MLB Draft 2012: Courtney Hawkins To Sign With White Sox For $2.475 Million

Chicago White Sox first round pick Courtney Hawkins will travel to Chicago to officially sign his first professional contract with the team on Monday, as MLB.com's Jonathan Mayo reports. Hawkins will receive a signing bonus of $2.475 million, which matches MLB's recommended value for the 13th overall pick.

Mayo rated Hawkins as the 12th-best prospect in the entire draft class, an explosive athlete that flashes major power potential. Like most prospects that get drafted out of high school, Hawkins will likely take four-plus years to make an impact in the majors, but he's got rare star potential.

Upon signing, Hawkins will presumably become Chicago's best prospect, although the team has to be pleasantly surprised with the breakout of former first round pick Jared Mitchell this season.

Joey DeMichele Contract: 2B Agrees To Terms With White Sox

The Chicago White Sox have signed Arizona State second baseman Joey DeMichele for $400,000, according to Jim Callis of Baseball America. DeMichele was Chicago's third round selection.

Related: 2012 MLB Draft: Keon Barnum Signs With White Sox For $950,000

DeMichele hit .336/.398/.548 with six home runs and 47 RBI for Arizona State in 2012. He led the team in batting average (.336), stolen bases (12) and triples (7). By signing a pro contract, DeMichele has given up his final year of college eligibility.

The White Sox signed DeMichele for $41,100 below slot value, which means they can now disperse that money to other draftees (if they choose to do so).

2012 MLB Draft: Keon Barnum Signs With White Sox For $950,000

According to Jim Callis of Baseball America, first round supplemental pick Keon Barnum has officially signed with the Chicago White Sox. The young prospect reportedly signed for $950,000, which is more than $100,000 under his slot value of $1,052,500, freeing up some cash for the other picks.

The left-handed Barnum went to the White Sox at the No. 48 overall selection -- a reach according to prospect guru Keith Law -- and the organization hopes he can develop into a solid slugger at either the first base or left field position.

Barnum's contract with the Sox will cause him to forego his scholarship to play baseball at the University of Miami. He hit five home runs with an impressive .417 batting average in his final season in high school.

2012 MLB Draft: White Sox Earn Praise For Hawkins Selection

One of the media's top prospect analyst, ESPN's Keith Law, has published his latest analysis of the draft selections from the American League. According to Law, the Chicago White Sox made a prudent and fortuitous move when they made OF Courtney Hawkins their top choice in the 2012 MLB Draft:

Chicago White Sox

Summary: They capitalized when Courtney Hawkins (1), expected to go right ahead of them, fell into their laps, grabbing the kind of high-upside position player prospect their system has lacked over the past few years. His backflips probably made him a fan favorite already but his performance should cement that soon.

But they did not make the right call with their first round supplemental pick:

Keon Barnum (1A) had no business going on Day 1, not after a poor performance this spring that had him struggling with contact even though he's already 19 years old.

Overall, though, Law praised the White Sox selections, which could be a good sign with respect to improving a minor league system ranked worst in the MLB.

White Sox Draft Picks 2012: South Siders Select 12 High School Prospects

The Chicago White Sox closed out their 2012 MLB Draft on Wednesday, and in the end they grabbed 41 new players, including 29 collegiate prospects and 12 high school players. The prize pick of the draft class was high school outfielder Courtney Hawkins, a high-upside pick with plenty of athleticism and power potential. He could instantly become the top prospect in the entire organization, so that should be a thrill for fans who have been inundated with news of the depleted minor league system for years.

In a further break from tradition, Kenny Williams and company also grabbed a high school player with their second pick. First baseman Keon Barnum is another young player with huge power potential at the plate, and the Sox are hoping both players are cornerstones for the future.

As for a positional breakdown, the Sox selected 19 pitchers (15 RHP, 4 LHP), four outfielders, 14 infielders and four catchers. For a complete list of the 2012 Draft class for the White Sox, click this link.

2012 MLB Draft Results: White Sox Complete 12th Draft Under Kenny Williams

Hoping to improve arguably the worst farm system in all of baseball, the Chicago White Sox completed their 12th draft under GM Kenny Williams on Wednesday afternoon. It's the first MLB Draft to follow the new spending rules within the CBA, which were pushed for by White Sox owner Jerry Reinsdorf.

Generally one of the cheapest teams in all of baseball when it comes to the draft despite playing in one of the nation's biggest markets, that's no longer as much of an issue now that CBA rules limit how much teams can spend in the draft. Reinsdorf was one of the key figures behind the changes.

