White Sox Vs. Mariners: White Sox Win 7-4, Sweep Mariners

The Chicago White Sox completed a sweep of the Seattle Mariners, following Saturday's perfect game by Philip Humber with a 7-4 victory. Things were tied for much of the game but Chicago was able to break things open in the sixth inning, scoring three runs, and adding two more in the eighth.

It was tied at two when the action in the sixth started. Kevin Millwood issued a leadoff walk to Adam Dunn, who was then advanced to third on a Paul Konerko single. AJ Pierzynski reached base on a fielder's choice that saw Dunn thrown out at the plate, and Konerko moved to second. Alex Rios then gave Chicago the lead with a triple to deep right center, a perfectly placed shot that split the gap and landed on the warning track, bouncing to the wall. Millwood was pulled for Charlie Furbush, who retired the next two batters on fly balls, one of which scored Rios.

Seattle's bats went quit in the 5th inning and didn't start up again, leaving the score at 3-2 when Chicago came to bat in the 8th. Tom Wilhelmsen came in to pitch for Seattle and gave up a leadoff double to Paul Konerko, who was then replaced by pinch runner Alejandro De Aza. De Aza moved to third on an AJ Pierzynski single to left, then scored when Alex Rios singled to right. Kosuke Fukudome kept things going with another single, scoring Pierzynski. Brent Morel then struck out looking, and Gordon Beckham grounded into a double play to end the inning.

Chicago's pitching would prove to be capable of handling things from there, as Seattle went 1-2-3 in the eigth inning and Hector Santiago took on the top of the Mariners' order in the ninth. He blew a 95mph fastball past Chone Figgins for out number one, but Dustin Ackley managed a single to shallow left. Santiago handled the next two batters, getting Ichiro Suzuki to strike out looking and Jesus Montero to fly out to right center.

Chicago has now put together a win streak of eight games at Safeco Field. They now move on to Oakland for a series against the A's.

White Sox Vs. Mariners: Chicago Leads Seattle 5-4 In The Bottom Of The 6th

The Chicago White Sox lead the Seattle Mariners more than halfway through Sunday's game, taking a bit of time to answer Seattle after both teams scored two runs in the third. Seattle went on to score another two in the bottom of the fourth, and Chicago was unable to reply until the sixth.

Chicago's second saw Alexei Ramirez hit an RBI double and advance to third on the throw, scoring on an Adam Dunn single. Seattle immediately evened things up, with Jesus Montero and Alex Liddi picking up an RBI each. Seattle picked up another pair of runs in the fourth on a throwing error by pitcher John Danks and Casper Wells scoring when Dustin Ackley grounded into a fielder's choice.

Adam Dunn opened the sixth inning with a walk, advancing to third on a single by Paul Konerko. AJ Pierzynski grounded into a fielder's choice that left Dunn out at home, but Alex Rios stepped up and scored Konerko and Pierzynski. Kosuke Fukudome was next with a sacrifice fly, scoring Rios. Things came to an end with Brent Morel, who flied out to center to finish the inning.

Heading into the bottom of the sixth the White Sox are up by one, and John Danks is still on the hill. He's thrown 79 pitches so far, striking out six and walking three.

White Sox Vs. Mariners: Danks Looks To Lead Chicago To Series Sweep

Phillip Humber's perfect game will be fresh in everyone's minds when the Chicago White Sox and Seattle Mariners take the field on Sunday afternoon, but Sunday's game is a new game with new pitchers, and it will be up John Danks to power the White Sox to their first three-game sweep of 2012.

Danks has been okay so far this season, posting two quality starts in three chances, but he carries a 4.82 ERA into the game, though that will likely come down as the season wears on. In his last start vs. the Baltimore Orioles, Danks threw seven innings and gave up three earned runs on five hits while striking out five and walking two. The good news for him is that the Mariners line up is the most anemic that he's faced this season.

He'll be opposed by Mariners starter Kevin Millwood, who was stellar in his first start of the season vs. the Texas Rangers before getting blasted by the Cleveland Indians in his last time out. Millwood has not faced the White Sox since August of 2010, when he was a member of the Baltimore Orioles.

Game date/time: Sunday, April 22, 3:10 p.m. CT

Location: Safeco Field, Seattle, Wash.

Philip Humber's Perfect Game Earned Him Lots Of Text Messages, Twitter Followers

Before Saturday afternoon, Chicago White Sox pitcher Philip Humber was best known as a draft bust. Humber was the third overall pick of the New York Mets in the 2004 MLB Draft, but struggled in New York before being dealt to the Minnesota Twins in the Johan Santana trade before the 2008 season. It's safe to say Humber's reputation has been reset after his perfect game today against the Seattle Mariners. It stands to reason he'd be a lot more recognizable now.

