Chicago Bulls point guard Derrick Rose could be the next NBA star to leave his original team in the name of seeking championships, in the opinion of former Orlando Magic coach Stan Van Gundy. Speaking with an Orlando radio show on Monday, Van Gundy explained that Rose could leave if his hometown team never finds him a superstar teammate:
I think Derrick Rose is a great, great representative of our league, and he's a great player. And he's got good players around him, very good players around him, but if (the Bulls) can't get another star there for him, is he eventually going to look around and say, 'Hey, I've got to work this out on my own and I've got to find somehow to get somewhere else so that I will have a chance to play with another star.' The league has changed.
Van Gundy was the coach of the Magic last season when the Dwight Howard saga was at its peak, so he's certainly familiar with the situation described above. Orlando could never acquire a legitimate star player to pair with Howard, and that failure led the him to pursue opportunities to leave the Magic.
While most fans certainly cringe at the idea of Rose leaving his home city to play somewhere else, the NBA is a business and winning is paramount. Considering the recent knee injury and ownership's refusal to spend like other contenders, maybe the point guard leaving isn't such a crazy possibility.

Chicago Bulls point guard Derrick Rose continues to work his way back from a torn ACL suffered in April, and progress appears to be going well. Recently, Rose told Comcast Sports Net that his recovery is currently two or three weeks ahead of schedule.
In the interview, which was done last month, Rose appears to be optimistic. ESPN Chicago has the quotes:
[I'm just] taking my time. I'm definitely two or three weeks ahead of where I'm supposed to be, but that still (doesn't) help the part healing-wise. I've still got to take that time off for my leg to heal. Of course, strength-wise it's getting better every day, but scar tissue still has to heal, getting used to me just laying on my knees. Knee's still numb in some areas. Hopefully I'll get over that, but the doctor says I'll forget about it when the season goes on, so I should be all right.
Rose's surgeon, Brian Cole, has said that the point guard's recovery would take 8-to-12 months, and Bulls owner Jerry Reinsdorf insisted recently that he wouldn't make Rose return unless the guard is 100 percent healthy. Even so, he appears to be recovering well, leaving hope that he can be a significant part of the Bulls for the 2012-13 season.

Up until Tuesday night, Chicago Bulls point guard Derrick Rose had used his Twitter account to root on Team USA in the Olympics and thank his fans for their support. But on Tuesday night, he tweeted something a bit more significant: his return to the basketball court.

The photo is strategically cropped so that Rose's knees are out of frame, but he looks healthy from the knees up as he prepares to shoot a standing shot. Rose is only four months off tearing his ACL against the Philadelphia 76ers, and it's highly unlikely that he has been cleared to do much of anything more than standing still and shooting the ball. But that is progress nonetheless.

There is no specific timetable for Rose's return from the ACL tear he suffered during the Bulls' first game of the 2012 NBA Playoffs. Updates throughout the summer from doctors on Rose's recovery have generally been positive.
Rose averaged 21.8 points and 7.9 assists per game during an injury-plagued 2011-12 regular season that saw him play in just 39 games.

Derrick Rose has been in California rehabbing his knee over the last couple of weeks, and according to his brother, the Bulls point guard is walking around without a brace.
"He's walking without a boot," Reggie [Rose] said. "He's way ahead of schedule.
"It's just keeping him focused, and we're not trying to rush him. Basically, just rehab, rehab, rehab. We haven't put nothing basketball in his face."

