily on the postseason race the AL. Chicago entered this series with a slight lead on the Detroit Tigers in the AL Central, but after dropping the first two contests of this series, they find themselves with only a one-game lead.

Gavin Floyd Injury: White Sox Pitcher To Throw Bullpen Session Monday

Placed on the 15-day disabled list with an elbow injury on Aug. 28, White Sox starter Gavin Floyd is expected to throw a bullpen session on Monday for the first time since reporting the injury according to CSNChicago.com.

"There is soreness," Floyd told CSN's Dan Hayes on Sunday. "Not on every throw. Certain throws it aggravates me. Hopefully I just continue throwing and it will progress."

Even though his MRI last week revealed no serious damage, it's clear that White Sox manager Robin Ventura wants to make sure Floyd is fully healthy again before tossing him right back into the team's pennant race. The 29-year-old right-hander was 9-9 with a 4.55 ERA through 24 starts this season before the injury, and will need to prove to his organization that he's without a doubt 100% if he wants to rejoin the rotation according to Ventura.

"First he has to go out there with no pain," Ventura said. "But right now, there’s still a little bit in there that I wouldn’t feel comfortable even setting a time for him to pitch right now."

White Sox Vs. Tigers: Adam Dunn Unlikely To Play Sunday With Injury, According To Report

Adam Dunn was not listed in the Chicago White Sox lineup for their crucial game game with the Detroit Tigers on Sunday, and Dan Hayes of CSN Chicago is reporting that he may not make an appearance at all off the bench.

Dunn has been feeling discomfort in his right oblique and did not play in the team's 5-1 loss to the Tigers on Saturday. After receiving a treatment on Sunday, he is hoping to work out in the batting cage during the game to see if he could make a pinch hitting appearance.

Dunn knows that while this is a very important game for Chicago, there is more at stake if he were to risk injuring it further.

"I want to be in there today," Dunn said. "I understand why I'm not. It's fine. It sucks, obviously. But I'd rather miss today than miss (30) games."

Tigers Vs. White Sox Starting Lineups: Alejandro De Aza To Start In CF, Hit Leadoff

Set to make his return to manager Robin Ventura's lineup after being removed from the disabled list, promising outfielder Alejandro De Aza is slated to bat leadoff and and play center field on Sunday night against the Detroit Tigers.

De Aza was placed on the 15-day disabled list on Aug. 21 with bruised ribs, and his hitting .281 with 21 steals and 44 RBI this year during a breakthrough campaign. De Aza and his team will need to be extra focused on Sunday evening in order to finish the series on a high note however, as Detroit's Justin Verlander will aim to put memories of a woeful last start behind him with a bounce-back performance.

Opposing last year's Cy Young winner in the series finale will be none other than Chicago's own 2012 Cy Young contender in left-hander Chris Sale. Sale's 15-5 overall record and 2.81 earned-run average are each enough to put him firmly in the race for the most prestigious pitching award, but out-dueling Verlander head-to-head could be exact what he needs to shift most of the momentum to his side.

Here are Sunday's starting lineups:

White Sox
1. Alejandro De Aza - CF
2. Kevin Youkilis - 3B
3. Dewayne Wise - LF
4. Paul Konerko - 1B
5. Alex Rios - RF
6. A.J. Pierzynski - DH
7. Alexei Ramirez - SS
8. Tyler Flowers - C
9. Orlando Hudson - 2B
Chris Sale - SP

Tigers
1. Austin Jackson - CF
2. Omar Infante - 2B
3. Miguel Cabrera - 3B
4. Prince Fielder - 1B
5. Delmon Young - LF
6. Jhonny Peralta - SS
7. Avisail Garcia - RF
8. Brennan Boesch - DH
9. Gerald Laird - C
Justin Verlander - SP

Tigers Vs. White Sox: Alejandro De Aza Returns From DL For Sunday's Game

The Chicago White Sox have reinstated outfielder Alejandro De Aza from the 15-day disabled list prior to Sunday night's game against the Detroit Tigers, as Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports reports. De Aza has been out since Aug. 18 with a bruised rib cage.

De Aza was initially pulled out of Chicago's lineup last month with back soreness, but it was later revealed that De Aza's injury was actually near his rib area. He eventually was placed on the DL retroactive to Aug. 18, forcing the team to use the likes of Jordan Danks and DeWayne Wise.

The center fielder has spent the past few days with Triple-A Charlotte playing rehab games, but his reinstatement indicates that the team is prepared to bring him back into the fold. It's unclear whether he's playing Sunday night against the Tigers, but he'll at least be active and available to play.

MLB Standings: White Sox Hold 1-Game Lead In AL Central

Currently riding a three-game losing streak, the Chicago White Sox now lead the AL Central by just one game over the Detroit Tigers entering Sunday's action. The White Sox have lost consecutive games in Detroit, cutting their division lead from three games to just one within a matter of days.

With an overall record of 72-60, the White Sox are still in a strong position to make the postseason. Even if they somehow manage to fall behind the Tigers in the AL Central standings, a wild card spot is still within reach. Chicago is currently just one game behind the Baltimore Orioles for the second wild card, and three games behind the Athletics.

The White Sox do have some other reasons to be optimistic as well, including a strong run differential. Teams that score significantly more than their opponents tend to do better going forward, and Chicago has a much stronger run differential than either Detroit or Oakland.

Tigers Vs. White Sox Preview: Chris Sale Tries To Help Chicago Avoid Sweep

The Chicago White Sox will try to avoid a sweep by the Detroit Tigers Sunday with their ace pitcher Chris Sale (15-5, 2.81 ERA) on the mound for them. The game starts at 7:05 p.m. CT. A win by the Tigers moves them into a tie with the White Sox for first place in the AL Central.