On Wednesday, the final 25 rounds of the draft were completed, allowing Williams to put the final touches on his newest draft class. The White Sox did leave their comfort zone this year by nabbing a pair of prep bats with their first two picks, but they proceeded to take just two more prep players in their subsequent ten picks.

We're through the first 30 rounds of this year's MLB Draft and the Chicago White Sox continue to make selections as they try to bolster a weak farm system. 2012 MLB Draft: CSN Chicago Breaks Down White Sox's Picks

Rounds two through 15 of the 2012 MLB Draft were completed on Tuesday, and over at CSN Chicago, J.J. Stankevitz has a complete breakdown of the selections made by the Chicago White Sox. Here's a glance at the team's third-rounder:

Round 3, Pick 108: Joey DeMichele, 2B, Arizona State University

For a second baseman, DeMichele has shown decent power, hitting 15 home runs in just under 400 at-bats in the last two years (stats go up to Memorial Day). He's a low-strikeout player who doesn't walk a ton, relying mostly on contact skills to boost his OBP near .400 with the Sun Devils.

With the 76th pick in the 2012 MLB Draft, the Chicago White Sox selected right-handed pitcher Chris Beck from Georgia Southern University. The 6-foot-3 junior opened the season with a solid ranking on Baseball America, but he dropped a bit after an underwhelming spring. According to his MLB.com scouting report, Beck has the potential to develop three MLB pitches that could be average or better. His fastball sits at 92-93 mph and his changeup shows late sink and solid deception. He has the size, arm and stuff to become a top-of-the-rotation guy if he meets his potential.

The White Sox selected outfielder Courtney Hawkins from Carroll High School (TX) with the No. 13 overall pick and first baseman Keon Barnum out of King High School in Florida with the No. 48 overall selection.

The White Sox are next on the clock at picks No. 108 and No. 141. If you want to follow along, check it out live on MLB.com.

2012 MLB Draft Results: White Sox Scouting Director Says Day 1 Picks Have 'Huge Ceilings'

The Chicago White Sox are excited about the players they nabbed on the first day of the 2012 MLB Draft. Okay, so every team is excited about their draft picks after Day 1 and perhaps White Sox Scouting Director didn't quite get the imagery correct when he told Sox blog South Side Sox Courtney Hawkins and Keon Barnum each have a "huge ceiling," but this is the time to just let it ride and enjoy the process. Besides, there will be plenty of time to wait before either one hits the MLB squad.

Laumann noted the Sox broke from their pattern by selecting a pair of high school prospects, he thinks both players hold great power potential at the plate and that each bring serious skills to the table. Here is a bit more from that South Side Sox story:

These two will develop "not quickly" and they're viewed as the leaders of the "next wave of group of guys".

Hawkins is more advanced but both have "huge ceilings".

When asked about what Hawkins needed to improve upon specifically, Laumann spoke generally about how "the biggest thing is making contact". Draftees generally all "have size, strength, speed" but it's how they convert those tools to skills that is important. If Hawkins and Barnum "make enough contact, they'll hit a ton of home runs".

2012 MLB Draft: White Sox Tell First Round Pick Courtney Hawkins To Stop Doing Backflips

It didn't take very long for Courtney Hawkins to make his first impression. After the White Sox selected the outfielder from Carroll High School in Texas with the No. 13 overall selection, Hawkins completed a backflip on live TV. In a suit and dress shoes, no less.

Related: VIDEO: White Sox Draft Pick Courtney Hawkins Does Backflip On TV After Being Selected

While it was surely an impressive display of athleticism from the 6-3, 220 lbs. outfielder, the man who selected Hawkins wants him to cut it out.

Let's hope this works out better than the last time a Chicago team drafted a player who immediately turned into a YouTube sensation.

2012 MLB Draft Results: White Sox Take High School First Baseman Keon Barnum With Pick No. 48

The Chicago White Sox selected Keon Barnum, a first baseman out of King High School in Florida, with the No. 48 overall selection in the 2012 MLB Draft on Monday. Here's what MLB.com had to say about Barnum:

Related: 2012 MLB Draft Results: OF Courtney Hawkins Selected By White Sox At No. 13

For a player to profile at first, teams will typically want to see plenty of power and run production potential. Barnum, a Florida prep product, has both.A big, strong physical specimen, Barnum can generate a lot of bat speed and has the ability to drive the ball to all parts of the ballpark. He shows most of his home run power to the pull side, but there's plenty of raw pop there all-around. Barnum's fine defensively at first, and some have even asked to see him play an outfield corner.Like many young hitters with power, Barnum will get long with his swing at times and try to muscle the ball out. The ability to make adjustments and have a more refined approach will likely come with time and experience.

