White Sox Vs. Astros Final Score: Chicago, Houston Play To 5-5 Tie

The Houston Astros and Chicago White Sox played to a 5-5 tie after nine innings at Minute Maid Park in Houston, Texas, on Wednesday afternoon. It was the final exhibition game for both teams before the regular season kicks off in full gear this week.

The White Sox initially took a 2-0 lead in the top of the fifth inning on a pair of RBI doubles by Gordon Beckham and Alejandro De Aza, but Chicago starter Phil Humber gave up three runs in the bottom of the inning to lose the lead. The two teams would trade the lead again in the sixth inning with both teams scoring two runs apiece.

Outfield prospect Jared Mitchell finally tied the game for good in the seventh inning with a solo home run off Houston's Kyle Weiland.

White Sox Opening Day 2012: Robin Ventura Slowly Reveals Lineup

New Chicago White Sox manager Robin Ventura has mostly kept his Opening Day lineup close to the vest for much of Spring Training, with the South Siders breaking camp after defeating the Houston Astros on Tuesday night, Ventura is starting to let us know what his Sox will look like when they take on the Texas Rangers on Friday. We already knew designated hitter Adam Dunn would hit third and first baseman Paul Konerko would hit fourth, and now we know who will be hitting behind them and infront of them.

Third baseman Brent Morel will hit second, while longtime catcher A.J. Pierzynski will hit sixth.

The decision to hit Morel so high in the order might strike some as curious. Here's Comcast SportsNet's J.J. Stankevitz breaking down the first part of Morel's 2011:

Through Morel's first 117 plate appearances last year, he didn't take a walk. He had a .237 batting average and a .566 OPS with just one home run. Morel took his first walk of the season on Memorial Day, and then proceeded to walk once in the months of June and July. His OPS wallowed below .600 through the end of August, although he showed signs of improvement toward the end of the month, taking three walks after Aug. 20.

He also hit eight homers and finished with a .893 OPS in September. As Stankevitz notes, Morel also finished with 15 walks in his last 103 plate appearances.

In Spring Training, Morel hit .317, but again showed an aversion to walks.

White Sox Vs. Astros Final Score: Chicago Wraps Up Spring Training With A Win

Chis Sale will be making the transition from a reliever to a starter this season as the Chicago White Sox attempt to replace longtime lefty mainstay Mark Buehrle in the starting rotation. Sale got the nod in the Sox's final Spring Training game before Opening Day against the Rangers on Friday, and he performed well in a 5-1 Chicago victory.

Sale improved to 2-1 in the spring by striking out six four in four innings. The lanky lefty was charged with one earned run, three hits and two walks.

The middle of the order powered the Sox offensively, which certainly has to be considered a good sign heading into the season. Adam Dunn and Paul Konerko hit consecutive home runs to lead off the fifth inning. Outfielder Alejandro De Aza also added a bases-loaded single in the second inning.

White Sox Spring Training 2012: Adam Dunn Most Likely Will Hit 3rd, According To Robin Ventura

While Robin Ventura hasn't been willing to name a closer just yet, he said Monday that Adam Dunn would most likely start out the year hitting in the No. 3 spot.

Monday, Ventura did reveal to reporters that he did like Adam Dunn hitting in the third spot, although he did say that could change Friday.

"He gets on base a lot," Ventura said. "Even though he might strike out a little bit, he does walk a lot. To me, that's a good thing in front of Paul (Konerko)."

White Sox Vs. Brewers Final Score: Late Outburst Gives Milwaukee 13-7 Win

Gavin Floyd struggled, the White Sox bullpen was shelled late, and the Milwaukee Brewers claimed a 13-7 win in Cactus League action on Monday afternoon.

Related: John Danks Will Start Opening Day For The Chicago White Sox

Floyd gave up four runs on seven hits in 4-2/3 innings of work, but Chicago's offense was able to bail him out and the White Sox had the lead when he left the game. But the Brewers teed off on Sox relievers, scoring two in the sixth, two in the seventh and five in the eighth to break the game open.

Jason Jaramillo hit a grand slam for Milwaukee in the eighth, while Cesar Izturis drove in three runs for the Brewers. Brent Morel was the only White Sox hitter to have a multi-hit day.

2012 White Sox Spring Training: Robin Ventura Not Yet Settled On A Closer

New Chicago White Sox manager Robin Ventura has yet to decide on a closer to start the 2012 regular season:

Speaking before the Sox’ final Cactus League game Monday against the Brewers, Ventura said, "hopefully when we’re winning in the ninth in the first game’’ when asked when his decision would be known.

"I will know and they will know,’’ Ventura said. "I don’t really feel the need to tell everybody and make a statement about it. I don’t see a need to do it.’’

Matt Thornton, who had the job to start last season, is in the mix again this season, along with Jesse Crain, Hector Santiago and Addison Reed.

White Sox Vs. Reds Final Score: Chicago Wins A Slugfest, 13-10

Jake Peavy allowed four runs on seven hits in four innings of work for the Chicago White Sox on Sunday, but the offense was there to pick him up, and they eventually pulled out a 13-10 victory over the Cincinnati Reds. One of the men responsible for the win was Dayan Viciedo, who hit his first home run of the spring.

