Scott Feldman signs with Chicago Cubs

Kyle Terada-US PRESSWIRE

Scott Feldman joins the Cubs following a few rough seasons in Texas.

Right-handed pitcher Scott Feldman signed a one-year deal with the Chicago Cubs worth $6 million, with an additional $1 million of incentives, according to Paul Sullivan of the Chicago Tribune. Feldman served mostly as a starter for the Texas Rangers in 2012, but also came out of the bullpen.

Feldman has played his entire eight-year career with the Rangers, and holds a 4.81 career ERA. His best season came in 2009, when Feldman went 17-8 in 31 starts with a 4.08 ERA and 113 strikeouts. Since then, however, Feldman has struggled. Last season, the 29-year-old posted a 5.06 ERA and allowed a .279 batting average-against. Still, he brings a low walk-rate and playoff experience with him to Chicago.

Feldman joins a Cubs squad desperately in need of starting pitching. In 2012, its 4.51 team ERA ranked third-worst in the National League. Chicago's starting rotation is now likely to feature mostly righties in 2013, as Felman will be joined by right-handers Matt Garza, Jeff Samardzija, and Scott Baker. Travis Wood is the only lefty slated to be in the starting rotation.