Barnum becomes the South Siders' second pick of the draft. The Sox selected Courtney Hawkins, a high school outfielder out of Texas, with the No. 13 overall pick earlier in the day.

2012 MLB Draft Results: OF Courtney Hawkins Selected By White Sox At No. 13

With the No. 13 overall pick in the 2012 MLB Draft, the Chicago White Sox selected outfielder Courtney Hawkins from Carroll High School (TX). According to Scott Merkin, Hawkins is the first prep OF that the White Sox have taken in the first round since 1984.

Related: 2012 MLB Draft: White Sox Looking For Impact Over Need

Here's a brief scouting report on Hawkins from MLB.com:

The Texas high school product was shooting up draft boards as the 2012 spring season began, thanks to a very successful summer. While he pitches and will touch 90 mph, his future is in the outfield. He has some swing-and-miss to his game, but he does have power. He has shown the ability to hit any fastball and can show pop to all fields, though he needs to improve his approach at the plate, where his over-aggressiveness leads to those misses. An average to a tick-above-average runner, he'll play center field for his high school team, but with his size, strength, power profile and at-least-average arm, the University of Texas commit profiles best as a corner outfielder in the future.

The Sox most recently used a first round pick on a pitcher, Chris Sale (2010), who has quickly developed into an important part of the team's rotation. Prior to that, the team went with a couple of college bats: Jared Mitchell in 2009 and Gordon Beckham in 2008.

MLB Mock Draft 2012: Cubs Draft Outfielder Albert Almora In MLB.com Mock Draft

The latest mock draft from MLB.com's prospect guru, Jonathon Mayo, has the Chicago Cubs selecting the second outfielder of the draft, grabbing Albert Almora with the No. 6 pick in the 2012 MLB Draft:

6. Chicago Cubs: Albert Almora, OF, Mater Academy (Fla.)

It's been Fried, Correa and Almora in this spot and there could be interest in all three, but we'll stick with the initial projection here.

Chicago enters the draft with three first round draft picks -- No. 6, No. 43 and No. 56 -- their most first-round picks since 2002 when the club have four selections in the opening round. The 2012 MLB Draft begins on Monday night at 6:00 p.m. CDT.

MLB Mock Draft 2012: White Sox Select Pitcher Michael Wacha In MLB.com Mock Draft

Jonathon Mayo of MLB.com has released his latest mock draft in anticipation of the upcoming June 4 MLB draft. According to Mayo, the Chicago White Sox will look to shore up their depleted minor league system with a pitcher out of Texas A&M University:

13. Chicago White Sox: Michael Wacha, RHP, Texas A&M

Chicago might have an interest in a high school bat like Hawkins, but they do tend to go for college pitching early, with Wacha getting the nod over Stratton.

The Sox are reputed to have one of the worst minor league systems in the MLB, but the team is hoping to add some crucial depth with their No. 13 pick in the draft. Wacha pitched 15 games in the 2012 NCAA season, owning a 2.21 ERA through 106 innings.

MLB Mock Draft 2012: College Pitcher Michael Wacha To White Sox In Baseball America Mock

The Chicago White Sox have a reputation of being conservative drafters, and the most conservative play in the MLB draft is taking a college pitcher. Naturally, the White Sox have been linked to various college pitchers who can hopefully move through a minor league system quickly en route to the majors. If the White Sox do decide to go in that direction, they'll be able to pick from a wide selection of college arms, including righty Michael Wacha of Texas A&M, who is tabbed by Jim Callis of Baseball America in his final mock draft:

Here is Callis on the selection:

13. WHITE SOX. Chicago would pounce on [Courtney] Hawkins but likely will have to choose between college arms. If [Kyle] Zimmer dropped, he wouldn't get past the White Sox. Many scouting directors say Duke righthander Marcus Stroman has the best arm in this draft and will race to the major leagues, but his 5-foot-9 frame has them looking at other options. Chicago could be the highest landing place for Stroman, though the Sox would prefer [Andrew] Heaney or Wacha.
Projected Pick: MICHAEL WACHA.