Sale has not had much success against the Tigers in two starts this season. Sale gave up five earned runs (tied for a season high), seven hits and four walks in seven innings in a 7-1 Chicago loss July 21. Sale also took a loss to the Tigers in April.

The Tigers counter with Justin Verlander (12-7, 2.80 ERA), who is coming off his worst start of the season, allowing eight earned runs in 5.2 innings in a lost to Kansas City last week. Verlander beat the White Sox on July 20 in his only start against the team this season.

White Sox Vs. Tigers Final Score: Chicago Drops 2nd Straight To Detroit, 5-1

The White Sox dropped another game to the Tigers on Saturday night, losing 5-1 to the team from Detroit.

Detroit is now two games behind Chicago for the division lead, so Sunday's rubber match will be huge for both teams.

The Tigers scored runs in the third, fifth, seventh and eight innings. Brennan Boesch hit an RBI triple in the third to get the Tigers on the board, then Miguel Cabrera plated Boesch with an RBI single to center field. Delmon Young added to Detroit's run total with a solo home run in the seventh inning after having scored a run in the fifth on right fielder Avisail Garcia's base hit.

The White Sox rallied in the ninth inning Orlando Hudson's RBI triple, but it was too little, too late for the White Sox.

White Sox Add 6 To Active Roster As MLB Rosters Expand

The Chicago White Sox made six roster moves Saturday, expanding their Major League roster to 31 players. Major League Baseball rosters were allowed to expand from 25 to 40 starting today.

The White Sox recalled pitchers Deunte Heath and Brian Omogrosso from Triple-A Charlotte and purchased the contract of first baseman Dan Johnson from Charlotte. Omogrosso played briefly for the White Sox this season. Heath and Johnson have been in the minors all season.

The team also recalled second baseman Orlando Hudson and pitcher Leyson Septimo from their injury rehab assignments. The White Sox reinstated catcher Tyler Flowers from the paternity leave list.

White Sox Vs. Tigers Game Preview: P Francisco Liriano Looks To Extend White Sox Division Lead

The White Sox look to rebound from a 7-4 loss at Detroit Friday, a defeat that pulled the Tigers within two games of Chicago at the top of the AL Central.

While the series itself won't decide the division - the two teams have a four-game set Sept. 10-13 in Chicago - the White Sox have dropped four of their last five, all to AL contenders (three at Baltimore, and last night's loss at Detroit).

It doesn't get any easier for the White Sox, as they'll face hard-throwing Max Scherzer (14-6, 4.13 ERA) who is 6-1 with a 2.75 ERA over his last eight starts.

The two-game cushion the White Sox have over Detroit (70-61) comes at a good time considering the road slump the Sox are currently suffering. They'll need a strong outing from starter Francisco Liriano (5-10, 5.06 ERA), who's allowed two earned runs in each of his last three starts (2-0).

First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. ET at Comerica Park in Detroit.

Tigers Vs. White Sox: Detroit Gains Ground In AL Central After 7-4 Win

After the Chicago White Sox had battled back to tie Friday's game twice, a three-run double by Delmon Young of the Detroit Tigers in the seventh inning helped Detroit beat Chicago to move within two games of the White Sox in the AL Central standings.

The Tigers took a 2-0 lead in the first inning after a two-run home run by Miguel Cabrera. The White Sox cut it to 2-1 in the second on a home run by A.J. Pierzynski. An RBI double by Andy Dirks in the second put the Tigers up 3-1, and an RBI groundout by Paul Konerko in the third cut the lead to 3-2. The White Sox tied it when Dewayne Wise was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the fourth. Jhonny Peralta homered in the bottom of the fourth, but Konerko tied it at 4-4 with a sac fly in the fifth.

Jake Peavy (9-10, 3.28 ERA) took the loss. He gave up six earned runs in six innings. Peavy walked Dirks and allowed a single to Cabrera in the bottom of the seventh. He was relieved by Matt Thornton, who hit Prince Fielder with a pitch and then allowed the double to Young.

Octavio Dotel (5-2, 2.88 ERA) picked up the win in relief of starter Doug Fister, who gave up 3 runs (2 earned) in five innings. Jose Valverde picked up his 27th save after pitching a scoreless ninth.

Tyler Flowers Will Return To The White Sox On Saturday

The absence of backup catcher Tyler Flowers is expected to last just one day, as Comcast Sports Network Chicago is reporting that the catcher will return to the team for Saturday's game against the Detroit Tigers.

Flowers was placed on the paternity list on Thursday night, following a 5-3 loss to the Baltimore Orioles, so that he could attend the birth of his first child. On Friday, his wife gave birth to Mia Therese Flowers.

In replacement of Flowers, the White Sox purchased the contract of Triple A-Charlotte player, Hector Gimenez, who singled in his only at-bat. Flowers is batting .231 on the season and has 10 RBIs. He had a six-game hit streak broken up by the Orioles on Wednesday.

2012 MLB Standings: White Sox Look To Create Distance From Tigers

The White Sox have a chance to distance themselves from the Tigers, as Chicago begins a three-game series in Detroit on Friday.

Chicago is three games up on Detroit in the AL Central standings. The rest of the division is in the rear-view mirror, as Kansas City is in third, but 13 games back of the White Sox.

On the other hand, the Tigers have a chance to finish the weekend tied atop the standings. As far as the wildcard, the Tigers are three games back there, as well. The Oakland Athletics and Baltimore Orioles are tied for the wildcard lead.

The White Sox last won a division title in 2008. This weekend's series in Detroit could be a turning point for one of these teams.
