Cubs Celebrate Two Game Winning Hits In Ninth Inning

On a rainy day at Wrigley, the Cubs put together another ninth inning rally to help boost them over the Cincinnati Reds 3-2.

The game was tight for much of the afternoon, as Casey Coleman, despite getting into trouble a few times, managed to turn in a decent start. He pitched six innings, giving up two runs on four hits and three walks. He also struck out six. Much of the Cubs’ victory can be traced to the work of the bullpen, as Kerry Wood, James Russell, and Marcos Mateo combined to throw three scoreless frames.

Still, until the ninth inning, it seemed that the Cubs were destined for another close loss, as they managed to get only one run off of Bronson Arroyo over his 7.1 innings of work. Francisco Cordero would blow the save in the ninth, however, as Carlos Pena led off the inning with his third home run of the season. Kosuke Fukudome would later hit a game-winning RBI single to center field, one out after the Cubs thought they had won the game on a Jeff Baker hit that ultimately turned into a ground rule double after it bounced on the warning track into the stands. Because of the ground rule, Blake DeWitt, who had been on first, had to retreat back to third base instead of scoring.

The Cubs and Reds will play the series finale on Sunday afternoon at 1:20 P.M., CDT.

Cubs Try To Even Series Against Reds At Wrigley

After a disappointing loss on Friday afternoon, the Cubs will try to even their series against the Reds at Wrigley Field. They'll send Casey Coleman to the mound against the Reds' Bronson Arroyo.

Coleman has been uneven on the year and has had only one truly great start, coming at Colorado on April 16th. On the season he's 1-2 with a 7.36 ERA and 1.96 WHIP. He's started one game against Cincinnati and also made one relief appearance against them. Across those two games, he's got a 6.00 ERA and 1.33 WHIP.

Pitching for the Reds will be Bronson Arroyo. Arroyo has been off to a so-so start on the 2011 season. He's currently 3-3 with a 4.17 ERA and 1.33 WHIP. In his career against the Cubs, Arroyo is 9-7 with a 2.80 ERA and 1.09 WHIP. Marlon Byrd has hit him well, going 5-for-16 with one double and one home run.

The weather in Chicago is expected to be cloudy with a chance of showers and a game time temperature in the high-50s. First pitch is at 12:10 P.M., CDT, and the game will be televised on FOX.