"It definitely feels good," Viciedo said of his first spring homer. "I wasn't looking for a home run. It's one of those things that I started off Spring Training a little bit slow. I've been working on things and as the games have continued to progress, I'm feeling better."

White Sox Vs. Rockies Recap: Lefty Prospect Pomeranz Silences Chicago Offense

The Chicago White Sox (12-17) could not solve the young prospect LHP Drew Pomeranz on Saturday afternoon, looking lost in the 3-1 win for the Colorado Rockies (16-12).

Pomeranz (W, 3-0) pitched 6.0 solid innings and allowed only 4 hits, 1 walk and 1 ER while striking out 2 White Sox batters -- lowering his spring ERA to an impressive 0.53. The White Sox did get some encouraging signs from a pair of their elder statesmen, however, as 1B Adam Dunn continued his hot spring with a 2 for 4 outing, including his 5th home run of the spring, and DH Paul Konerko had a 1 for 3 day with his first (and likely only) triple of the spring.

Pitching for the White Sox, LHP John Danks (L, 0--4) made very few mistakes on the day. He completed 6.0 innings with 2 K, 3 H and 1 ER, but still got tagged for his fourth exhibition loss at the hands of a sputtering White Sox offense and bullpen.

Chicago retakes the diamond on Sunday afternoon when the square off against the Cincinnati Reds at 3:05 p.m. CDT.

White Sox Option Dylan Axelrod To AAA, Reassign 5 Others

Opening Day is nearly upon us and the Chicago White Sox are making their final roster moves to solidify their April depth chart.

On Saturday, the Sox optioned right-handed pitcher Dylan Axelrod to Class AAA Charlotte, according to the team's official Twitter feed. Axelrod made his major-league debut with the White Sox in September of 2011 and ended up appearing in four games, including three starts. He owns a major league record of 1-0 with a 2.89 ERA in 18.2 IP.

The White Sox also reassigned five others to the minor leagues. RHP Brian Bruney, LHP Leyson Septimo, LHP Eric Stults, catcher Hector Gimenez and infielder Rey Olmedo were all given minor league assignments.

White Sox Sign Conor Jackson To Minor-League Deal, Assign Him To Triple-A Charlotte

The Chicago White Sox announced on Saturday that they signed 29-year old outfielder Conor Jackson to a minor-league deal and optioned him to Triple-A Charlotte. Jackson was originally drafted in the first round of the 2003 MLB Amateur Draft (No. 19 overall) by the Arizona Diamondbacks, and has played seven season in the major leagues. Over the course of his career, the six-foot-two outfielder has amassed a .271/.351/.407 line at the plate, but his most productive season is a distant memory at this point.

In 2008, Jackson produced 3.0 Wins Above Replacement (rWAR) over 621 plate appearances and 144 games, according to Baseball Reference, but he has failed to come anywhere close to those numbers since that time. In June of 2010, the Diamondbacks traded him with cash to the Oakland Athletics for Sam Demel, in 2011 the Athletics dealt him with cash to the Boston Red Sox for Jason Rice, and after signing with the Texas Rangers this past offseason he was released on March 26 in a round of Spring Training roster cuts.

This is a low-risk investment for the White Sox, and if Jackson can recapture his 2008 form, it might just pay off. Otherwise the move provides outfield depth in the minor league system and another experienced major league player to elevate in a pinch if the injury bug hits the Sox.

White Sox Schedule 2012: Chicago To Miss Yu Darvish In Opening Series

Japanese pitching sensation RHP Yu Darvish will not start against the Chicago White Sox, according to ESPN Dallas.

The 25-year-old right-handed pitcher will reportedly wait until Monday, April 9, to make his regular season MLB debut against Ichiro Suzuki and the Seattle Mariners. Instead, the White Sox will take on RHP Colby Lewis, LHP Derek Holland and LHP Matt Harrison.

Darvish pitched in Japan's NPB league for the last five years, sporting a dominant 1.72 ERA in a league where the average ERA hovers around 4.00 (and 3.00 in 2011 when the league changed its rules concerning their official baseballs). In December, the Texas Rangers won the negotiation rights to Darvish when they placed a reportedly $51.7 million bid, and then shortly after signed him to a six-year, $60 million deal.

White Sox Vs. Dodgers Final Score: Chicago Takes 3-1 Win

White Sox Spring Training: Chicago Goes With Split Squad, Loses Both Games

It's been a spring of ups and downs for the Chicago White Sox, but things were mostly down on Wednesday in a pair of Cactus League games against NL West squads. Going with split squads to face the Colorado Rockies in Scottsdale and the San Diego Padres in Glendale, both White Sox teams got smacked around in what was presumably a frustrating day for the organization.

The first loss came against San Diego, which had little trouble getting to Chicago's array of pitching fodder. The starter, Dylan Axelrod, gave the White Sox a decent effort with three runs allowed on eight hits in nearly six innings of work, but the bullpen quickly unraveled.

Terry Doyle gave up six runs while getting just four outs and Leyson Septimo replaced him to finish the eighth inning but gave up another four runs before ending it. Chase Headley was the star for San Diego with a double, home run, walk and 4 RBI.

Things were nearly as rough against the Rockies, who pounded Gavin Floyd en route to a 8-5 victory. The White Sox starter only gave up two runs in his first five innings, but he fell apart in a brutal six-run sixth inning. The bullpen prevented additional damage, but a ninth inning comeback fell short.

