VIDEO: Derrick Rose's Acrobatics Bury The Los Angeles Lakers

Chicago looked all but finished after Kobe Bryant put the Lakers up 87-81 with about 54 seconds to go -- after all, the Bulls' offense had looked out of sync throughout the second half. But the Bulls got a three-point play from Luol Deng on their next possession, then they got a defensive stop followed by a pair of free throws from Deng to bring them to within 87-86 with about 20 seconds left.

On the Lakers' ensuing possession, they inbounded the ball to Bryant, who was quickly double-teamed; under duress, Bryant made an ill-advised pass to Pau Gasol that was intercepted by the Bulls. The rest was all Derrick Rose:

The Lakers and Kobe Bryant had one last chance, but Bryant drove the ball down the right side into a host of defenders and his bid to win the game was blocked.

Bulls Vs. Lakers Final Score: Last-Minute Rally Leads Chicago Past Los Angeles, 88-87

The Bulls had struggled offensively throughout the second half, and when Kobe Bryant nailed a shot to put the Lakers up 87-81 with less than a minute left in the game, it looked like Chicago's chances had gone up in smoke.

After a 56-point first half, the Bulls were limited to just 12 points in the third quarter and scored a total of 21 points through the first 22 minutes of the second half, but they were still within striking distance, and the desperate rally that followed that Bryant shot -- capped by an outstanding acrobatic hook shot by Derrick Rose -- proved enough for the Bulls to reclaim the lead and take the game.

Bulls Vs. Lakers Score Update: Chicago Takes 56-49 Lead Into Halftime

It took Derrick Rose a little while to get going at the offensive end this afternoon, but once he did, he was tough for the Los Angeles Lakers to stop. Following a scoreless first quarter, Rose hit all four of his field goal attempts in the second, including a pair of three-pointers and this nifty layup over Kobe Bryant:

Carlos Boozer and Luol Deng also reached double figures in the first half, and the newly acquired Richard Hamilton has four points. C.J. Watson leads the bench with six points on two three-pointers. Chicago was 24-41 from the field, including 5-8 from beyond the arc.

Kobe Bryant leads the Lakers with 14 points on 6-10 shooting and Paul Gasol is also in double figures with 10.

Bulls Vs. Lakers Score Update: Chicago Leads 22-20 After 1 Quarter

Derrick Rose did not score in the first quarter for Chicago, and in fact only attempted one shot, but the Bulls got six points from Joakim Noah and the bench hit four of five field goal attempts. Chicago ran into some foul trouble quickly, as both Richard Hamilton and Noah already have two fouls. Hamilton played just three minutes in the opening quarter and did not attempt a shot.

Pau Gasol leads Los Angeles with eight points, while Kobe Bryant has six. Overall, the Lakers were 9-19 from the field in the first quarter. The Bulls shot 10-19 and hit the quarter's lone three-pointer.

Bulls Vs. Lakers: Time, TV Schedule, Radio Streaming And More

Both the Chicago Bulls and Los Angeles Lakers will be looking to make a statement on Christmas Day when the two face off at the Staples Center. The Lakers, who have had a tumultuous off season, will be trying to prove early that they're still one of the elite teams in the Western Conference, despite the loss of Lamar Odom and the improvement of several other teams in the conference. The Bulls, meanwhile, surely want to get rid of the sour taste left in their mouths after the Miami Heat vanquished them in last year's Eastern Conference Finals. Of course, neither team can right all wrongs in one day, but a nationally televised marquee game is a good place to start.

For the Lakers, Kobe Bryant, who hurt his right wrist in the team's opening preseason game, will play, though the overall status of his injury is still unknown. The Bulls are fully healthy, and will also be integrating new acquisition Richard Hamilton into the line up, and they expect him to give MVP Derrick Rose some much needed scoring help in the backcourt.

Game date/time: Sunday, Dec. 25, 4 p.m. CT

Location: Staples Center, Los Angeles, Calif.

TV coverage: ABC

Radio coverage:

Bulls: ESPN 1000 AM

Lakers: ESPN 710 AM

Odds: Lakers favored by 2.5
