Bryan LaHair's walk-off single propelled the Cubs to a 5-4 victory over the Astros, giving Chicago a win in the season finale.
Bryan LaHair's two-out, bases-loaded, walk-off single in the ninth inning lifted the Chicago Cubs to a 5-4 victory over the Houston Astros in Chicago's last game of the 2012 season.
Chicago entered the ninth inning tied 4-4 with the Astros. Anthony Recker drew a leadoff walk, before being lifted for pinch-runner Darwin Barney. Chicago failed to advance Barney on a bunt attempt, but Tony Campana reached first on a bunt single the very next batter. After an Adrian Cardenas strikeout, Starlin Castro walked, loading the bases for LaHair, who deposited a single into right field, giving the Cubs a 5-4 win.
Travis Wood started the game for the Cubs, but did not factor into the decision. Wood pitched six innings, giving up one run on three hits. Wood walked five and struck out four.
Carlos Marmol received the win, improving his record to 3-3. Marmol allowed one hit and struck out a batter in the ninth to pick up the victory.
The win moves Chicago's record to 61-101, and ends the season on a somewhat positive note. With the win, the Cubs sent the Astros out of the National League a loser, as Houston will be in the AL West beginning in 2013.