After failing to score for six innings, the White Sox offense came alive in the ninth inning as Chicago mustered a bit of a rally. Trailing by six runs, the White Sox managed to get the tying run on deck, but infield prospect Tyler Saladino struck out on three pitches to end the game.

Chicago did get some nice hitting performances despite the defeat, with Gordon Beckham, Paul Konerko, Jordan Danks and Saladino getting on base three times apiece against Colorado.

Chicago White Sox Release Dexter Carter

The Chicago White Sox have released minor league pitcher Dexter Carter, according to Kevin Goldstein of Baseball Prospectus. The 25-year-old has been stuck in Single-A since reaching the level as a 22-year-old way back in 2009.

Despite his lack of progress, Carter was actually once considered a pretty solid prospect. During the middle of the 2009 season, the White Sox actually traded Carter to the San Diego Padres as part of the trade that brought Jake Peavy to Chicago. At that point, Carter was in the midst of a breakout season (3.13 ERA, 143/32 K/BB over 19 starts), but things completely fell apart after he left the Chicago organization.

After badly struggling with the Padres through the 2010 season, Carter returned to the White Sox for the 2011 season with an eye on getting his development back on track. Things didn't get any better, though, as he struggled to the tune of a 6.65 ERA over 65 innings for Single-A Kannapolis.

At this point, as a 25-year-old pitcher that's struggling to even survive at the Single-A level, it's understandable to see why the White Sox have decided to cut ties.

White Sox Spring Training: Chicago Trades Christian Marrero To Atlanta

The Chicago White Sox have agreed to trade minor league outfielder Christian Marrero to the Atlanta Braves in exchange for future cash considerations, according to Mark Gonzales of the Chicago Tribune. The two teams made a similar move before the 2011 season when Atlanta acquired minor league outfielder Stefan Gartrell from Chicago.

Marrero, 25, has spent most of the past three seasons playing for Double-A Birmingham in the Chicago organization. In 2011, he hit .293/.385/.476 with 12 home runs for Birmingham while splitting time between first base, right field and left field.

His 2011 play was actually a solid improvement from the previous season, but he still didn't flash the kind of skill set that generally profiles for a limited defensive player. Atlanta has been searching for some outfield pop for a while now, though, and it likely won't cost the Braves much to take a flier on Marrero.

White Sox Clear Path For Eduardo Escobar To Make Major League Roster

The Chicago White Sox reassigned Dallas McPherson, Dan Johnson, Josh Phegley, Jim Gallagher and Jordan Danks to their minor-league camp on Tuesday, and although it looks like a peripheral series of moves, the path has been cleared for infielder Eduardo Escobar to make the opening day roster of the major league team. Escobar is known for his defense, but he has fared well at the plate this Spring -- hitting .471 in 17 games -- and is now in competition with Ray Olimedo for the final infield spot on the active roster. In truth, it would be a shock if Escobar doesn't make the team at this point.

Here is what the talented infielder had to say after surviving this round of cuts, via Adam Hoge of CBS Chicago:

"I'm really excited," Escobar said Wednesday. "I thank God for the opportunity in the organization. I've been working very hard and will continue to do that. I think that being here as long as I have, making the cut, shows the hard work that I've been doing."

"You could say I'm a natural shortstop, but by the same token, the more reps and practices I get in the different positions, the more comfortable I feel," Escobar said Tuesday. "(Playing all three infield positions) gives me the opportunity to highlight what I can do."

He will likely serve as a utility infielder and a defensive replacement at second base, shortstop and third base, but as J.J. Stankevitz of CSN Chicago notes, manager Robin Ventura will be challenged to pick his spots to use Escobar over Brent Lillibridge, who is far more accomplished as a hitter and has more experience at the major league level.

White Sox Vs. Dodgers Final Score: John Danks, Chicago Fall 4-3

New manager Robin Ventura announced lefty John Danks would be the Opening Day starter for the Chicago White Sox after Danks pitched well in a 4-3 Spring Training loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers. Danks retired the first 10 LA batters he faced and would allow two earned runs in seven innings while striking out four and walking no one. The Dodgers picked up the win when Jerry Sands hit an RBI single in the bottom of the ninth.

Third baseman Brent Morel, outfielder Dayan Viciedo and second baseman Gordon Beckham each has RBI singles for the White Sox in the loss. Juan Rivera singled in a run for LA. Andre Ethier hit an RBI double in the win for the Dodgers. Matt Treanor also had an RBI single for LA.

John Danks Will Start Opening Day For The Chicago White Sox

There was a time on the South Side when Mark Buehrle's name could be written in ink as the annual Opening Day starter for the Chicago White Sox. But with Buehrle fleeing this offseason to rejoin his former manager Ozzie Guillen in Miami as a member of the Marlins, the Sox announced today that pitcher John Danks will take the ball on Friday, April 6 when Chicago opens the season in Texas against the Rangers.

Considering Danks is a Texas native, the honor should carry added significance.

Danks started last season 0-8, which helped turn 2011 into the worst year of his career. Danks posted a 4.33 ERA in 27 starts and fished the season 8-12. This December, Danks inked a five-year contract extension with the White Sox.

