Eric Stults got off to a solid start on the mound for the White Sox but ran into trouble in the bottom of the fifth inning and gave up a pair of runs to the Indians. This came after the White Sox scored a run in the top of the inning, and with rain showers threatening the game, has the potential to prove decisive.
With two out in the fifth, Stults walked catcher Lou Marson, who then stole second. Michael Brantley singled to score Marson and advanced to second on the throw from the outfield. Brantley then scored on a single by Jason Kipnis.