Derrick Rose is still the key to anything the Chicago Bulls hope to accomplish in 2012-13 and beyond, and nearly six weeks after undergoing surgery to repair the torn ACL in his left knee his doctor is confident that the star PG is "ahead of schedule" on his rehabilitation. The initial timetable for his return was set at 8-12 months -- which would likely sideline him for the entire upcoming season -- but other more optimistic figures like a 6-9 month recovery have also been floated.
Although the timetable for Rose's recovery has not officially been revised from the 8-12 month quote, the former MVP traveled to Alabama for a visit a therapist in Dr. James Andrews' office earlier in the week and then team physician Dr. Brian Cole told Nick Friedell of ESPNChicago.com Rose is "ahead of schedule" on his rehab:
"Derrick is ahead of schedule," Cole said in a phone conversation Wednesday night.
...Cole also brushed aside speculation that Rose has had a setback in the process.
"Nothing could be further from the truth," Cole said. "He's ahead of schedule. [The rehab] is a way to keep things fresh for Derrick, to help give him some variety."
Positive news on Rose is certainly something that will help the organization focus on adding a contributor to help the team next season in the upcoming 2012 NBA Draft.

According to a report from ESPN Chicago, injured Bulls point guard Derrick Rose was in Alabama on Tuesday to visit with Dr. James Andrews. Rose wanted Andrews to check out his knee and make sure everything looks good.
The rehabilitation is going well and Rose made the trip just to have the renowned surgeon, who's worked on many athletes, take a look, according to a source.

Derrick Rose had successful surgery to repair his torn ACL last month. Now the Chicago Bulls' fortunes next season hang on Rose returning to full strength as quickly as possible.
According to Aggrey Sam of Comcast Sports Net, Rose is making steady progress.
Rose is already walking with a soft brace on his injured knee and only one crutch, according to a source who has witnessed the Bulls superstar's initial stages of.recovery at the Berto Center. Another source, who spoke to Rose recently, told CSNChicago.com that the All-Star point guard's "spirits are up," a consistent description of his mental state since surgery to repair his torn left ACL last month.
As Sam notes, best-case scenarios put the guard back around the All-Star break, though it's certainly not in Chicago's best interest to rush the return of the one-time MVP.

Chicago Bulls shooting guard Richard Hamilton is staying positive when it comes to Derrick Rose's major knee injury; Hamilton wouldn't rule out Rose's availability on opening night of the 2012-13 regular season, though most estimates point to a much later return.
"I don’t want to say he’s out right now," Hamilton said before signing autographs at Macy’s on State Street on Thursday night. "We have a long time. Derrick is still young. He can come back faster than a lot of people expect."
[snip]
"[Rose is] doing good," Hamilton said. "His spirits are good. The season still being active now, that’s hardest for everybody. Turning on the TV and you hear them talk about other teams. I know it’s hard on me. I know it’s killing him."

The Chicago Bulls have no choice but to forge ahead without Derrick Rose, but his recovery and eventual return will loom large over the franchise until he finally steps back onto an NBA floor. But, according to Chicago general manager Gar Forman, the Bulls aren't planning on that being next season, confirming that it's a longshot that Rose will see the court before the fall of 2013.
"We're hopeful at some point he'll be back," Forman said. "I'm not sure we'll make plans as if he will be, but we're optimistic he will be at some point."
(via Chicago Sun-Times)
That said, Dr. Brian Cole told Neil Hayes of the Sun-Times that he won't unilaterally hold Rose out of game action next season. If Rose's rehab progresses quickly, Cole said that he could see the floor if only to boost his confidence and to remind himself that his surgically repaired knee is stable and healthy. According to Cole, the mental aspect of rehab can for some players be as difficult as the physical.
Cole also outlined a rough schedule for how Rose's rehab might progress: running, light basketball activities (i.e. shooting) in up to four months, then cutting and absorbing contact, which could happen by January. At that point, Rose could be cleared to return to practice with the Bulls.

