Bullpen Fails To Keep Game Within Reach As Cubs Can't Come Back

Something about the number three seems to be too much for the Cubs in the 2011 season. After Wednesday’s loss, they are still the only team in the major leagues to not have had at least one three game win streak during the season.

The Brewers were simply too much for the Cubs and Carlos Zambrano on Wednesday. Zambrano had a poor start, throwing six innings, giving up five runs on nine hits and two walks, while striking out six.

Most of Zambrano’s damage came in the fourth, when Ryan Braun, Corey Hart and Jonathon Lucroy all had big hits. Braun, Hart, and Casey McGehee came up to bat again in the fifth inning and did more damage, putting the Brewers up 5-1. A three run home run by Reed Johnson in the bottom of the fifth inning pulled the Cubs closer, but the taxed bullpen just couldn’t keep the game close late as James Russell, John Grabow, and Rodrigo Lopez all let the Brewers add to their tally.

The last game of the four game set will be on Thursday afternoon, with first pitch coming at 1:20 P.M., CDT.

Cubs Look For First Three Game Win Streak Against Brewers

It's almost halfway through the 2011 baseball season and the Cubs are still the only major league team that has yet to win three games in a row. But, after two late victories against the Brewers, the North Siders are now in a position to accomplish that feat on Wednesday night, weather permitting.

Starting for the Cubs will be Carlos Zambrano. The focus of recent media attention over controversial remarks made about the team, Big Z has actually been a solid starter for the Cubs in the 2011 season. So far he's 5-3 with a 4.40 ERA and 1.31 WHIP. In his last game against the Brewers, Zambrano earned the win while throwing six innings, giving up four runs on seven hits and striking out five. In that game, Yuniesky Betancourt was 2-for-3 against Zambrano, and Prince Fielder was 1-for-2 with a home run and a walk.

Pitching for Milwaukee will be Chris Narveson. Narveson is 3-4 on the year with a 4.32 ERA and 1.37 WHIP. In his last start against the Cubs, he pitching seven shutout innings, giving up just six hits and a single walk while striking out nine. In that game, Geovany Soto was 1-for-2 with a walk.

The weather in Chicago is forecast to be rainy, with a game time temperature in the upper 60's. Weather permitting, first pitch will be at 7:05 P.M., CDT, and the game will be televised on CSN and FSN.
