MLB Schedule Alterations Could Affect Cubs-White Sox Series, According To Report

The Houston Astros are moving to the AL in 2013 and Major League Baseball is reconfiguring the schedule as ar esult. Among the potential consequences of the changes, according to ESPN New York's Adam Rubin: natural interleague rivals will no longer be guaranteed home-and-home series. That includes series like Cubs-White Sox and Yankees-Mets.

With the Houston Astros moving to the American League West next season and the leagues becoming balanced at 15 teams apiece, natural rivals throughout baseball no longer will be guaranteed six games a season and home-and-home series, the sources said.

According to one of Rubin's sources, these rivalries would most likely be limited to one series in one ballpark most seasons, or perhaps two games at each ballpark. Either way, interleague rivals won't be seeing as much of each other as they had been.

White Sox 1B Paul Konerko Wins AL Player Of The Week

The Chicago White Sox have enjoyed yet another scintillating start to the season from their slugging first baseman, Paul Konerko. Through 21 games, Konerko has hit 5 home runs with a .383/.444/.679 slash, and the MLB has awarded him in corresponding fashion, naming him the AL Player of the Week:

Konerko, who turned 36 this March, has hit over 30 home runs in his past two seasons and in 6 of his last 8 seasons. As of Monday, Paulie is on pace for over 33 homers.

Hector Santiago Is Still Chicago's Closer, Says Robin Ventura

White Sox closer Hector Santiago has four saves this season, but he's also had his share of issues in the early going, and it was Matt Thornton who finished out the game on Sunday. In remarks about it afterward, manager Robin Ventura said he stuck with Thornton because of his history against the Red Sox batters he faced in that inning. So for now at least, it does not look like that decision represented a permanent change.

"It is nothing against Hector, he still will be in there in the ninth, but you're looking at guy with a body of work against those three guys," Ventura said after the game. "I felt confident leaving Matt in there."

White Sox vs. Red Sox Score Update: Gavin Floyd Helps Chicago Avoid Sweep

It turns out that a dominant performance from Gavin Floyd was all that was needed to help the Chicago White Sox avoid a sweep at the hands of the Boston Red Sox. Floyd had a no-hitter through the first 6 1/3 innings and completely dominated the Red Sox in a 4-1 victory that ended Boston's six-game winning streak.

The White Sox jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the first inning, with Adam Dunn providing a huge lift with a two-run homer off of Josh Beckett. The early lead was all that Floyd would need, as he controlled the potent Red Sox lineup. Floyd pitched 6 2/3 innings and allowed only one run, while striking out nine batters. With the victory, Floyd improved to 2-3 this season.

Red Sox Vs. White Sox Score Update: Gavin Floyd Has No-Hitter Through Six Innings

The Chicago White Sox are leading 3-0 against the Boston Red Sox in the middle of the sixth inning as starter Gavin Floyd has carried a no-hitter through the first six frames. The White Sox are hoping to get a win on Sunday to avoid being swept over the four-game series against Boston.

Floyd has been absolutely lights out for Chicago so far, giving up just one walk over the first six innings of play while striking out seven Red Sox hitters. He's already up to 90 pitches so it'll be interesting to see how things play out, but he'll presumably be given a shot to finish off the feat.

He still needs another nine outs, but Floyd would become the second White Sox pitcher to toss a no-hitter this year after Phil Humbert pitched a perfect game earlier this month.

White Sox Vs. Red Sox: Konerko Scratched, Fukudome In Left

The Chicago White Sox road to escaping their four-game series vs. the Boston Red Sox with a victory got even harder on Sunday morning with news that star DH Paul Konerko has been scratched from Sunday's line up thanks to a stiff neck. In his place will be Kosuke Fukudome, who is in left field today after Dayan Viciedo was shifted to DH.

Konerko has been absolutely mashing the ball so far in 2012, hitting .383/.444/.679 with five homers and 15 RBI. Fukudome, on the other hand, has been slightly less intimidating, hitting .227/.280/.273 in only 22 at-bats with the White Sox in 2012.

