Cubs Scout Kyle Phillips Hopes To Play Again In 2013

28-year-old Cubs scout Kyle Phillips, a former catcher with the Padres, wants to return to playing in 2013.

Former San Diego Padres catcher Kyle Phillips, currently a scout for the Chicago Cubs, told MLB.com's Corey Brock that he'd like to return to playing in 2013 after failing to land a gig this year. Phillips signed a minor league deal with the Toronto Blue Jays during the offseason, but the deal was voided due to an injury.

After having his contract voided by Toronto, Phillips signed on with Chicago to become a scout for the 2012 season. Cubs executives Jed Hoyer and Jason McLeod were presumably familiar with Phillips from the time that those three spent together in the Padres organization before all three departed following the 2011 season.

Now 28, Phillips has spent essentially his entire career in the minor leagues. He received short cups of coffee with the Blue Jays in 2009 and the Padres in 2011, but otherwise he's spent most of the time since 2007 playing in the upper minors. Over 185 Triple-A games, Phillips has a combined line of .283/.343/.396.
