As another disappointing season for the Chicago Cubs nears its end, general manager Theo Epstein reminded the team's passionate fan base on Friday that the rebuilding project he is undertaking is a slow process and could continue well into 2013, according to an article written by Doug Padilla of ESPNChicago.com.
Entering Friday, the Cubs are second-to-last in the National League Central division at 56-87, yet, according to the article, Chicago's attendance to date is good for sixth-best in the National League, as 2.47 million fans have walked through the gates into Wrigley Field.
It appears clear that fans won't stop going to Cubs games, and Epstein is working to give them a winner. However, from the article, he stressed the importance of patience:
I think obviously we really care about our fans and we want them to have a great experience, but we're trying to be transparent about it. We have a plan and we have a vision and it won't happen overnight, but given the way of things I think this is the best way to go.

Chicago Cubs pitcher Travis Wood is using the end of the 2012 season to make a case for his inclusion in the 2013 starting rotation. Wood is 6-11 with a 4.23 ERA on the season, but he has come on as of late allowing just one run over his last two starts.
Wood has been streaky all season, but ending the season on a good streak could earn him a spot in the Cubs long-term plans. Wood started the season slow, getting out to an 0-3 start with a 4.58 ERA before going on a four game winning streak and lowering that ERA to 3.05. But the Cubs lost his next 10 starts in which he went 0-8 and his ERA went back up to 4.64 before his current winning streak. However, despite the Cubs struggles behind Wood the pitcher has been strong for over a month, posting a 3.20 ERA since Aug. 1.
The Cubs will likely head into 2013 with Jeff Samardzija and Matt Garza at the top of the rotation, but things are pretty open below that. Wood likely has four more starts this season to earn his spot in that 2013 rotation to open the season.

Chicago Cubs slugger Anthony Rizzo got tangled up in a scary collision with Houston Astros prospect Brett Wallace at first base on Tuesday night, but everything appears to be fine. In a stroke of good luck, the same thing goes for outfielder Brett Jackson, who is working back from a bruised right knee and should be back in the lineup on Friday with Rizzo.
To recap the situation for the Cubs' first baseman, Rizzo collided with Wallace during a ground ball play to second base in the bottom of the third inning. The throw came in high to Wallace, and when he jumped to coral the ball his leg hit Rizzo. The contact led Rizzo to plant his foot awkwardly on the first base bag, and the maneuver sent him flying into the air before he landed on his right shoulder. He left the game after that episode, but told reporters that he escaped with just a bruised shoulder.
Here is exactly what Rizzo had to say about his collision at first base on Tuesday night:

There have been a few bright spots in the 2012 season for the Chicago Cubs, one of which has been the performance of starting pitcher Travis Wood. Wood continued his solid pitching on Wednesday night in Chicago's 5-to-1 victory over the Houston Astros, allowing only one earned run and four hits over 7.2 innings while striking out six.
While Wood put the clamp on Houston's bats, Chicago's hitters plucked out five runs. The first came in the top of the first inning when Wellington Castillo scored Darwin Barney with a single to right field. Alfonso Soriano extended the lead to 2-0 with a homer to left in the top of the fifth, and then pushed the score to 3-to-0 with a single in the seventh inning.
Chicago extended the lead to 4-to-0 in the eighth when Anthony Recker doubled to center, but the Astros narrowed the lead to three when Fernando Martinez singled in the bottom of the inning. Chicago capped off the scoring when Tony Campana scored on a passed ball in the top of the ninth.
The Cubs will take Thursday off before returning to the field on Friday at Wrigley, where they will be hosting the Pittsburgh Pirates for a weekend series.

Two teams playing out the schedule in the National League play Wednesday in Houston when the Astros host the Chicago Cubs in the finale of a three-game series at Minute Maid Park.
The Cubs hope to win the series with Travis Wood (5-11), who has one win since the All-Star break, getting the start against the Astros' Fernando Abad (0-3).
The Cubs have 20 games left to avoid the 100-loss mark and need to go 8-12 to do so. Wood had lost eight in a row until his win last Friday against the Pittsburgh Pirates, and he's 1-1 with a 1.35 ERA against the Astros this season.
Cubs outfielder Brett Jackson is dealing with a bruised right knee but cold be available off the bench Wednesday. Anthony Rizzo isn't expected to play after injuring his shoulder in a collision at first base during Tuesday's game.