2012 MLB Mock Draft: Marcus Stroman To White Sox In Baseball Prospectus Mock

Duke Blue Devils RHP Marcus Stroman has arguably the best stuff of any pitcher in the 2012 MLB Draft, and if he was two or three inches taller than his 5-foot-9 frame many believe that he would be a top-five pick. Alas, in reality he's still a short right-handed pitcher, and that combination has long scared off many MLB teams, and it's widely believed that Stroman will be a high-end reliever in the majors even though he starts at Duke.

All of that will be too much for many teams, but if there's one team willing to roll the dice on Stroman, it may be the Chicago White Sox. The White Sox, of course, have had great success this season turning Chris Sale, a prospect who made the majors immediately as a reliever, into a starting pitcher, and Kenny Williams may decide to try to replicate that formula with Stroman.

In his most recent mock draft for Baseball Prospectus, Kevin Goldstein sees that scenario playing out:

13. Chicago White Sox ($2.475M): Marcus Stroman, RHP, Duke
A late rumor has the White Sox, always one of the most conservative of drafters, looking at Stroman with the belief that he could help the big league bullpen as early as September. If they turn away from the 5-foot-9 righty, the club is still connected solely to college pitchers, with the usual suspects of [Michael] Wacha, [Andrew] Heaney and [Chris] Stratton all mentioned.

2012 MLB Mock Draft: SB Nation's John Sickels Projects RHP Chris Stratton Will Go To White Sox

SB Nation's John Sickels has released his final mock draft ahead of the 2012 MLB Draft; he predicts that the White Sox will go with RHP Chris Stratton out of Mississippi State.

13) Chicago White Sox: I think this comes down to a high-upside high school bat (Hawkins, Seager, or perhaps speedy D.J. Davis) or the best college pitcher still on the board. In the end, Chris Stratton, RHP, Mississippi State has a great balance of upside and refinement.

2012 MLB Mock Draft: White Sox Nab RHP Chris Stratton In MLB.com's Latest

The Chicago White Sox are projected to select Mississippi State pitcher Chris Stratton with the 13th overall pick in the latest mock draft from MLB.com analyst Jonathan Mayo. Most mock drafts this year have the White Sox focused on landing pitching, but Mayo does note that Kenny Williams and company could surprise with their first pick.

Here's what Mayo wrote about Stratton:

The White Sox might have an interest in a high school bat like that of [Texas prep outfielder Courtney] Hawkins, but they tend to go for college pitching early. Stratton figures to be the best one still on the board and they scouted him closely down the stretch.

Over 96 innings with Mississippi State this year, Stratton has a 2.16 ERA with 115 strikeouts and just 19 walks. Here's a quick description of Stratton's stuff from ESPN (full scouting report is Insider-only):

Stratton flashes three above-average to plus pitches with a chance for solid-average command and a near ideal, projectable frame. He will work with a 91-94 mph fastball that can get up to 96 and will show occasional life with good command to both sides of the plate.

Even though he wasn't even drafted out of high school, Stratton has emerged as one of the elite pitchers in the difficult SEC. Given the weakness of Chicago's farm system, their first pick will become one of the team's top prospects immediately upon signing.

2012 MLB Draft: White Sox Will Focus On Pitching

The Chicago White Sox will pick 13th overall in this months 2012 MLB Draft, but scouting director Doug Laumann isn't feeling the talent. Laumann told the Chicago Tribune this draft class is "as thin as I've seen in a decade".

More newsworthy is Laumann hinting that the organization will again make starting pitching the focus of the draft this year.

"Typically it is," he said. "(The organization) has always said that pitching's where it starts. We kind of feel that way, although you certainly have to have people that can catch the ball and throw it across the infield."

The South Siders also own the No. 48 pick.

2012 MLB Mock Draft: Kevin Goldstein Predicts White Sox Will Take RHP Marcus Stroman

Kevin Goldstein of Baseball Prospectus updated his projected top 15 picks of the 2012 MLB Draft and has the Chicago White Sox selecting Duke starting pitcher Marcus Stroman:

13. Chicago White Sox: Marcus Stroman, RHP, Duke

The is where the run on the tier two college arms begin. Take the next three names and put them in any order, but it doesn't look like the Reds are on Stroman as much as some others. The White Sox would actually prefer Wacha if he's here.

Related: 2012 MLB Mock Draft: Keith Law Likes Matt Smoral For White Sox

Stroman had an outstanding year for an otherwise dreadful Duke team, striking out 136 and walking 26 in 98 innings pitched. He finished the year 6-5 with a 2.39 ERA.

