Bears Vs. Packers: Chicago Knows Clay Matthews Can Be Destructive

Right tackle Gabe Carimi faces a big test in the Chicago Bears' Thursday night game against the Green Bay Packers. Carimi will primarily line up against Clay Matthews, the explosive linebacker who drives Green Bay's pass rush. Offensive coordinator Mike Tice knows the challenge ahead of Carimi. As he told the Chicago Tribune:

"(Matthews) likes to pass, so I'm going to get him to run sometimes, tire him out a little bit,'' Carimi said with sarcasm. "He's an explosive guy. He has a great second move. He's either going to run straight up the field, try to beat you with speed, then jab rush you and give you a bull rush. Or he's going to pretend to come inside like he's going to hard hit you with a spin move.''

Carimi faces Julius Peppers every day in practice, giving him some experience with a fearsome pass rusher. That may help him neutralize Matthews as well as the Bears did the last time they faced Green Bay. Then-right tackle Frank Omiyale held Matthews without a sack. That's better than things usually go: In the six games Jay Cutler has faced the Packers he has been sacked 19 times and thrown 11 interceptions.