At the Chicago Bulls press conference on Tuesday afternoon, the team physician, Dr. Brian Cole, updated the timeline for PG Derrick Rose's return from ACL surgery. Despite earlier reports of a 6-9 month recovery, it appears the Bulls' star will be out for as much as year:

The Chicago Bulls will be well represented at the 2012 Summer Olympics with Joakim Noah playing for France and Luol Deng starring for Great Britain, but a torn ACL will force star guard Derrick Rose to miss out on the international basketball tournament. Rose starred for Team USA in 2010 at the World Championships, and was thought to be a lock for a spot on the highly competitive roster this summer.
Team USA coach Mike Krzyzewski talked on Monday about what missing Rose means to his team.
"I love Derrick," Krzyzewski said at the Team USA media summit. "He helped us win a world championship in Istanbul (in 2010). He's our starting point guard. I thought he grew a lot from that experience. He's somebody in the future I know will be a point guard for our Olympic team.
"He's a team player. No one pushes the ball down the court any quicker than he does. He can be an outstanding defensive player. Our hearts go out to him. It was a big loss for our team. Hopefully the surgery he had just a day or so ago will be proven to be very successful."

Chicago Bulls star point guard Derrick Rose had his season cut short with an ACL tear suffered in the 2012 NBA Playoffs, but he underwent successful surgery to repair his knee ligament on Saturday and is now on track for an eight-month recovery and an estimated return in late-December, according to a report from Neil Hayes of the Chicago Sun-Times.
Hayes notes that Rose could get back on the court in as little as five months, but the former MVP would not be ready for NBA action until at least 6-9 months from now. The best note that came from the report is that Rose's knee apparently looked good in terms of overall health:
A source said there were no complications or surprises during the surgery, which lasted about an hour. "His knee looked great," the source said. "It's what you'd expect from a 23-year-old physical specimen."

Chicago Bulls point guard Derrick Rose likely tore his ACL because of weakness caused by prior injuries that accrued over the course of season, as one surgeon from the University of Chicago explained in a Q-and-A about the player's injury.
As explained by Dr. Martin Leland, muscle fatigue likely played a major role in Rose going down:
[Rose] went to make that sudden stop, and normally, if he was a little bit stronger, his muscles would have fired and kept his knee still. But his muscles were fatigued and they just gave out, and once they gave out, his knee started going into that position. Basically, he was coming in and stopped with such force that normally his muscles would have kicked in and stabilized his leg, but because his muscles were weak, his knee just kept going, and then ruptured the ACL. So it was really the fact that he wasn’t at 100 percent strength, and the fact that he was fatigued at the end of a game.
During the regular season, Rose missed 27 of Chicago's 66 regular season games with a variety of injuries, but none of them were remotely as serious as this. It looks like those little injuries proved to come back and bite Rose in the end, though.

There has been plenty of hand-wringing about the circumstances surrounding Derrick Rose's ACL injury in the first round of the 2012 NBA Playoffs, but is it right to point the finger at Chicago Bulls head coach Tom Thibodeau? He has pushed Rose and Luol Deng particularly hard over the past two seasons, and as Rose crumpled to the floor in the late portion of the team's win over the Philadelphia 76ers on Saturday, plenty of people wanted to pin the injury on Thibs in this condensed season. In actuality Rose has spread his 40 total games out over four months in the 2011-12 season due to a wide variety of injuries, but Kurt Helin of NBC's ProBasketballTalk blog took the analysis a bit deeper to debunk the idea that Rose was done in by Thibodeau.
Helin posted a quote from Dr. David Altchek from the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York, who stated that ACL tears are not an overuse injuries: "There is no evidence that wear and tear, or that kind of issue, playing too much, really has any correlation with ACL injuries in any sport that we've ever studied." As for the idea that the compressed season did Rose in, Altchek (a consultant for the NBA) added that he thinks players are less likely to tear an ACL when tired because they make less explosive moves.

