Blackhawks Vs. Penguins Final Score: Comeback Falls Short, Chicago Loses 3-2

The Chicago Blackhawks did come up with a pretty impressive comeback in the third period of Tuesday night's game, but the Pittsburgh Penguins walked away with a 3-2 victory in a battle of NHL elites. The Blackhawks trailed 3-0 going into the final period but made a run to make things interesting late before ultimately being unable to complete the comeback.

Just 49 seconds in the third period, Jonathan Toews did what the Blackhawks couldn't do in the first two periods by getting the puck past Penguins goalie Marc Andre Fleury. And just a few minutes later, Victor Stalberg did the same for Chicago, cutting Pittsburgh's lead to just 3-2 with a good deal of time remaining. The Blackhawks weren't able to get that final goal on the scoreboard to push things into overtime, though, ending their five-game winning streak.

Chicago's first loss since Dec. 5 drops it to 21-9-4 on the year, still good for first place in the Central Division. Pittsburgh is up to 19-11-4 this season, pushing them into a tie for second place in the Atlantic Division with the New York Rangers.

Blackhawks Vs. Penguins Score Update: Pittsburgh Extends Lead To 3-0 After Two Periods

Tuesday night was supposed to feature a competitive battle between two of the league's elite teams in the Chicago Blackhawks and Pittsburgh Penguins, but so far it's been a fairly lopsided affair as the Penguins lead 3-0 after two periods. Chicago has been one of the hottest teams in the league of late, winning five in a row and seven of its last eight, but the Blackhawks have struggled on the road against Pittsburgh.

Pittsburgh got its second goal of the game just a couple minutes into the second period as James Neal scored his 19th of the season, and Tyler Kennedy followed it up later in the period with his fourth goal of the year. Evgeni Malkin hasn't scored a goal but continues to rack up points, as he's now assisted all three goals on the night.

The Blackhawks are going into the third period on their way to a possible shutout, a rare event for one of the league's better offensive clubs. They were last shutout on Nov. 23 against San Jose, one of just three times that they've been unable to score a goal in a game. With the fifth-ranked scoring offense in the NHL, Chicago's probably hoping to catch fire in the third period and chip away at Pittsburgh's lead.

Blackhawks Vs. Penguins Score Update: Pittsburgh Leads 1-0 After 1st Period

The Chicago Blackhawks are in Pittsburgh Tuesday night looking for their sixth consecutive win of the season, but the Penguins are out to an early 1-0 lead thanks to a power play goal by Chris Kunitz near the midway point of the first period. It's Kunitz's 12th tally of the season.

Chicago defenseman John Scott and Pittsburgh defenseman Deryk Engelland were involved in a major scuffle that resulted in a two-minute instigator penalty, five minutes for fighting and a 10-minute misconduct for Scott. Scott took issue with Engelland's hit on Marcus Kruger; Engelland left his feet to deliver the hit, though no call was made by the officials.

Unofficially, Pittsburgh out-shot Chicago 13-10 in the opening period. The Penguins had three power play opportunities.

Brent Seabrook Injury Update: Chicago Blackhawks Defenseman Expected To Play

The Chicago Blackhawks, playing the vaunted Pittsburgh Penguins Tuesday night, should have the assistance of one their first-line defenseman, Brent Seabrook. After sustaining a harsh blow from Calgary Flames LW Rene Bourque from behind, it appeared Seabrook had been knocked cold and was promptly removed from the game.

However, according to Seabrook, he kept conscious through the hit:

"I remember the whole thing. I got hit and heard [Bourque] say right away that he was sorry. I could hear [Duncan Keith] and [Jonathan Toews] behind me.

"I couldn't get up, so I put my head down and everybody seemed to think that I was knocked out. I think I held my weight pretty good. It was good."

The Blackhawks are expected to start Seabrook Tuesday night after he reported "feeling good" in the morning skate.
