Mets rumored to have interest in White Sox catcher Tyler Flowers

Jesse Johnson-US PRESSWIRE

The New York Mets might have interest in trading for White Sox catcher Tyler Flowers.

The Chicago White Sox have some decisions to make about their starting catcher situation heading into the 2013 season, and it seems as if the New York Mets will be watching the process closely. According to the New York Post, the Mets may be interested in trading for Tyler Flowers to use in a platoon with Josh Thole next year.

The Sox still have to decide whether they want to bring free agent catcher A.J. Pierzynski back on a new deal, but the early indications are that Rick Hahn and the Sox are ready to move on from the veteran. Flowers would be a candidate to be traded if the Sox retained A.J., as A.J. would take up enough playing time to make Flowers expandable, but if Pierzynski is allowed to leave the Sox may attempt to put Flowers in a platoon situation similar to the one the Mets are seeking to create.

The Sox orginally acquired the 26-year-old backstop from the Atlanta Braves in a trade that sent former Chicago White Sox pitchers Boone Logan and Javier Vazquez out of town in 2008.

Flowers appeared in 52 games as a catcher, DH and first baseman for Chicago in 2012. He produced a .213/.296/.412 batting line over 153 plate appearances, and he threw out 14-of-42 potential base stealers during his time behind the plate.
