Third baseman and pitcher acquired by Chicago at midseason bought out of contracts

The Chicago White Sox announced Tuesday that they will not pick up the options on the contracts of third baseman Kevin Youkilis and pitcher Brett Myers. The White Sox paid $1 million to Youkilis to buy him out of a $13 million option, and $3 million to Myers to buy out a $10 million option.

Youkilis, 33, was acquired from Boston on June 24 in exchange for minor league pitcher Zach Stewart and utility player Brent Lillibridge. Youkilis appeared in 80 games for Chicago and hit .246/.346/.425 with 15 home runs and 46 RBI in 344 plate appearances.

The White Sox traded for Myers, 32, on July 21. Chicago sent pitching prospects Matthew Heidenreich and Blair Walters to the Houston Astros to complete the deal. Myers appeared in 35 games in relief for the White Sox and pitched 34.2 innings, striking out 21 and allowing 30 hits and nine walks with a 3.12 ERA.
