Chicago White Sox re-sign Dewayne Wise

Dewayne Wise will be back in a White Sox uniform next season after agreeing to a one-year contract with the club on Wednesday afternoon.

The Chicago White Sox re-signed free agent outfielder Dewayne Wise to a one-year contract worth $700,000 on Wednesday, the team announced. It's a rare major league contract for the journeyman, who has signed seven different minor league deals over the past three years.

Wise, 34, returned to the White Sox in early August after being released by the New York Yankees. During the 2008-2009 seasons, Wise was one of the key reserve outfielders deployed by then-manager Ozzie Guillen, but the club presumably grew tired of his offensive inconsistency.

Primarily a defensive specialist, Wise is likely best known in Chicago for the incredible catch he made to preserve Mark Buehrle's 2009 perfect game in the ninth inning. A career .228/.264/.385 hitter, he can offer some occasional pop, but his lack of OBP skills puts a serious limit on his ability to contribute at the plate.

Next season, Wise will presumably take on a role similar to the one he's covered with multiple teams over the past few years, that of the fourth or fifth outfielder. Chicago is already set with Alex Rios, Alejandro De Aza and Dayan Viciedo in the outfield, plus they have younger options like Jordan Danks, Jared Mitchell and recent addition Blake Tekotte.