White Sox Vs. Red Sox Preview: Chicago Looks To Avoid Sweep At Hands Of Boston

The Boston Red Sox came into U.S. Cellular Field earlier this week as a team in turmoil and under the gun, but if the Chicago White Sox don't pick up a victory on Sunday, they'll leave as one of the hottest teams in baseball. The Red Sox have outscored the the White Sox 21-6 in the first three games of this series, and Robin Ventura's club will have to go through Josh Beckett if they want to grab that win.

Beckett has been so-so so far in 2012, shaking off an initial disaster start vs. the Detroit Tigers and following it up with three solid but unspectacular starts. In his last start vs. the Minnesota Twins, Beckett scattered five hits across six innings while allowing only two runs and striking out five. Beckett hasn't faced the White Sox since September 29, 2010, when he took the loss in a 5-2 Chicago victory.

On the hill for the White Sox will be Gavin Floyd, who has had two great starts this year and two others that were not so great. A potential bit of good news for Chicago is that Floyd has been solid vs. the Red Sox in his career, posting a 3.47 ERA with 39 strikeouts in just over 49 innings across seven starts.

Red Sox Vs. White Sox Final Score: Jake Peavy Hurls Complete Game In 1-0 Loss

The Chicago White Sox (10-10) could not overcome SP Jon Lester and the Boston Red Sox bullpen, falling to Boston (9-10) in a 1-0 pitching duel.

Jake Peavy (L, 3-1), making his fifth start of the season, managed to hold the Red Sox to only 1 run through 9 innings, striking out 7 and walking only 1 batter. The only extra base hit Peavy allow -- a double to RF Ryan Sweeny -- led to the game's only run as 1B Adrian Gonzalez scored him with an RBI single in the fourth inning.

1B Paul Konerko collected the only extra base hits for the White Sox, a pair of doubles off Lester, but the remainder of the team could only muster a combined four singles.

Red Sox Vs. White Sox Preview: Can Jake Peavy Be A Stopper On Saturday?

The Chicago White Sox lost their fourth-straight game on Friday night in a prototype John Danks loss, and now they turn to Jake Peavy to be the stopper on staff in a Saturday night contest against the Boston Red Sox. Peavy has been wonderful so far this season, posting a 1.88 ERA and a 26:6 strikeout-to-walk ratio over 28.2 innings pitched, so he may be the right man to get the Sox back on track. Meanwhile, Boston turns to struggling starter Jon Lester, who owns a 6.00 ERA and has given up a combined 12 runs in his last two starts (9.0 total innings).

White Sox Vs. Red Sox: Chicago Lose 10-3 To Boston For Fourth Loss In A Row

The Chicago White Sox lost to the Boston Red Sox 10-3 on Friday night at U.S. Cellular Field. The loss is their fourth in a row and leaves Chicago at 10-10 on the season, temporarily out of first place in the A.L. Central division.

John Danks lost his command in the sixth inning when he walked Adrian Gonzalez and then unleashed a wild pitch allowing Gonzalez to advance to second base. Danks went on to allow three singles, two walks and a double on the inning before being pulled for reliever Nate Jones. His final line was seven earned runs on 5.2 innings pitched.

A.J. Pierzynski had a strong game with a RBI double in the first and then he later scored in the third after an Alex Rios single. A Paul Konerko homerun to the bullpen in leftfield capped the scoring for the White Sox.

The White Sox continue with game three of their four game series against Boston on Saturday night.

Jesse Crain Injury: White Sox Reliever Headed To DL

The Chicago White Sox made it official on Friday, sending RP Jesse Crain to the DL and calling up SP Dylan Axelrod:

Crain had not pitched since April 20th while he struggled with an oblique injury. The nine-year veteran, who turns 31 in July, was a stabilizing force in the White Sox bullpen in 2011; he pitched 65 and 1/3 innings spread over 67 games for a 2.62 ERA and 3.70 FIP.

The 26-year-old Axelrod pitched breifly for the White Sox in 2011, starting three games for 18 and 2/3 IP. He managed an impressive 2.89 ERA and 3.29 FIP in his career debut, and has a 1.08 ERA and 2.24 FIP in 25 minor league innings this season.