2012 MLB Mock Draft: Keith Law Likes Matt Smoral For White Sox

One of the strongest and most persistent criticisms of Chicago White Sox general manager Kenny Williams has been his drafting, as the White Sox entered the season with what many people believe to be one of the worst farm systems in baseball. Granted, Williams and owner Jerry Reinsdorf prefer to spend their money in free agency as opposed to the draft, and Williams has had some hits in recent years, including SP Chris Sale and closer Addison Reed.

This year, the White Sox are picking at No. 13 overall in the first round, and they'll have a chance to get a very solid prospect. That prospect, according to the most recent 2012 MLB mock draft by ESPN's Keith Law, could be Ohio high school LHP Matt Smoral. The White Sox don't have a long history of drafting high schoolers, and Law does note that he believes that Chicago is otherwise looking at college pitchers.

Here's a slice of Law's scouting report on Smoral, who has been compared to San Francisco Giants SP Madison Bumgarner:

...his trouble staying healthy is a real red flag for teams, perhaps not enough to send him to UNC but enough to push him out of the top half of the first round, even though there are a number of similarities to Bumgarner that would otherwise put him there.

2012 MLB Draft: White Sox Looking For Impact Over Need

In a recent interview with the Chicago Tribune, the GM of the Chicago White Sox, Kenny Williams, made it clear that the team would be looking for the best players available in the upcoming draft first, not the players that best fit in the organization:

"What I’ve conveyed to him, first and foremost, is focus on the best player available at that time, the most impactful player at the spot we’re picking," said general manager Ken Williams ... "Sometimes if it’s an even kind of report where both players are just as impactful and there’s not one we sway toward one or another, he’ll ask me what’s our greatest need. So that’s how it works."

The White Sox currently have a farm system ranked among the worst in the MLB and will look to upgrade their system during the June draft.

2012 MLB Mock Draft: White Sox Take Pitcher Michael Wacha At No. 13 In Latest Projection From Baseball America

In the latest first round mock draft from Baseball America's Jim Callis, the Chicago White Sox select Texas A&M pitcher Michael Wacha with the 13th overall selection.

Wacha is 8-1 with a 2.21 ERA in 106 innings of work for the Aggies this season. He has demonstrated outstanding control in issuing just 17 walks, and he has struck out 107 batters. 2012 MLB Mock Draft: MLB.com Predicts White Sox Will Select Pitcher Chris Stratton

The latest 2012 MLB Mock Draft from MLB.com's Jonathon Mayo suggest the Chicago White Sox will select yet another college pitcher with their No. 13 overall pick:

13. Chicago White Sox: Chris Stratton, RHP, Mississippi State
The White Sox might have an interest in a high school hitter like Hawkins, but they tend to go for college pitching early. They have scouted Wacha, Stratton and Heaney closely in recent weeks. The latter two have helped themselves with strong performances down the stretch, and both threw very well in conference tournament play. Some believe that they like Stratton a touch over Heaney.

With a minor league system that ranks among the worst in the MLB, the Sox will look to add some young talent to their dearth of top tier prospects.

In his senior year (2012), Stratton managed an impressive 2.22 ERA with 107 strikeouts and only 19 walks.

2012 MLB Mock Draft: Baseball America Projects White Sox Will Take RHP/OF Courtney Hawkins At No. 13 Overall

Baseball America thinks the direction in which the Chicago White Sox go with their first pick depends on whether or not GM Kenny Williams believes his team is a contender. In this case, they project the Sox to go with a high school prospect:

13. WHITE SOX: If general manager Kenny Williams thinks his team can contend, Chicago figures to go for more immediate help from the second tier of college arms (Heaney, Wacha and Mississippi State righthander Chris Stratton). If Williams decided he has to move forward with rebuilding, the White Sox will go for a higher-ceiling, longer-term project such as Hawkins or injured Ohio high school lefthander Matt Smoral.
Projected Pick: COURTNEY HAWKINS.

MLB Mock Draft 2012: Michael Wacha Goes To Chicago White Sox In Minor League Ball Projection

The Chicago White Sox hold the No. 13 overall pick in the 2012 MLB Draft. For a team with one of the worst farm systems in baseball, the draft takes on extra significance. In the most recent mock from Minor League Ball, the White Sox are projected to take Texas A&M right-hander Michael Wacha. The 6-foot-6 junior is 8-0 this season with a 2.14 ERA for the Aggies.

The scouting report on Wacha certainly makes him sound like the type of player White Sox GM Kenny Williams often covets. Wacha is said to have a "low ceiling, high floor", meaning that he's seen as a safe selection who doesn't have huge upside.
