Derrick Rose Injury: Bulls Guard Opens Up, Admits It's Turf Toe

Before you can get caught up on the injury situation regarding Chicago Bulls star guard Derrick Rose, you need to understand one thing: not all sprains of the toe are necessarily turf toe, but all turf toe injuries are sprains of the toe. Got it? Good. Earlier in the week, head coach Tom Thibodeau insisted that Rose's injury was merely a sprain and not the chronic condition known as turf toe, saying: "it's a sprain and hopefully he'll be back in a day. It's (different) than a turf toe." The reigning MVP missed a game against the Washington Wizards while nursing his injury earlier in the week, but returned to action on Friday night and helped the Bulls knock off the Boston Celtics, 88-79.

After Friday night's win, Rose spoke to Sam Smith of Bulls.com about the severity and nature of his toe injury. He noted that he has been dealing with pain regularly since his sophomore season and that Adidas -- the shoe company that endorses him -- has sent him an insert to prevent him from bending his toe. Here is what Rose specifically added regarding his turf toe injury:

"I'll probably lose a step, but this is just preparing me for when I get old," Rose joked before Friday's game against the Celtics. I've been getting a lot of treatment on it. Hopefully it should be ready. I was very surprised when I woke up the next morning [after the Timberwolves game] and I couldn't walk. That was something that scared me. I went to get X-rays on it. The x-rays were negative."

"I have turf toe. That was a sprain. That's all it is. Turf toe is just a hyperextended toe. Turf toe is nothing but a sprain."

But as we know, turf toe is a bit different than just a sprain. Turf toe is an injury to the soft tissue around the big toe joint that can limit a player's ability to push off, shift weight and absorb force, and it can be chronic if not given the proper time to heal.

Bulls Vs. Celtics Recap: Bulls Pull Away For 88-79 Victory

A 19 point Chicago Bulls halftime lead was cut to one early in the fourth quarter after the Boston Celtics' Mickael Pietrus nailed a three to bring the score to 67-66 Bulls. But that was as close as the Celtics would get, as Derrick Rose quickly followed up the Pietrus three with a personal 6-2 run from which the Bulls would never look back.

The Bulls were led by Luol Deng, who abused a rusty Paul Pierce, putting up 21 points and 16 rebounds on 8-17 shooting. Derrick Rose had a rough shooting night, making only nine of his 21 shots, but he was still able to finish with 25 points, seven assists and four rebounds. Joakim Noah was also solid on the boards, grabbing 10 rebounds, five of them on the offensive end. As a team, the Bulls outrebounded the Celtics, using their depth to overwhelm the smaller, older Celtics.

The Bulls will return home to host the Toronto Raptors on Saturday night before kicking the week off on the road vs. the Memphis Grizzlies.

Bulls Vs. Celtics Score Update: Celtics Narrow Bulls Lead To 67-59 After Three

The Boston Celtics don't get blown out very often, and with good reason. The veteran team has the capability of choking the life out of an opponent's offense at any moment, with their most recent victim being the Chicago Bulls. After taking a 19 point lead into the half, the Bulls scored only 15 points in the third quarter as the Celtics narrowed the lead to eight.

The Celtics were led offensively by Rajon Rondo, who had six points and five assists in the quarter, but it was the Boston defense that brought them back up to speed. Derrick Rose was especially stifled in the quarter, shooting 2-6 from the field and committing two turnovers to one assist.

Bulls Vs. Celtics Score Update: Bulls Up 52-33 At Half

Derrick Rose Injury Update: Guard Will Play Against Boston Celtics, According To Tom Thibodeau

There had been speculation earlier in the afternoon Friday that Chicago Bulls point guard Derrick Rose was going to play against the Boston Celtics on Friday night, and according to Tom Thibodeau, Rose will indeed be ready to go.

Rose sat out Chicago's last game -- Wednesday against the Washington Wizards -- which the team won regardless, so no harm was done in that respect. He injured a toe on Tuesday in a collision with Minnesota Timberwolves forward Anthony Tolliver; the incident happened in the first quarter, though Ros still logged 42 minutes and scored 31 points.

John Lucas III started in Rose's place against the Wizards.

Derrick Rose Injury: Bulls Guard Says He Will Play Friday Vs. Boston Celtics

Derrick Rose has been battling a toe sprain that Tom Thibodeau has emphatically denied is turf toe, and despite classified by the Chicago Bulls as a game-time decision, Rose insists he will play on Friday night against the Boston Celtics. Rose only had limited participation in team shoot around this morning and has been wearing a protective walking boot while not on the court, but ESPN's Rich Bucher is reporting that Rose informed him that he will play on Friday night.

Tom Thibodeau has only said that Rose will "warm up tonight and see if he can go," but apparently the young star wants to tip the scales and put the pressure on himself to suit up. Point guard counterpart Rajon Rondo has been playing at a breakneck speed in recent games, so if Rose does make it on the court it shouldn't take very long to find out if he is 100 percent. Here is the link for everything you need to find Friday night's game.

A sprained big toe kept Chicago Bulls point guard Derrick Rose from playing in the team's game against Washington on Wednesday, though the Bulls had no trouble beating the Wizards without him. Johnson, Rose reportedly has told people that his toe felt better Thursday.
