BLACKHAWKS ANALYSIS: With Patrick Kane And Marian Hossa Out, Jeremy Morin's Goal Is A Good Sign

The Blackhawks have had more than their share of injuries so far this season. Marian Hossa, Brian Campbell, Dave Bolland, Fernando Pisani, Patrick Sharp and now Patrick Kane have all missed games, and with Kane and Hossa both out now for indefinite periods, other players have to pick it up.

19-year-old Jeremy Morin, who has ridden the Rockford to Chicago shuttle so often this year he probably knows every leaf on I-90 between the two cities, scored his first NHL goal in the 5-3 win over the Dallas Stars. You could see in the youthful grin on Morin’s face, how happy he was to get that first one in and not have to wonder when it was coming. Expect Morin to get more ice time and maybe, just maybe, not see Rockford again.

Corey Crawford made 28 saves and won his seventh straight start. In pregame interviews Marty Turco said all the right things about going with Crawford because he’s playing well, but you could tell Turco’s not happy with the current situation — he didn’t uproot his family from Dallas to sit on the bench, and he didn’t even get to play against his former team.

Nevertheless, coach Joel Quenneville has to go with the guy who can win games for him. Right now, that’s Crawford.

Blackhawks' Jeremy Morin Scores First NHL Goal In 5-3 Win Over Stars

Chicago, IL (Sports Network) - Bryan Bickell and Jonathan Toews each had a goal and an assist as the Chicago Blackhawks took a 5-3 win over the Dallas Stars at United Center.

Patrick Sharp, Jeremy Morin and Troy Brouwer each had a goal for the Blackhawks, who have won five of six. Corey Crawford stopped 28 shots in the win.

James Neal and Loui Eriksson each had a goal and an assist for the Stars, who have dropped two straight on the heels of a six-game winning streak. Brandon Segal lit the lamp and Andrew Raycroft stopped 20-of-24 shots in the loss.

"I think the second period hurt us," Stars forward Adam Burish said. "We made it competitive at the end and I think we can feel good about that."

Chicago opened up the scoring 3:18 in on a delayed penalty call when Bickell ripped the puck into the back of the net on a wrister from the high slot.

Just over 10 minutes later, the Blackhawks made it a 2-0 game as Toews' shot from the outside right circle went past Raycroft as two players crashed the net.

Just 1:36 into the second, Chicago took a 3-0 lead on a 3-on-2 break as Dave Bolland sent the puck from the right circle to the slot where Morin wristed it home for the first goal of his NHL career.

Dallas got one back just 20 seconds later when Neal snuck a backhand past Crawford, but Chicago answered just 25 seconds later on Brouwer's sixth goal of the season.

However, the Stars scored with 3:54 left in the second on Segal's fourth goal of the season and Eriksson made it a 4-3 game just 1:05 later when he stuffed the puck in from the low right side for his 11th goal of the season.

Dallas had an early power play in the third, but allowed two Chicago power plays in the latter stages of the game and, with Chicago on the advantage and Raycroft pulled, Sharp scored into the empty net just moments before time expired.

"This has been a trend around here for at least a year or two. We get up by three or four and we lose our concentration," Blackhawks head coach Joel Quenneville said. "We were better in the third period and we had to be."

Game Notes

Before the game, Chicago placed winger Marian Hossa on injured reserve with a lower body injury. He has been out since colliding with teammate Nick Boynton during a November 29 practice...Dallas recalled goaltender Richard Bachman as regular goaltender Kari Lehtonen experienced lower-body stiffness prior to the game. Also, the team activated defenseman Mark Fistric from injured reserve and assigned him to Texas for conditioning. Fistric has missed the last seven games with a lower-body injury...Chicago goaltender Marty Turco, who left Dallas in the past offseason as the franchise's all-time leader in wins and shutouts, did not make an appearance in the game.

Chicago Blackhawks Vs. Dallas Stars: Marian Hossa To Injured Reserve

The move of Marian Hossa to injured reserve, retroactive to Nov. 29, is largely procedural -- he isn't due back for at least another week or two and the Blackhawks needed some roster space. Recalled for tonight's game against the Dallas Stars are Jeremy Morin and Rob Klinkhammer, profiled in this commentary by SB Nation Chicago's David Miller.

The Hawks seem injury-bit this year. Patrick Kane is out for an indefinite length of time and Fernando Pisani also won't be back for a few more games.

Tonight's game also features the return of popular former Blackhawk Adam Burish, one of many of the Stanley Cup champions dealt off for salary cap reasons. His Stars have won seven of their last ten, as have the Blackhawks, so this will be a good test for Corey Crawford, who is expected to start in goal tonight.

Tonight's game begins at 7:30 p.m. CST and will be televised on CSN Chicago Plus. In Chicago this channel can be seen on your CLTV channel, on Comcast systems in Chicago the HD version is on channel 285. For other channels, see your cable listings.
