The Chicago Cubs placed starter Matt Garza on the 15-day disabled list in a move retroactive to July 28. On Tuesday, the North Siders made it official by calling up 24-year left-handed pitched Brooks Raley. Raley, a San Antonio native, is 6-foot-3, 185 lbs. and has spent the 2012 season alternating between the Double-A Tennessee Smokies and Triple-A Iowa Cubs. His combined stats for the season in the minors read like this: a 6-10 record with a 3.58 ERA over 22 starts.
Garza is 5-7 this year for Chicago with a 3.91 ERA and 1.18 WHIP. Garza has 96 strikeouts and 32 walks on the season. He is being sidelined by a stress reaction in his right elbow.
Raley is starting on Tuesday for Chicago vs. the San Diego Padres.