Red Sox Vs. White Sox Preview: John Danks Aims To Stop Chicago's Three-Game Skid

The Chicago White Sox (10-9) have been surprising competitive out of the gate in 2012, but a quick three-game losing streak has the potential to throw things off track for a team that typically starts slowly in April. Chicago lost the first of a four-game series against the Boston Red Sox on Thursday night (while you were watching the 2012 NFL Draft), but the good news is that John Danks, Jake Peavy and Gavin Floyd are the next three starters in line to pitch.

Danks (2-2, 5.11 ERA) has been unspectacular so far this season, and it has a lot to do with the fact that he is on pace to post the highest walk rate of his major league career and he has allowed the highest rate of home runs per nine innings since 2007. The sample size is small, and it all probably means Danks is due for a regression in both respects, but the Sox could really use a solid start right now. Chicago is currently tied with the Detroit Tigers and just percentage points behind the Cleveland Indians for the top spot in the AL Central.

Red Sox Vs. White Sox Final Score: Chicago Loses 10-3

The Chicago White Sox lost 10-3 to the Boston Red Sox on Thursday night as starting pitcher Phil Humber struggled badly in his first outing since throwing the 21st perfect game in MLB history last week. Looking off from the beginning, Humber finished the day with easily his worst performance of the season so far.

Over five innings of work, Humber gave up nine runs on eight hits and two walks, with three different home runs making things especially difficult. A bullpen duo of Will Ohman and Zach Stewart combined to pitch four innings of one-run ball to end the game, but the damage had already been done at that point.

Chicago's offense was mostly stifled by Boston starter Felix Doubront, who gave up three runs over six innings. Boston reliever Junichi Tazawa was even better, striking out four batters while giving up just two hits over three scoreless innings to finish off the game.

Jarrod Saltalamacchia (two homers) and Kevin Youkilis (two singles, a homer, four RBI) led the way for Boston on offense. Paul Konerko had a pair of hits for Chicago, plus Dayan Viciedo hit his third homer of the season.

Red Sox Vs. White Sox Preview: Chicago Returns Home To Face Boston

The Chicago White Sox lost a heart-breaker on the road to the Oakland Athletics on Wednesday afternoon, but Chicago won't have to wait around thinking about the defeat for long. The Boston Red Sox come to U.S. Cellular Field on Thursday to start a four-game series. In the opener, Philip Humber will oppose 24-year old Boston starter Felix Doubront.

Humber, as you may have heard, pitched a perfect game in his last start against the Seattle Mariners. Humber's numbers are predictably sparkling. Humber enters against Boston at 1-0 with a 0.63 ERA and a 0.63 WHIP.

The White Sox enter 10-8, while Boston is 7-10.

White Sox Vs. Athletics Final Score: Chicago Blows Two-Run Lead In 14th Inning, Loses 5-4

The Chicago White Sox lost 5-4 to the Oakland Athletics on Wednesday after blowing a two-run lead in the 14th inning. Pitching hadn't been an issue for Chicago all night, but closer Hector Santiago simply couldn't find his stuff as the A's battered their way to a comeback victory.

After trailing 2-0 after the sixth inning, an RBI double by Kosuke Fukudome closed the deficit to one run in the seventh inning. And then, in the ninth, Paul Konerko hit a game-tying solo home run, the 400th bomb of his impressive big league career.

The two teams traded scoreless frames then for four innings until the White Sox broke through in the top of the 14th against lefty Jerry Blevins. After an error by Eric Sogard allowed the inning's first hitter, Dayan Viciedo, to get on base and a walk two batters later by Alejandro De Aza, Alexei Ramirez hit a two-out, two-run double to give Chicago the lead.

With Hector Santiago coming in, the lead was hopefully safe. The closer struck out Sogard to open up the bottom of the 14th, but he quickly unraveled from there. He gave up a single to Josh Reddick and followed that up by serving Yoenis Cespedes the game-tying two-run homer, blowing the save. That wasn't it, though, as he'd proceed to give up three more singles in a row, allowing Oakland to score the winning run.

The numbers are looking dim for Chicago's inexperienced closer at this point. Through seven appearances this season, Santiago has a 8.53 ERA with 10 strikeouts and four walks, plus he's 4-of-6 on save opportunities.

White Sox Vs. Athletics: Paul Konerko Launches 400th Career Home Run

Chicago White Sox first baseman Paul Konerko not only tied up the game with his home run in the ninth inning against the Oakland Athletics on Wednesday afternoon, he pushed himself up to 400 career home runs over his 16-year career.