The Chicago Cubs held the Houston Astros to only one run on Tuesday night, but unfortunately for them, the Astros did them one better. SIx Astros pitchers combined to shut out the Cubs in what was a 1-0 victory for Houston, though the game was punctuated by a scary collision that left Chicago first baseman Anthony Rizzo on the ground for several minutes.
Rizzo collided with Houston first baseman Brett Wallace after Rizzo hit a grounder to second base in the bottom of the third inning. The throw to Wallace was high, and when he lept, his leg swung around and hit Rizzo, forcing him to plant his foot awkwardly on the first base bag, propelling him into the air. Rizzo then landed hard on his right shoulder a few feet from the bag. He spent a few minutes on the ground being attended to by Chicago's trainers, but after the game told reporters that he escaped with just a bruised shoulder.
Things didn't get much better for Chicago, who mustered six hits on the night but couldn't get a run across the plate. Astros' starter Jordan Lyles picked up the win after tossing five scoreless innings, and Wilton Lopez picked up his fourth save of the season despite allowing two baserunners in the ninth.

Chicago Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo left Tuesday night's game against the Cubs after colliding with Houston Astros first baseman Brett Wallace. Despite being launched into the air and falling hard on his right shoulder, the Chicago Tribune's Paul Sullivan reported after the game that Rizzo is feeling fine.
In the third inning of the game, Rizzo hit a grounder to second base, but Jimmy Paredes' throw was high, forcing Wallace to leap for the ball. In the process, Wallace's right leg swung around and clipped Rizzo. Rizzo, in turn, landed awkwardly on first base, planting a fully extended left leg on the base, which catapulted him into the air. He landed hard on his right shoulder, a few feet from the bag.
Chicago's trainers worked on him for a few minutes, but he left under his own power. Here is video of the play:
There has been no indication yet from the Cubs how much time -- if any -- Rizzo will miss, but that information should be coming soon.

The Chicago Cubs will attempt to continue their winning streak against the Houston Astros tonight and further pad the 11 game cushion separating the North Siders from the deep basement at the bottom of baseball that Houston currently calls home. Five straight wins is within reach for the Cubs.

In a battle between the two worst teams in the MLB, the Chicago Cubs will go for their fifth consecutive win against the Houston Astros. Prior to their four-game winning streak, the Cubs had lost six games in a row.
Chicago will send Justin Germano to the hill, hoping he can finally emerge as a reliable option. The righty has really struggled lately, losing four starts in a row, while posting an 11.09 ERA in that span. The Cubs acquired Germano from the Boston Red Sox in July.
He will take on Jordan Lyles, who has had his share of difficulties as well. Lyles is 3-11 with a 5.55 ERA.
Tuesday's game will begin at 7:05 CT, and can be found on WCIU.

The Chicago Cubs knocked off the Houston Astros Monday, winning 4-1.
Chris Volstad (3-10, 5.99 ERA) picked up the win for the Cubs by allowing one run over five solid innings. Volstad struck out four and has now won three of his last four starts after beginning the season 0-9.
Dave Sappelt, playing in just his eighth Major League game this season, was the offensive hero for the Cubs. Sappelt went 2-5 in the game with 3 RBI and a run scored. He got the scoring started in the top of the second with a run-scoring double. After Houston tied the game in the fourth inning, Sappelt scored on a wild pitch in the sixth to break the tie. An inning later, he hit his second double of the game, driving in Starlin Castro and Welington Castillo.
Sappelt was one of four Cubs with two hits as Joe Mather, Darwin Barney and Castro also finished with two hits. Carlos Marmol pitched a scoreless ninth inning to pick up his 19th save of the season.
The teams will continue their series Tuesday with first pitch scheduled for 8:05 p.m. ET.