White Sox Vs. Dodgers: Chicago Sends John Danks To Mound, Looking For Improvement

The Chicago White Sox (10-12) hope SP John Danks can get on track in his start against the Los Angeles Dodgers (11-8) Monday afternoon. Danks, who had an uncharacteristically high ERA in 2011 (4.33 through 170.1 IP) has struggled with his command in the 2012 Spring Training.

In his three starts, Danks has allowed 9 walks while striking out only 4 batters, and in his combined 9.0 innings, he has allowed 12 hits and 7 earned runs. Before White Sox fans become too concerned, however, it is important to consider that despite Danks' rough 2011 ERA, he had a career-low walk rate (6.3%) and a career-average strikeout rate (18.5%), suggesting the lanky lefty should improve if he can return to his 2011 form.

Here is a look at Monday's lineup:

White Sox Spring Training 2012: Sox Enter Final Full Week Of Cactus League Play

Baseball fans can rejoice, as we're now just a little over a week away from Opening Day 2012. The final full week of Cactus League play gets underway on Monday, and there's still plenty to watch for as the White Sox have their final tuneups for the regular season.

Here's how Chicago's schedule for the final week of Cactus League play shapes up:

Monday: at Dodgers, 3:05 p.m. CT
Tuesday: vs. Indians, 3:05 p.m. CT
Wednesday: split squad vs. Padres, 3:05 p.m. CT, at Rockies, 3:05 p.m. CT
Thursday: at Dodgers, 3:05 p.m. CT
Friday: at Royals, 8:05 p.m. CT
Saturday: vs. Rockies, 3:05 p.m. CT

Among the storylines White Sox fans can follow this week is the resurgent spring slugger Adam Dunn is having. After a miserable 2011, Dunn is hitting .276/.475/.724 with four homers in 29 Cactus League at bats so far. Sure, it's a very small sample size, but it's certainly encouraging, and hopefully for White Sox fans, it's a sign of things to come in the regular season.

White Sox Spring Training 2012: Chicago Acquires OF Greg Golson

The Chicago White Sox have acquired outfielder Greg Golson from the Kansas City Royals in exchange for cash considerations, according to Mike Swanson, Royals VP of Communications and Broadcasting. The move was just one of many that Kansas City orchestrated over the weekend as the Opening Day roster is beginning to take shape.

Golson, 26, is regarded as an absolute tool shed, but he's struggled to take advantage of those raw tools at baseball's highest levels. Over the past three years, he's bounced around with the Philadelphia Phillies, Texas Rangers and New York Yankees, and now it appears that he'll spend 2012 with Chicago.

Last season, Golson hit .263/.330/.385 with eight homers and 15 steals in 429 plate appearances while playing primarily center field for the Yankees' Triple-A affiliate. It was an improvement from his previous Triple-A performances, but he also continued to struggle with making contact at a decent clip.

White Sox Spring Training 2012: Chris Sale Hammered By Brewers

In one of his final starts before the start of the 2012 regular season, Chicago White Sox starting pitcher Chris Sale did nothing to disprove the lingering doubts about his ability to be a viable starter in the major leagues. On Saturday vs. the Milwaukee Brewers, Sale threw 4.2 innings, giving up eight hits and three earned runs while striking out three batters and walking one.

Sale game up two homers in the game, one to shortstop Alex Gonzalez and the other to third baseman Aramis Ramirez, neither of which will help convince skeptics that Sale will be able to get right handed batters out at a rate that will allow him to stay in the rotation. If anything good can be taken from Sale's start, it's that he continues to prove that he can strike batters out at an elite rate.

White Sox And Milwaukee Brewers Square Off In Spring Training Cactus League Action

Left-hander Chris Sale makes his third spring training start for the Chicago White Sox on Saturday as the Pale Hose visit the Milwaukee Brewers at Maryvale Stadium in Phoenix.

The 22-year-old Sale has struck out 12 and walked just one batter in 13 1/3 innings of work during spring training exhibition play. The Brewers will counter with veteran southpaw starter Randy Wolf, who sports a 3-0 record in Cactus League play this spring. The White Sox are expected to start Kosuke Fukudome in left field in Saturday's game with the Brewers, and shortstop Alexei Ramierz will bat cleanup.

The White Sox bring an 8-12 spring record into their game Saturday against the Brewers, who own a comparable exhibition-season record at 7-11. Both Chicago and Milwaukee went down to defeat to the Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday. A Dodgers' split squad hammered the White Sox 17-4, while another Dodgers' team defeated the Brewers 6-3.

The first pitch on Saturday is set for 3:05 CDT.

White Sox Rank No. 10 In Forbes' List Of Most Valuable Teams In MLB

Chicago White Sox chairman Jerry Reinsdorf and general manager Kenny Williams like to highlight expenses and downplay revenue when it comes to baseball business, but accroding to Forbes' list of Baseball's Most Valuable Teams, the White Sox are the tenth-most valuable franchise in Major League Baseball. Peripheral improvements like Bacardi at the Park and the Chicago Sports Depot have provided additional revenue streams to offset increases in payroll since the 2005 World Series Championship, and the White Sox actually increased 14 percent in value last year to $600 million.