Konerko, 36, has proven to be one of the most consistent power hitters in all of baseball since taking over as the White Sox starting first baseman in 1999. The numbers he's averaged annually since then are simply impressive: a .284 batting average, .361 on-base percentage, 28 doubles and 30 homers over 147 games. Over a 12-year period, few hitters have been as prolific.

But as much as anything, Konerko has been through thick and thin with the White Sox. A hero of the 2005 World Series champion team, Konerko has hit 393 of his 400 homers in a White Sox uniform since being acquired from the Cincinnati Reds in 1998 in exchange Mike Cameron. It's been one impressive career by Paulie.

White Sox Vs. Athletics Score Update: Scoreless Tie After Five Innings

The Chicago White Sox and Oakland Athletics are knotted up in a scoreless tie after five innings of play on Wednesday afternoon. A pair of young starting pitchers have been dueling all day, going back and forth with scoreless frames.

Chris Sale has been lights out for Chicago so far, giving up three hits and zero walks over five shutout innings while striking out four batters. Oakland's Jarrod Parker, acquired in the Trevor Cahill trade from Arizona, has been nearly as good, giving up four hits and a walk while striking out five.

Paul Konerko leads the Sox so far with a pair of singles and Alex Rios has a double, but the hits have added up at the right times. The A's didn't get a runner to second base until the fifth inning, but Sale got out of the jam.

White Sox Vs. Athletics Final Score: South Siders Lose In Oakland

The Chicago White Sox and Oakland A's were stuck in a scoreless tie until the bottom of the eighth inning on Tuesday night, when Oakland score a pair of runs en route to a 2-0 victory at O.co Coliseum. Kurt Suzuki got the scoring started in the eighth inning when he doubled to left field to score Daric Barton. Eric Sogard would add another run for the Athletics whe he singled to left to drive in Suzuki.

Gavin Floyd was brilliant for Chicago, but he's credited for the loss after Matt Thornton allowed Barton -- who Floyd walked to start the eighth -- to score. Floyd allowed two hits and two walks while striking out six in 7.1 innings. The defeat drops Floyd to 1-3 on the season.

White Sox Vs. Athletics Preview: Gavin Floyd Aims To Extend Chicago's Four-Game Winning Streak On Tuesday

The Chicago White Sox (10-6) claimed the first game of a three-game set against the Oakland Athletics (8-10) thanks to a complete game shutout by Jake Peavy, and now it is up to Gavin Floyd to extend the team's four-game winning streak on Tuesday night. As for the Athletics, they send lefty Tom Milone to the mound. Here is a quick scouting report on Milone from South Side Sox:

Milone is the lone southpaw in Oakland's rotation. He has displayed impeccable command and control in the minors, dominating at every level. He's 25 years old and never had problems with the longball in the minors, which will only be helped by playing in the Coliseum (ignoring ridiculous actual name of stadium). Milone throws a four-seamer in the upper 80s, a changeup, a cutter, and a curveball.

White Sox Vs. Athletics Final Score: Jake Peavy Shuts Out Oakland

Jake Peavy's impressive start to the 2012 season continued on Monday night in Oakland when the veteran pitcher hurled a complete game shutout to key the White Sox's 4-0 victory over the Athletics. Peavy allowed just three hits and two walks while striking out five in 107 pitches. The Sox improve to 10-6, while Oakland falls to 8-10.

Adam Dunn hit a solo homer in the fourth inning to put Chicago on the board first, his fourth blast of the year. Paul Konerko would make it back-to-back jacks for the Sox when he took A's starter Bartolo Colon deep for his third dinger of the year. White Sox Vs. Athletics Lineups: Alexei Ramirez Moves Up To No. 2 Spot, Brent Morel Down To No. 8

The Chicago White Sox will be looking to extend a three-game winning streak when they start a series in Oakland on Monday night, and a couple of changes to the lineup have been made. Brent Morel will get the start at third base, but he's no longer batting second. Alexei Ramirez will step into the two-hole and try to give the front end of the lineup a little more offense, while Morel has been moved to eighth. Paul Konerko will be DHing to rest a sore foot, which means Adam Dunn gets the nod at first base.