Here are two examples of Humber's newfound recognition, from Tribune beat writer Mark Gonzales and CNBC's Darren Rovell.

Philip Humber Perfect Game: Chicago Pitcher Mows Down Seattle Mariners

Chicago White Sox starting pitcher Philip Humber threw a perfect game on Saturday versus the Seattle Mariners during a 4-0 White Sox win. Humber finished with nine strikeouts. The 29-year old righty threw the perfect game in just 97 pitches. Humber struck out Mariners shortstop Brendan Ryan on a controversial play to end the game.

Humber reached a 3-0 count on Michael Saunders to start the ninth inning but worked his way into a strikeout.

Paul Konerko hit the 398th home run of his career in the second inning. Konerko almost hit another home run, but his shot carried off the left field wall to go for an RBI single.

Alejandro De Aza singled in the ninth inning to score Brent Lillibridge in the ninth inning.

White Sox Vs. Mariners Update: Chicago Pitcher Philip Humber Perfect Through 5 Innings

The Chicago White Sox lead the Seattle Mariners 3-0 through five innings at Safeco Field and starting pitcher Philip Humber is dominating. Headed into the bottom of the sixth inning, Humber has a perfect game going.

The last White Sox starter to throw a perfect game was Mark Buehrle on July 23, 2009. I was there.

Paul Konerko hit career homer No. 398 in the second inning. Konerko almost had No. 399 but the ball bounced off the left field fence. Chicago catcher A.J. Pierzynski also drove in a run in the third inning.

The White Sox are looking to improve to 8-6 on the season.

White Sox Vs. Mariners Preview: Chicago Looks To Stay Above .500

The series opener in Seattle couldn't have gone any better for the Chicago White Sox (7-6), who got 11 strikeouts from Chris Sale and a 3-4 performance at the plate -- including two home runs, a double and five RBI -- from slugger Adam Dunn. In game two of the three-game set, Phil Humber takes the mound for Chicago, while the Mariners turn to Blake Beavan. If you don't know much about the young righty, let South Side Sox fill you in:

Blake Beavan sounds like one of those random imaginary minor leaguers MVP Baseball used to fill the lower levels with. But there are pictures and videos of him, so I assure you he is real. Beavan does not strike anyone out and barely did in the minors. He doesn't walk anybody, but pitching to contact can be a risky proposition when not in pitchers' parks. Beavan throws a low-90s fastball, a curveball, a changeup, and a slider.

Date / Time: 3:05 PM CT, Saturday, April 21, 2012

Location: Safeco Field, Seattle, Washington

Starting Pitchers: Philip Humber (0-0, 1.69 ERA) vs. Blake Beavan (1-1, 2.70 ERA)

White Sox Vs. Mariners Recap: Dunn Homers, Doubles In Victory

Adam Dunn went for 3-4 with two homers, a double and five RBI on Friday night in a 7-3 win over the Seattle Mariners in what is almost certainly the best game to-date in Dunn's baffling Chicago White Sox career. With Dunn providing ample run support, starter Chris Sale threw a stellar ballgame, striking out 11 Mariners while allowing three earned runs in 6.1 innings.

The White Sox jumped on Seattle and starter Hector Neosi early, putting up six runs in the game's first two innings, with the big blast coming in the form of a three run homer from Dunn in the top of the second that plated Alejandro De Aza and Brent Morel. The White Sox would be blanked until the eighth, with Seattle closing the gap to 6-3, before Dunn too Hisashi Iwakuma deep to pump the lead up to four, where it would stick for the remainder of the game.

The two will take the field tomorrow at 3:05 p.m. CT, with Phillip Humber opposing Blake Beavan.

White Sox Vs. Mariners: Dunn Hits Homer As Chicago Goes Up 6-0

The Chicago White Sox jumped on Seattle Mariners starter Hector Neosi early in the first inning of the teams' match up on Friday night, and they haven't looked back. The White sox put up two runs in the first, thanks in part to Adam Dunn, who would put a much bigger jolt in the ball later on in the third. The White Sox started off the game with a single from Alejandro De Aza and a walk by Brent Morel, which brought Adam Dunn up with two runners on base. Dunn then doubled De Aza home and moved Morel to third, latter of which was eventually brought by Alex Rios.

In the second inning, the White Sox would duble that output. With one out in the inning, Gordon Beckham double to right center, which was followed by a bunt single by De Aza. Morel then singled to bring home Gordon, and with Chicago up 3-0 and with two runners on, Dunn walloped a homer to right center to bring the score to 6-0, which is where it sits now.
