2012 NFL Free Agency: Bears May Pursue DE Mario Williams

The Chicago Bears are expected to look for a new defensive end to make up for the loss of veteran DE Israel Idonije, and Sean Jensen of the Chicago Sun-Times thinks the Bears may be able to nab one of the league's top pass rushers, DE Mario Williams. According to Jensen, the Houston Texans will allow Williams to test free agency after it became apparent the franchise tag for Williams would produce a salary near $22M.

The Bears signed top free agent DE Julius Peppers in the 2010 offseason, and Jensen likens that wave-making acquisition to the present possibility of acquiring Peppers.

Since joining the Bears in 2010, Peppers has accrued 19 sacks, 13 pass deflections, 2 interceptions and countless offsides calls on opposing tackles attempting to get a jump on him. Adding Williams, who has average 0.6 sacks per game in his career, could potentially make the Bears pass rush the most feared in the NFL.