Their annual revenue is actually the lowest mark of any top-10 team ($214 million), but as Forbes points out, the Sox have been creative in finding ways to increase that number:

The White Sox have been expanding their retail operations to boost revenue. Last year the team opened up Bacardi at the Park, a new restaurant across the street from U.S. Cellular Field. The Illinois Sports Facilities Commission, which built the stadium, paid $3.2 million for the construction of the new, 10,000 square foot, upscale restaurant, but the White Sox keep all the profits. The team also opened up a store late last year, the Chicago Sports Depot, which will sell sports apparel and paraphernalia across from the South Side stadium. The White Sox's lease with the ISFA, which allows the team to keep all profits from team-run operations on state-owned property, runs through 2029. Owner Jerry Reinsdorf has been reinvesting the revenue gains in the team, increasing payroll 12% over 2010, to $126 million by the end of the 2011 season.

MLB Rumors 2012: Seattle Likes Brent Lillibridge, But He's Not Available

Seattle Mariners GM Jeff Zduriencik "would love" to get White Sox utility player Brent Lillibridge but Chicago doesn't have any interest in dealing the Washington native, according to Jon Heyman of CBS Sports. The White Sox acquired Lillibridge from Atlanta in the Javier Vazquez trade and he emerged as a key role player with the team last season.

Lillibridge, 28, went through the minor leagues playing shortstop, but he spent most of 2011 split between the three outfield positions and first base. While he still struggled with strikeouts like he always has, he cut them down enough to show some major power for Chicago last season, bombing 13 home runs in just 216 plate appearances.

With an overall line of .258/.340/.505, Lillibridge was worth 1.3 WAR in roughly one-third of a season even while offering little defensive value, so he's clearly going to get some significant wear and tear off the bench with the White Sox this season. Given that he's under team control long-term, the Mariners would need to give up something of pretty good value to even start the discussion.

White Sox Spring Training: Chicago Re-Acquires Terry Doyle From Minnesota

The Chicago White Sox have re-acquired pitcher Terry Doyle from the Minnesota Twins, according to Mark Gonzales of the Chicago Tribune. Doyle was selected by Minnesota in the Rule 5 draft during the offseason, but now he's returning to Chicago as he wasn't going to make the team's 25-man roster.

Minnesota paid $50K in order to acquire Doyle from Chicago in the first place, and Chicago will return half of that money in order to get Doyle back. The 26-year-old spent last season split between Chicago's Single-A and Double-A affiliates, posting a 3.07 ERA with 122 strikeouts and 33 walks over 173 innings.

Doyle would have needed to stay on Minnesota's active roster or MLB disabled list all season in order to stay in the organization given his status as a Rule 5 pick.

White Sox Vs. Reds Final Score: Chris Sale Dominant, But Chicago Loses 1-0

In an encouraging development for the Chicago White Sox, Chris Sale was outstanding in his start against the Cincinnati Reds; he tossed six shutout innings, striking out six, walking none, and allowing just two hits. But the White Sox offense couldn't pick him up, and Chicago fell 1-0 in a pitchers' duel.

2012 White Sox Spring Training, Cactus League Standings: Chicago In 13th Place

The Chicago White Sox entered the spring trying to prove that they could compete in the American League Central after a disappointing 2011 season that saw several key hitters slump badly. But so far, they've had a rough time in Cactus League play, compiling just a 5-10 record. Spring training records aren't necessarily indicative of what's going to happen in the regular season, of course, but for a team looking for encouragement, these struggles don't help.

The 2012 Cactus League standings as of Monday morning:

Cactus League
Team W L Pct
Oakland 13 4 .765
San Francisco 11 5 .688
Los Angeles 8 4 .667
Seattle 11 6 .647
Los Angeles 9 6 .600
Kansas City 9 7 .562
Colorado 8 7 .533
San Diego 9 8 .529
Arizona 7 10 .412

Milwaukee 6 9 .400
Chicago 7 11 .389

White Sox Spring Training 2012: Jake Peavy Would Be Open To Closing

Chicago White Sox starter Jake Peavy impressed on Saturday, pitching five scoreless innings against the Seattle Mariners during a 5-0 White Sox win in Cactus League action at Camelback Ranch. Still, Peavy's White Sox tenure has been anything but a success, forcing constant speculation about his future with the club. Today, Peavy says he would be open to becoming a reliever in the future.

"If I can't stay healthy for 200 innings, if somebody says something about closing or being a reliever, I can do that, I can be a reliever," the White Sox pitcher said on Saturday. "How do I know that? I can be a reliever because I think I can. That's the bottom line. I can do something because I believe I can do it. If it comes down to that, I'll do it because I love this game.

Peavy is set to earn $17 million this season, making him the highest paid player on the Chicago roster. The team holds a $22 million club option on Peavy next year, with a $4 million buyout.

White Sox Vs. Mariners Final Score: Jake Peavy, Relievers Shut Out Mariners 5-0

The Chicago White Sox (4-10) finally saw some very promising signs from SP Jake Peavy as the Sox beat up on Seattle Mariners (11-6) in a 5-0 win.

Peavy (W, 1-2) pitched a scoreless 5.0 innings and held the Mariners lineup hitless with 5 K and 1 BB. A cavalcade of relievers -- including top prospect RP Addison Reed -- kept the Mariners off the scoreboard and allowed only a pair of hits.

