Bulls Vs. Blazers Recap: No Rose, No Victory For Chicago

On Friday night, Chicago Bulls fans once again got a reminder of what life without Derrick Rose is like. Two nights after defeating the Miami Heat at home with the reigning MVP watching from the bench, the Bulls fell 100-89 to a Portland Trail Blazers team whose season has run totally off the rails.

The Bulls upset the Heat on Wednesday night in large part thanks to the stellar play of the replacement duo of John Lucas III and C.J. Watson. But on Friday night, it was those two that dragged the team down, shooting 7-23 from the field and 4-15 from three point range en route to a combined 18 points. The Blazers' backcourt had just about the exact opposite night of that, with Raymond Felton and Wesley Matthews combining for 34 points on 12-22 shooting, and that doesn't even take into account the 12 points that Nolan Smith pitched in from the bench.

The Bulls saw solid contributions from their frontcourt, with Carlos Boozer putting up 22 points and 14 assists and Joakim Noah chipping in with 12 points, nine rebounds and five assists. But even those lines ended up being far off the pace of what the two established in the first half, when the Bulls maintained a lead over Portland despite the Blazers' scorching three point shooting.

That marksmanship from downtown continued in the second half, and eventually overwhelmed Chicago, who tried to match Portland but just didn't have the horses. The Bulls won't have much time to wallow in their sorrows, as they'll take on the Philadelphia 76ers on the road on Saturday night.

Bulls Vs. Blazers Score Update: Bulls With Narrow 53-50 Lead At Half

The Derrick Rose-less Chicago Bulls have basically played the slumping, down-and-out Portland Trailblazers to a draw in the first half of Friday night's game at the United Center, going into the locker room with a 53-50 lead. The Bulls were led in the half by their frontcourt, with Joakim Noah supplying 10 points, five rebounds and four assists and Carlos Boozer topping that with a monster 14 points, eight points and four assists.

The Blazers, in their first game without ex-head coach Nate McMillan, were buoyed by 6-13 three point shooting as a team, which included three made long range buckets from Nick Batum, who lead the team in the half with 15 points. Considering Portland's efficiency from outside, the Bulls must feel a bit lucky to be at halftime, though they probably feel equally as good about their chances in the second half, assuming Portland's three shooting regresses.

Bulls Vs. Trail Blazers Score Update: Chicago Up 32-29 After 1st Quarter

The Chicago Bulls are without point guard Derrick Rose once again, and Richard Hamilton is sitting as well, but that hasn't stopped them from shooting a high percentage early on, and they have a 32-29 lead over the Portland Trail Blazers after one quarter of play.

Joakim Noah has eight points and Luol Deng has seven for the Bulls, who are shooting 66.7% from the field, including 4-9 from beyond the arc.

But the Trail Blazers have shot a solid 54.55 so far, and they've been able to stay close. Nicolas Batum has 11 points for Portland.

Bulls Injury Update: Derrick Rose Ruled Out Friday Night

While Richard Hamilton was ruled out earlier Friday, a decision hadn't been made on Bulls point guard Derrick Rose until just recently.

So Chicago will face the Portland Trail Blazers shorthanded, though as has been the case throughout the season, the Bulls have done a fine job of playing through injuries and not letting them become any sort of excuse. Chicago has won three in a row and seven of 10.

Bulls Injury Report: Derrick Rose A Game-Time Decision vs. Blazers, Rip Ruled Out

The Chicago Bulls (36-9) take on the Portland Trail Blazers (20-23) at the United Center on Friday night, but they will be without shooting guard Richard Hamilton (shoulder). According to K.C. Johnson of the Chicago Tribune, star point guard Derrick Rose (groin) is a game-time decision, and backup PG C.J. Watson is in the same boat. Neither Rose nor Watson participated in team shootaround on Friday morning, so both are unlikely to suit up against a Blazers team that just shipped out two of their top role players for future picks and salary cap flexibility. As for Luol Deng, his injured wrist is still bothering him. Here is what K.C. Johnson had to say, via Twitter:
