Casey Coleman held Florida to just four hits in his 5 2/3 innings, while the Cubs offense hit the Marlins pitching staff early and often as Chicago swept the two game road series, 5-1. Coleman also struck out a season high seven batters on the night.
Marlon Byrd hit his third home run of the season in the fourth inning off of Chris Volstad, while four other Cubs collected doubles, and Starlin Castro knocked in a pair of RBIs. The team was only 3-for-13 with runners in scoring position, but they managed to extend their scoring throughout the game, tallying runs in the second, fourth, and ninth innings.
The lone Marlins run came in the eighth inning when Florida’s young slugger Mike Stanton took Kerry Wood deep for Stanton’s ninth home run of the year.
The Cubs will begin interleague play on Friday as they travel to Fenway Park in Boston to take on the Red Sox. First pitch in that game will be at 6:10 P.M., CDT.

Though Casey Coleman has had trouble in his recent starts, perhaps history will be on his side as he takes the mound on Thursday evening. The Florida Marlins have yet to tally a home win against the Cubs since the 2009 season, and Cubs fans hope that Coleman will benefit from this streak.
Coleman, who has been in the rotation since the injuries to Randy Wells and Andrew Cashner, has had an up and down series of starts. He's had two quality outings on the season, one at Colorado and one against Cincinnati, but the rest of his starts have been blowouts, with more than four runs given up at a time. On the season he's 1-3 with a 7.22 ERA and 1.95 WHIP. He's started one game against Florida in his career, in which he pitched six innings and gave up just three earned runs on five hits.
Pitching for Florida will be Chris Volstad. Volstad has also been uneven on the year, and currently sits at 2-2 with a 5.77 ERA and 1.54 WHIP. In his career against the Cubs, he's 0-1 with a 3.41 ERA and 1.17 WHIP across five starts. Starlin Castro and Marlon Byrd are both 2-for-3 against Volstad, and Aramis Ramirez holds a .500 average against him with one home run.
First pitch in Thursday's game is at 6:10 P.M., CDT, and the game will be televised on CSN and FS-F.
