2012 NBA Summer League: Marquis Teague Flashes Skills In Vegas, Still Must Improve

Most draft prognosticators thought that the Chicago Bulls got a steal in the 2012 NBA Draft, when they drafted Marquis Teague with the 29th overall pick. Teague almost certainly would've been a lottery pick in 2013 had he stayed for another year at Kentucky, but his desire to enter the NBA as soon as possible was Chicago's gain.

That said, Teague dropped to 29 for a reason. Despite his potential, he's still an unpolished, inexperienced player with holes in game. All of that was on display in the 2012 Summer League, where SB Nation's Mike Prada saw a player who is still what he was in college.

Much like in college, [Teague] got to where he wanted to go, but struggled to finish plays, whether it was making the right pass or finishing layups.

2012 NBA Summer League: Bulls Blown Out By Milwaukee

In the final day of the always interesting NBA Summer League season, the Chicago Bulls looked like they were ready to leave Las Vegas, as they were blown out in a 113-68 loss to the Milwaukee Bucks.

While the hope is that he will serve as the primary backup for Derrick Rose once the All-Star returns from injury, Marquis Teague didn't impress in Las Vegas. Against the Bucks, Teague scored six points on just 3/11 shooting from the field. In five games in Vegas, he shot less than 30% from the field and committed more turnovers than assists. Jermaine Taylor had his best game in Las Vegas, scoring a team-high 21 points in the loss.

The Bucks were led by Tobias Harris, who scored 18 points in the win. John Henson continued his impressive play, scoring 16 points on 8/9 shooting.

2012 NBA Summer League, Bulls Vs. Warriors: Marquis Teague Struggles In 66-57

Chicago Bulls first round pick Marquis Teague has had an up-and-down 2012 Summer League, but he may have hit his nadir on Friday night vs. the Golden State Warriors. Teague shot 4-18 as the Bulls scored only 57 points, shooting 25% as a team and 1-11 from three-point range. Jimmy Butler, who is expected to take an increased role in Chicago's rotation this summer, shot only 3-14. On the bright side for Chicago, Malcom Thomas— a one-year pro out of San Diego State— put up 12 points and 16 rebounds.

The Warriors were lead by first round pick Harrison Barnes, who put up 20 points and nine assists on 7-16 shooting. Kent Bazemore, a rookie from Old Dominion, swatted away seven shots, though he did shoot only 4-14 from the field.

The Bulls' summer league team will wrap up its time in Vegas on Saturday night vs. the Los Angeles Clippers' summer league team.

NBA Summer League 2012, Bulls Vs. Rockets: Jimmy Butler Thrives Again In 96-88 Loss

In the second game of this year's summer league schedule, the Chicago Bulls lost 96-88 to the Houston Rockets after falling behind early once again. Like in the team's Tuesday night defeat to the Boston Celtics, the Bulls trailed early, climbed back into the game late, and ultimately lost.

But there's good news for Bulls fans, and it comes in the form of Jimmy Butler's play. In a league where success isn't necessarily measured by victories, and rather by the respective performances of certain young players, the Bulls have to be pleased with how the first two games have gone for their 2011 first round pick.

After putting up a game-high 25 points in Chicago's loss on Tuesday, Butler followed that up with 24 points on 6-of-11 shooting against the Rockets on Wednesday. Considering that Butler also grabbed seven rebounds while committing just one turnover, this has to be considered another quality performance from the 6-foot-7 wing.

The team's 2012 first round pick, point guard Marquis Teague, looked much better in his second summer league game, scoring 14 points on 6-of-13 shooting in addition to putting up five assists and five turnovers. In his first game, Teague put up eight points on 4-of-17 shooting with just one assist compared to six turnovers.