Mariners reliever Hong-Chih Kuo, however, continued his disastrous Spring Training, allowing 4 H, 1 HR and 4 ER in the fifth inning alone. White Sox SS Eduardo Escobar had an excellent day at the plate as he managed a 2 for 3 outing with a homer and three RBI. 2B Gordon Beckham and UTIL Brent Lillibridge also added extra base hits, cracking a double each.

White Sox Vs. Mariners: Jake Peavy Looks To Rebound In Third Start

This spring has not been kind to Chicago White Sox SP Jake Peavy, who has given up nine earned runs in only 4.1 innings pitched. Peavy's spot in the White Sox rotation is of course guaranteed provided that he is healthy, but clearly both he and the team would like to see him preform better as the spring wears on.

He will get a chance to do that today against the Seattle Mariners, a team not exactly known for their hitting prowess. Here's the the White Sox line up today, with the first pitch at 3:05 p.m. CT:

Gavin Floyd Rumors: Orioles Showed Interest, Nearly Completed Deal During Offseason

The Baltimore Orioles were among the teams that showed interest in White Sox pitcher Gavin Floyd during the offseason, and serious discussions between both sides nearly led to the completion of a trade, according to Danny Knobler of CBS Sports.

Floyd is available again this spring, one of several starting pitchers on what could still be a busier-than-usual spring training market. Will the White Sox actually trade him this time? It's entirely possible. General manager Ken Williams is said to be anxious to make moves to improve a club that has been unimpressive in the early games of spring training.

Floyd, 29, is one of Chicago's most valuable assets, so the team is presumably expecting a significant return in any trade. Last season, he posted a 4.37 ERA over 193 innings, but defense-independent metrics have been more bullish on his performance.

The pitcher is owed $7 million for the 2012 season and the White Sox hold a $9.5 million club option for 2013.

White Sox Vs. Padres Final Score: Chicago Drops Another Game, 6-3

After dumping off some notable veterans over the offseason, as well as one experienced manager, the Chicago White Sox haven't exactly gotten off to a great start this spring. They dropped to 2-8 in Cactus League play this year with a 6-3 loss against the San Diego Padres on Tuesday.

Chicago actually led 3-1 through four innings, but the bullpen quickly gave up the advantage after relieving starting pitcher Gavin Floyd. Floyd, a major target of trade rumors recently, allowed just one run on five hits over his four innings of work, striking out five hitters while walking zero.

Charlie Leesman came in to relieve Floyd and failed to get a single out, though, surrendering four runs before Jhan Marinez would replace him and end the inning. San Diego got a shaky outing from starter Edinson Volquez, who gave up two runs in three innings, but its bullpen did a good job of limiting the White Sox offense.

Playing shortstop, Brent Lillibridge had a strong game at the plate for Chicago, going 2-for-2 with a double, a walk and a run scored, but he also committed an error in the field. The Padres got three hits from catcher Nick Hundley to lead the way, with first baseman Jesus Guzman and Jaff Decker adding two hits apiece.

Starting Pitchers:

CWS RHP Gavin Floyd (4.37 ERA, 3.81 FIP and 193.2 IP in 2011)

SDP RHP Edinson Volquez (5.71 ERA, 5.29 FIP and 108.2 IP)

White Sox Vs. Rangers Final Score: Chicago Rallies For 3-2 Win

Chicago's pitching effort was solid against Texas on Saturday, but for the majority of the game, it looked like the Rangers were going to prevail anyway. Texas shutout the White Sox offense for eight innings, and then Chicago came alive.

The White Sox got three runs in the bottom of the ninth inning against Rangers reliever Miguel De Los Santos; the player responsible for the game-winning hit was Ken Williams Jr., son of the current White Sox general manager.

White Sox Vs. Brewers Final Score: Chicago Falls to 0-3 In Spring Training

The Chicago White Sox sent out starter Jake Peavy for his Spring Training debut today against the Milwaukee Brewers with mixed results. Peavy gave up three runs and four hits over two innings or work, striking out two and walking no one as the Brewers defeated Chicago 10-6. The win moves Milwaukee's Spring Training record to 2-1, while the White Sox remain winless under new manager Robin Ventura, falling to 0-3.

Milwaukee shortstop Alex Gonzalez was the cause of many of the White Sox's woes today. Gonzalez smashed a two out double off Peavy in the first inning to score two. He would later triple and drive in two more runs off reliever Dylan Axelrod.

The highlight of the day for Chicago -- most likely the highlight of Spring Training thus far -- came when former first round draft pick Jared Mitchell smashed a two-run homer in the fifth inning. Third baseman Brent Morel also had two hits for Chicago.

John Danks Likely To Start Season-Opener For Chicago White Sox, According To Robin Ventura

On Tuesday afternoon, Chicago White Sox manager Robin Ventura said that as of now, lefty John Danks is his opening-day starter:

"Right now, he is going to be that guy," Ventura said. "We'll move on from there, but I like him as that guy for right now. I'm not making it official. It could schedule out that way.

"It's not an official official."

White Sox Vs. Angels Final Score: Chicago Loses 6-2

The Chicago White Sox dropped to 0-2 in Cactus League play with a 6-2 defeat at the hands of the Los Angeles Angels on Tuesday afternoon. White Sox starter John Danks did not have his best stuff and was knocked around for three runs in two innings of work. He also walked three batters.

