Doug Davis Fantastic As Cubs Down Yankees

Friday’s series opener between the Cubs and Yankees had all the makings of a playoff series. The stands were packed and their was an energy in the crowd that hasn’t been there all season. In what turned out to be the largest crowd at Wrigley Field this season, the fans of the Cubs (29-40) had a lot to cheer about.

Doug Davis (1-5) picked a great day to have his best outing in a Cubs uniform. Davis went seven and a third allowing one run on just three hits. Carlos Marmol finished the game earning his 14th save of the season.

The Cubs jumped out to an early lead against Freddy Garcia and the Yankees (39-29). RBI hits by Starlin Castro and Aramis Ramirez gave the Cubs a 2-0 lead after the first inning and that turned out to be all they would need.

Garcia (5-6) did rebound from the slow start to go seven innings allowing three runs on just six hits, but Doug Davis was too much as the Yankees could only score one run on just five hits.

The Cubs will go for the series win on Saturday afternoon at Wrigley Field.

Cubs Welcome Yankees To Wrigley For Interleague Series

After taking three of four from their division rivals the Milwaukee Brewers, the Chicago Cubs will welcome an unfamiliar team to Wrigley Field on Friday -- the New York Yankees -- as they continue their interleague match-ups against the AL East.

Starting for the Cubs on Friday will be Doug Davis, still searching for his first win. Davis is 0-5 with a 5.90 ERA and 1.86 WHIP on the season. He's coming off of a start against Philadelphia in which he gave up two runs on five hits over five innings, walked five and struck out six. In his career against the Yankees, Davis is 3-2 with a 6.28 ERA and 1.99 WHIP.

Pitching for the Yankees will be Freddy Garcia. Garcia is 5-5 with a 3.60 ERA and 1.40 WHIP. In his last start, Garcia pitched 6.2 innings, giving up one run on seven hits while striking out six. In his career against the Cubs, Garcia is 4-0 with a 1.47 ERA and 1.00 WHIP. Aramis Ramirez is 6-for-15 against Garcia with a home run, and Alfonso Soriano has a .304 career average against him with one double and one triple.

The weather in Chicago is forecast to be beautiful, with clear skies and a temperature in the low 80's. First pitch will be at 1:20 P.M., CDT, and the game will be televised on CSN, YES, and MLBN.
