Blackhawks Vs. Blue Jackets Score Update: Chicago Up 5-1 Through 2 Periods

Never mind that bit in the previous update about the struggling power play; Chicago broke through in the second period with not one but two power play goals and the floodgates opened on Columbus. Andrew Brunette scored less than 90 seconds into the period, converting the power play that the Blackhawks carried over from the first period. Steve Montador scored the other power play goal near the midpoint of the period.

Patrick Kane scored a backbreaking goal on a breakaway with about a minute left in the second to finish off the scoring. The Blackhawks already have 30 shots on net.

Corey Crawford has stopped 18 of 19 Columbus shots.

Blackhawks Vs. Blue Jackets Score Update: Chicago Ahead 2-1 After 1st Period

There is a hat trick watch already in progress in Columbus thanks to Jonathan Toews, who scored both of Chicago's goals in the opening period. He got the scoring started about seven minutes into the game, then added his second goal of the night with a little under three minutes left in the first. They're Toews' sixth and seventh goals of the season.

In between was a power play goal by Columbus' Grant Clitsome. Other than that one special teams opportunity, though, the Blackhawks have controlled the play on the ice and hold a 16-5 edge in shots on goal.

Chicago's power play, which came into the game with an NHL-worst 8.8% success rate, continues to struggle, however. They were 0-1 with the man advantage in the first period, and they'll start the second period with 1:43 of power play time after a late roughing call on Jared Boll.

Dan Carcillo took a puck to the mouth during the period; his status is uncertain at this point.