"I thought I had enough behind the ball," Danks said after his spring debut. "My ball was doing what I wanted it to. It just wasn't going where I wanted to throw it. It's the first one. I'll be ready to go in five days or so."

White Sox Vs. Dodgers Final Score: Chicago Loses In Spring Training Opener, 6-4

The Chicago White Sox opened up 2012 Cactus League play against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Monday, and while the White Sox tried to mount a late comeback, they ultimately fell short and lost 6-4. Alexei Ramirez and Dan Johnson accounted for three of Chicago's six hits on the day and three of four RBI.

Phillip Humber started the game for Chicago and pitched two innings, allowing one hit and one run. The Dodgers eventually broke the game open with a five-run sixth inning, as White Sox reliever Nestor Molina struggled. The 6-1 deficit at that point proved too much to overcome, though the Sox did score three runs over the final three innings to make things more interesting.

White Sox Vs. Dodgers Preview: Phil Humber Takes The Mound In ST Opener

The Chicago White Sox (0-0) are starting the 2012 Spring Training season with reliever turned surprise workhorse, RHP Phil Humber. The Sox called the 29-year-old Humber into the starting rotation last season after spending five seasons split between the minors and long relief with various MLB teams.

Humber went on to pitch 163 solid innings in 2011, sporting a 3.75 ERA and 3.58 FIP. He enters the season as a favorite for at least the No. 5 slot in the rotation.

Here's today's lineup:

CF Alejandro De Aza
C A.J. Pierzynski
RF Alex Rios
1B Paul Konerko
DH Adam Dunn
SS Alexei Ramirez
LF Dayan Viciedo
3B Brent Morel
2B Gordon Beckham

The Sox will also look for a strong outing from DH Adam Dunn, who had an unredeemingly bad 2011 season, hitting only 11 homers for a .159/.292/.277 slash and -2.9 WAR. According to former White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen, Dunn's problems began as early as the 2011 Spring Training, so success now would go a long way towards relieving worried fans' fears.

Dunn and the other starters will likely get only a few innings today before reserves and prospects get their chances to play.

Philip Humber Will Start The First Spring Training Game For The White Sox

The Chicago White Sox rotation will have a distinctly different feel this year without longtime lefty Mark Buehrle stationed atop the rotation. In his stead, the White Sox will be counting on young flamethrower Chris Sale and Philip Humber to pick up their performances.

Today, it was reported that Humber will get the start in the White Sox's first Cactus League game on Monday.

Humber was better than expected in his first season in Chicago a season ago, but his performance really tailed off after a hot start. Humber still finished with a 9-9 record in 26 starts and posted an impressive 1.18 WHIP to go along with a 3.75 ERA.

MLB Offseason 2012: Chicago White Sox Chairman Jerry Reinsdorf Tells Fans Not To Write Off The Team

By most accounts, not a whole lot is expected of the Chicago White Sox in 2012, and it's tough to deny that a lot must fall together for the White Sox to compete for a playoff berth this season. But in an interview on Tuesday, Jerry Reinsdorf reminded fans that anything can happen in baseball.

"Don’t write us off," Jerry Reinsdorf said in an interview Tuesday with Comcast SportsNet. "Nobody thought we’d win the World Series in 2005, but we did. There are years when we think we’re great and we’re bad. I mean the funny thing about this game is that you can’t figure it out."

Related: White Sox Spring Training 2012: Paul Konerko Expects Gordon Beckham To Play Well

Reinsdorf also got into some numbers and talked a bit about regression to the mean:

"If you take a look at what used to be the Baseball Encyclopedia, and you look at the stats of the players who have played eight, 10, 12 years, if they have a really great year they almost always come back to what they were. If they have a bad year, they almost always come back to what they were."

The White Sox will be hoping that Adam Dunn and Alex Rios can get back to previously established levels of production this season.

White Sox Spring Training 2012: Paul Konerko Expects Gordon Beckham To Play Well

If the Chicago White Sox are going to surprise people in 2012, bounce-back seasons from Adam Dunn and Alex Rios are crucial. So too is improvement from second baseman Gordon Beckham, who hit .230/.296/.337. He hasn't quite captured the promise shown during his rookie season in 2009, when he hit .270/.347/.460.

But first baseman Paul Konerko thinks that Beckham has improved his mental approach and that he's ready for a breakout season:

"I think of Gordon and I just know where he’s at right now in his head and I think it's a good place," explained Konerko. "I think he’s going to have a big year. He's just kind of ready to take that step."

White Sox Spring Training 2012: Paul Konerko Says Off-Field Distractions Cost Team Wins In 2011

Not a lot went right for the Chicago White Sox in 2011 -- new acquisition Adam Dunn had a terrible season, as did Alex Rios, and Gordon Beckham was still searching for his rookie season performance level. There were also issues off the field of play, and first baseman Paul Konerko says that cost the team some wins, especially toward the end of the season:

"There were probably games and days given away because of people worrying about things that were not related to the game of baseball," Konerko said Tuesday. "Especially toward the end last year we were just giving away games, and you know big-league players should be mentally tougher than to have that stuff bother you ... but then it all came to a head, and I guess that's how things go. If it didn't go that way then no one would see the need to make a change."

Konerko also sounds happy to be getting a fresh start under new manager Robin Ventura, and says there will be no side issues with the 2012 team.