The Chicago Bulls watched their season flash before their eyes when star point guard Derrick Rose crumpled to the ground after tearing his ACL during a 2012 NBA Playoffs first-round game against the Philadelphia 76ers on Saturday at the United Center, but not all is lost yet. Bulls legendScottie Pippen penned an open letter to the team and its fans on Bulls.com, and in that message he encourages Derrick's teammates to "put every last ounce of effort you have out there to make everyone proud" and boldly claims that the Bulls are "still the best team in the NBA until an opponent proves otherwise."
Even if some of that is just rah-rah stuff meant to inspire a group that is undoubtedly disappointed about the loss of their leader, Pippen goes on to say: "[a]s for Derrick, I truly believe he will come out of this better and stronger," and adds that he will return better prepared for what the game throws at him in the future.
Pippen acknowledges the difficulty of the path that lies ahead of the Bulls in the 2012 NBA Playoffs, and admits that they "lost a very important piece to the puzzle," but he also reminds the team that they have had success without Rose in the lineup and that there is plenty worth playing for in May. If you've been hanging your head ever since Rose hit the floor, Pippen's passionate open letter is worth a quick read.

Despite tearing his ACL just two days earlier, PG Derrick Rose made his way back to the United Center on Monday. The NBA's reigning MVP dropped by the Bulls' practice on Monday, the Chicago Tribune reports, and appeared to be "in good spirits," according to SG Kyle Korver.
Rose's injury likely precludes him from the airplane ride to Philadelphia, but that does not mean the Bulls do not care whether or not he'll be rooting from the sidelines:
"We want him be around," coach Tom Thibodeau said. "As much time as he needs is fine. I don’t think he’ll be able to travel with us. But he’ll be around. And he wants to be around. He’s anxious to get around his teammates. That’s the way Derrick is. He doesn’t look back. He looks ahead. That’s a great way to be."

After Derrick Rose suffered a devastating knee injury in the late stages of the Bulls' win over Philadelphia on Saturday, many questioned why Rose was even on the court at that point. Tom Thibodeau defended that decision after the game, and Bulls general manager Gar Forman offered his full support to Thibodeau on Sunday.
"There is absolutely no issue there," general manager Gar Forman said Sunday. "It's a playoff game. They had cut a lead down (from 20) to 12. Following the unfortunate injury that's knocked Chicago Bulls point guard Derrick Rose out for the remainder of the postseason, forward Kyle Korver turned to Facebook to give some thoughts on the topic with a post titled, "How, Not Why."
Korver began the post by explaining the disbelief and frustration this he and his teammates went through after Rose injured his knee in the final minutes of Chicago's victory over Philadelphia in Game 1:
Why Derrick, again? Derrick is more than an MVP to our team. He's our friend, our brother he inspires us to be the very best we can be, just by who he is and how hard he plays. That he has spent so much time this year hurt, was frustrating. Now that he is out for the rest of the season, well its just plain sad.
But the second paragraph quickly takes things in a different direction, turning back to the games that still need to played:
Now is not the time to ask why or to get bitter. Now is the time to refocus and ask "How are we going to win this Championship?" We have the best Team in the league... We are going to keep going strong. One quarter, one game, one round at a time. Until its over. That's how we're gonna do it.
With Rose, winning the championship would have been difficult. Without him, it's going to be nearly impossible, but at least it's good to see that the team will be going into it with the right attitude.

While Bulls fans are seeing stars after Derrick Rose's season ended on Saturday with a torn ACL, ESPN Chicago's Nick Friedell was kind enough to note that things could get even worse from here for the team.
While Rose's injury is likely to keep him out for the beginning of next season, Friedell notes that he may not be the only key Bulls player ailing early next season:
What gets lost in Rose injury is that if Deng has to have surgery after season, Bulls will start next year without their top 2 players.

With Chicago Bulls up 12 points with just over a minute to play, star point guard Derrick Rose landed awkwardly on his left knee and had to be helped off the court. The injury clouded Chicago's 103-91 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers in Game 1 of the teams' opening round playoff series.
Rose was excellent before the injury, finishing with 23 points, nine rebounds and nine assists. Coach Tom Thibodeau will certainly draw criticism for having Rose in the game with the Bulls ahead by such a comfortable margin so late in the game.
While Chicago dominated Game 1, a serious injury to Rose drastically changes the Bulls' playoff outlook.
