Chicago Blackhawks forward Dan Carcillo has been suspended indefinitely by the NHL pending a hearing with the department of player safety regarding a hit the player made during Monday's game against Edmonton, according to Jesse Rogers of ESPN Chicago. During Monday's 4-3 victory by the Oilers, Carcillo laid a hit upon Edmonton's Tom Gilbert for which he received a five-minute major penalty and a game misconduct.
The play, as described by Rogers:
Carcillo extended his arms in hitting Gilbert into the end boards near the Edmonton net in the second period as both players were racing for the puck. Gilbert tried to brace for the hit, but Carcillo got leverage on him and sent him flying into the boards.
And, additionally, here's video of the hit:
Both players ended up leaving the game with injuries, and the Oilers subsequently scored two goals on the power play that ensured following the hit. Gilbert missed Tuesday's game against Buffalo while recovering, while it's unclear exactly when Carcillo will be allowed to play again. The Blackhawks forward will be serving his sixth suspension of his career and his third suspension of the season.

Home losses are rare these days for the Chicago Blackhawks, but on Monday the Edmonton Oilers invaded the United Center and left Chicago with a 4-3 win. The loss was fourth of the season in regulation at the United Center for the Blackhawks. At 24-11-4 with 52 points, the 'Hawks will remain in top spot in the Western Conference despite the loss.
Ben Eager put Edmonton up 4-2 mid-way through the third period when he beat Chicago goalie Corey Crawford for his third goal of the season off an assist from Jeff Petry. Chicago rookie Jimmy Hayes, making just his second NHL appearance, would tally his first professional goal minutes later to cut the score to 4-3 off assists from Bryan Bickell and Jamal Mayers
The game turned on a second period five-minute major penalty on called on the Blackhawks' Daniel Carcillo, which led to a pair of power play goals for Edmonton.

After a flurry of action in the second period, the Chicago Blackhawks trail the Edmonton Oilers 3-2 with one period remaining at the United Center. Daniel Carcillo's vicious hit on Tom Gilbert behind Edmonton's net led to two power play goals for the Oilers and will certainly be the talk of the day in 'Hawks land tomorrow.
Ryan Smith scored his 15th goal on a power play off the Carcillo major off assists from Shawn Horcoff and Taylor Hall. Hall would give Edmonton a 2-1 lead minutes later when he beat Corey Crawford for his 11th goal of the season on a power play.
Chicago would score its lone goal of the period when Andrew Brunette found the back of the net for his ninth goal of the season off assists from Niklas Hjalmarsson and Patrick Kane. Andy Sutton scored his second goal of the year to give Edmonton 3-2 before the final buzzer sounded in the second.
