Blackhawks Vs. Sharks Final Score: Chicago Holds On For 4-3 Victory Over San Jose

There was unwanted drama for the Chicago Blackhawks in the late stages of Sunday's game against San Jose -- the Sharks scored a goal with five minutes to go to pull within one and went on the power play for the game's final 67 seconds -- but Chicago was able to fend off the charge and hang on for a 4-3 win.

Andrew Shaw gave the Blackhawks a 4-2 lead early in the third period with his fourth tally of the game. Tommy Wingels scored for San Jose to close the gap to 4-3 with 4:57 to play, and while shortly thereafter it looked like Chicago had picked up an insurance goal, it was eventually overturned.

But it ended up a non-issue for the Blackhawks, who survived a 6-on-4 situation in the final minute to win the game.

Blackhawks Vs. Sharks Score Update: Chicago Leads 3-2 Heading Into Final Period

It was a thrilling 20 minutes of hockey in Chicago, as the San Jose Sharks and Chicago Blackhawks combined to score three goals in the second period. After allowing the Sharks to tie the game up, the Blackhawks scored the final goal of the period to take the 3-2 lead.

The Sharks struck twice in the first three minutes to even the score. Joe Pavelski netted his 17th goal of the season, with Marc-Edouard Vlasic and Joe Thornton setting up Pavelski for the opening goal of the game for San Jose. It was Jamie McGinn who evened up the score with his ninth goal of the season on an assist from Torrey Mitchell.

Jonathan Toews gave the Blackhawks the 3-2 lead with his 24th goal of the season. Patrick Kane and Viktor Stalberg combined to setup the key goal for Toews. This was the second point of the game for Stalberg, who also scored a goal in the first period.

Blackhawks Vs. Sharks Score Update: Chicago Scores Twice In Opening Period

On the heels of an emotional overtime loss to the Detroit Red Wings, Blackhawks fans had to wonder if the team would be able to bounce back in a key Western Conference matchup against the San Jose Sharks. Although it took them a little while to get going, Chicago delivered an impressive performance in the opening period, scoring twice to take the 2-0 lead.

Dave Bolland opened the scoring with just two minutes remaining in the period, netting his 13th goal of the season. Jimmy Hayes and Andrew Burnette were credited with the assists on the goal. Just 98 seconds later, Viktor Stalberg found the back of the net to increase the lead. Jonathan Toews and Nick Leddy combined to help setup the key goal.

Blackhawks Vs Sharks Preview: Hawks Look To Rebound From Loss To Detroit

Looking at last nights Hawks score, some fans I'm sure are disappointed that they lost in overtime for the second straight time. For those that missed the game, it actually was one of the better comebacks this season for the Hawks.

After being outplayed in the first period, the Hawks dominated the last two periods. They probably would have won in regulation if it wasn't for the superior play of Wings goalie Jimmy Howard. The Hawks scored with around 0:30 left in regulation to get at least one point for their effort.

Sunday Night the Hawks are back on the ice. Chicago welcomes the San Jose Sharks to the United Center in what should be a great game between two of the best in the Western Conference. Sunday will be the third meeting of the season between the two teams. The Blackhawks are 0-1-1 in the previous two games.

Scheduled to start in goal for the Blackhawks is Corey Crawford. Crawford played excellent against the Red Wings on Saturday, but earned a tough loss. The Hawks netminder is 16-10-3 with a GAA of 2.83.

In goal for the Sharks will be former Blackhawk Antti Niemi. Niemi is having a fine season in net for the Sharks with a record of 19-7-5 and a GAA of 2.26. For those that may not remember, Niemi was the Blackhawks goalie for the 2009-2010 Stanley Cup Championship team.

The Hawks and Sharks are scheduled to start at 6:00 CST. The game will be televised on WGN.
