Sherjill MacDonald Signing: Chicago Fire Sign Dutch Striker To Designated Player Slot

The Chicago Fire announced on Tuesday they had signed international striker Sherfill MacDonald of the Netherlands. MacDonald had signed with the Fire earlier in the season, but had been awaiting visa issues to sort out before officially announcing his signing with Chicago.

He participated in his first practice with the Fire on Tuesday and offered a glimpse into what he hopes to bring to the team:

The 27-year-old MacDonald played most recently with the Belgian Koninklijke Beerschot Antwerpen Club, collecting 15 goals across 82 appearances. Beerschot AC has a number of impressive credentials, including three UEFA Cup wins and a pair of Cup Winner's Cups.

MacDonald joins a Fire team stuck halfway up the 2012 MLS standings, hoping for a late post-season surge. By signing MacDonal to the Designated Player slot, the team can afford to pay him a salary beyond what the normal salary cap restrictions would allow.