VIDEO: Chicago White Sox Players Talk About Mark Buehrle's Departure

Chicago White Sox spring training has a different feel to it this year with both Ozzie Guillen and longtime starting pitcher Mark Buehrle out the door.

Related: Chicago White Sox Open Spring Training Sans Ozzie Guillen For First Time Since 2004

In the video below, Robin Ventura, Matt Thornton and Philip Humber discuss Buehrle's departure and how the team might be able to replace his contributions both on and off the field.

Much of the answer to the question of replacing Buehrle, at least in terms of the production on the field, likely rides on Chris Sale's transition from the bullpen to the starting rotation, not to mention the health and effectiveness of Jake Peavy.

Chicago White Sox Open Spring Training Sans Ozzie Guillen For First Time Since 2004

On Wednesday, the Chicago White Sox opened spring training in the hot Arizona desert once again, much to the excitement of fans around the country. But for the first time since 2004, the manager at center stage orchestrating the whole production isn't Ozzie Guillen; rather, it's newly-minted skipper Robin Ventura.

As ESPN Chicago's Chris Silva reports, there's a bit of a different vibe around White Sox camp these days now that Chicago's boisterous ex-manager has taken his talents to South Beach. Silva spoke with numerous players about the change, and pitcher Chris Sale mentioned his optimism regarding Ventura:

I don't think he's going to be as loud and entertaining as Ozzie. But he's got a good head on his shoulders. He's very knowledgeable about the game and is ready to move forward.

Ventura has never managed at any level before, but he's got an exceptional reputation in the industry and the White Sox will presumably give him some time to figure things out.

White Sox Spring Training 2012, Pitchers And Catchers Report

2012 Spring Training will finally get going in earnest for the Chicago White Sox on Wednesday, and though most attention will surround new manager Robin Ventura, today will also see the reporting of Chicago's pitchers and catchers. There's not much suspense regarding who will be manning the dish for the South Siders this season, but there will be a bit of drama involved with the pitching staff, where top prospect Chris Sale has moved from the bullpen to the rotation and where Ventura has yet to decide on a closer.

But the games played during Spring Training should give us a much clearer picture on those questions than what we currently have, so for now here's the full list of pitchers and catchers that will be reporting for the Sox today.

White Sox Spring Training 2012 Preview: Chicago Pitchers And Catchers Report On Wednesday

The Chicago White Sox kick off the 2012 MLB Spring Training next Wednesday with pitchers and catchers reporting after a long winter break. The Sox then begin their Cactus League schedule on March 5 against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Here is a look at the reporting dates scheduled for the Sox:

2012 Chicago White Sox Reporting Schedule

Organization Pitchers & Catchers First Workout Position Players First full workout
Chicago White Sox Feb. 22 Feb. 23 Feb. 27 Feb. 28

The White Sox have a number of unanswered questions heading into Spring Training, but one of the most pressing is the fate of slugging DH Adam Dunn. The $56 million designated hitter hit only 11 homers in 2011, good for a career-worst .159/.292/.277 slash.

Dunn apparently had problems with his swing tracing back all the way to the 2011 Spring Training, according to former manager Ozzie Guillen. The Sox hope to get the 38-home-run Dunn back, especially given some of their other notable departures, including SP Mark Buehrle and closer Sergio Santos.

The starting lineup is expected to look a little like this:

2012 Projected White Sox Lineup

C: A.J. Pierzynski / Tyler Flowers
1B: Paul Konerko
2B: Gordon Beckham
3B: Brent Morel
SS: Alexei Ramirez
LF: Alejandro De Aza
CF: Alex Rios
RF: Dayan Viciedo
DH: Adam Dunn

The team will also have outfielders Brent Lillibridge and Kosuke Fukudome competing for playing and should have a heated competition at catcher between veteran A.J. Pierzynski and up-and-coming hitting catcher Tyler Flowers.

The rotation should have a new look too, as the White Sox deal with the free agency departure of Buehrle:

2012 Projected White Sox Rotation

1) John Danks
2) Gavin Floyd
3) Phil Humber
4) Chris Sale
5) Jake Peavy

The Sox management, led by rookie manager Robin Ventura, will get their first look at the new roster when action starts in early March. Here's a look at their first week of games:

2012 White Sox Offseason: Ozzie Guillen Says Problems With Adam Dunn's Swing Were Immediately Apparent

In a radio interview on Friday, former Chicago White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen said that problems with Adam Dunn's mechanics were evident from the start of spring training. Former hitting coach Greg Walker alerted Guillen to the issue in the first couple days of spring training in 2011.

"[Former hitting coach Greg Walker] says 'We have a problem,' " Guillen said Friday on "The Waddle & Silvy Show" on ESPN 1000. "I say 'What? Spring training is only a couple of days [old].' He says 'You've got to come out and see Adam Dunn's swing.' I said 'Don't worry about it. We've got a month and a half to get ready, go through spring training. Don't worry about it.' "

Guillen eventually went to watch Dunn himself and agreed with Walker's assessment. He added that Dunn tried "everything in his power to get better."

Related: 2012 White Sox Rumors: Paul Konerko Mulling Retirement In 2013

Dunn hit just 11 home runs in 496 plate appearances for Chicago in 2011. He'd hit at least 38 home runs in each of the seven seasons prior to that one.
